Zandesh, Gilly is no where near the best wicketkeeper ever. He has nowhere near as many catches and stumpings are Healy and Marsh. Statistically Healy is the best/most successful wicketkeeper in history. Healy also made Test and One Day centuries. I would regard Healy as the best keeper ever as he had to keep to Warne when warn was at his best turning the ball an incredible amount. As far as wicketkeeping goes, Gilly is no slouch but is a long long way from being considered one of the greatest wicketkeepers to play the game. He can be considered one of the greatest batsmen-keepers to ever play though. Gilchrist's batting skills are far superior to his keeping skills and thats essentially why he took over from Healy because his batting was far superior to Healy's.
Gilchrist should be considered a batsman-wicketkeeper and not a wicketkeeper-batsman as he is basically selected for his batting. Over the last number of years Australia has had far superior keepers to Gilchrist such as Darren Berry (obviously now retired) and many would argue that Wade Seccombe from QLD is a better keeper than Gilly but he is much like Healy in relation to his batting.
The day of the specialist keeper is gone (unfortunately) as shown by the fact that Haddin is next in line for keeping honours in the Aussie team when Seccombe is a much better keeper but again Haddin is a very good batsman.
The English seem to be getting very carried away with themselves and their recent series win. They beat South Africa......wow. At the moment South Africa are probably only appropriate competition for Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. Australia has now flogged everyone. I think the Ashes will be a great series, the most competitive in a long time but for anyone to consider England anything but an underdog they would need their head read.
And Bottrop I don't really give 2 shits about the appearance of the Australian team, they are still the world champions in both forms of the game. Also I fail to see how Langer is a Strauss clone, Langer has been around a lot longer than Strauss. Clarke may be untested on English pitches but Strauss is also untested against the Aussies as is most the English team and those who have played the aussies still carry many mental scars. Looking forward to the series, will be great viewing.
