I think its a great concept. I would pay good money to see a team of the world's best players battle it out against the worlds best team. Would be a great challenge for the aussie batsmen (assuming aus stil at no 1 at the time) to have to face up to an opening attack of Shaun Pollock and Shoaib Akhtar and then having to contend with the worlds best spinner at the moment Muttiah Muralitharan. Could be a great measure of how great the Aussie team is.

^^You think Akhtar deserves to be in the world team?
I'm not so sure...

Anyone care to draft their own fantasy World XI's?

EDIT: sorry, i didnt read the link and realise it went on player rankings :)

Akhtar is an absolute monster. Worlds fastest bowler atm. And the best exponent of the inswinging yorker I've ever seen.

Also fuck Mark Richardson off, I dont care if he's an opener. Laxman needs to be in that team somewhere, even if one of the middle order batsmen is forced to open.

i agree Richardson never cranked it good when he played us.

i think there is a place for an english opener...vaughan or trecothick maybe?

edit: but whateva yeah. we are gunna beat whoever they put in that team =D

im all for kasprowicz (always been a fan)...but the media is suddenly claiming him and saying he's battled hard...i never remembered them being too keen in the past?

Agree Mark Richardson not deserving of playing in world team. Only reason for that the rest of the players are great stroke players ie Lara, Tendulkar, Dravid etc, and he is not.

If you want an opener play Vaughan (sp?), he played sensationally against Australia last summer.

The rest of the team is about right, maybe Boucher could be the keeper instead of the the Sri Lankan one. I would definetly pay good money to watch these cricketers.

:)

OK, first stab at a fantasy World Test XI just for kicks (the hell with the PWC rankings, Akhtar has been playing against feeble opposition lately, and I don't really rate Ntini either. Laxman has been putting Australia to the sword, but how do you put him in aboove the others?):

1. M. Vaughan (ENG)
2. H. Gibbs (SA)
3. R. Dravid (IND)
4. B. Lara (WI)
5. S. Tendulkar (IND)
6. J. Kallis (SA)
8. (w) L. Vincent (NZ)
8. S. Pollock (SA)
9. A. Kumble (IND)
10. M. Muralithuran (SL)
11. C. Vaas (SL)

It's tempting to make Dravid keep wickets and include Laxman, but I have a soft sport for Lou Vincent and there are three Indians in the team already.

Pollock and Vaas to open the bowling, Kallis as first change, backed up by Muralithuran and Kumble with totally different styles of spin.

I'd be a bit worried abut the tail, but if you need them to hold up with a top order like that, then you deserve to lose.

No Pakistanis, hmm. I'd love to include Inzamam Ul-Haq (instead of Vincent maybe, Dravid is a second-rate keeper but meh)... and on second thoughts, maybe I would go with Shoaib instead of Vaas after all. He's an idiot, and overrated, but he has star power (and this is after all about pulling a crowd) and is undeniably exciting to watch.

^^ Is it worth putting Kumble in over Harbhajan Singh just so you have the variation of style? Or could you have the best two off-spinners in the world in the same team?

Kumble did come into this tour as Indias second tier spinner behind Harbhajan.

^^ Kumble may be able to bowl well (altho after his shoulder injury, he didnt look to convincing tonight) but he is SHIT in the field...the worst in the Indian side.....and i think that has to come into play.....

Also, Dravid as keeper, i don't think so.....he's given away about 20 runs per match due to poor skills....i think Laxman should be ahead of him in the team.....

Awesome, simply awesome! :D :D :)

Best innings of one day cricket i've ever had the priviledge of watching.

Symonds looked like he was playing in an Under 13's match on a postage stamp size ground.

Hayden, Martyn, Clarke and Katich at the end... what a bunch of full sik cunts!

SMASHED!!!!!!! completely obliterated. Thanks for coming India, we'll see you in a few months ;)

Good to see Martyn getting some runs, also Symonds was in impeccable form. In fact the only thing I can say that didn't go right was that Hayden dropped a simple catch in the slips, other than that it was pretty much a perfect game.

CB :)

Haha it was fucking great wasnt it.....when they reached 300 with 5 overs to go, i thought "oh shit here we go!"......117 off the last 10 overs....HOLY FUCK! :D

=D=D=D

Well Warnies Back, apparently 2 or 3 thousand people have rocked up to see him play today in a 2nd eleven game.

He is a great leg spinner much better than that hack from NSW, and will be needed especially in Sri Lanka and India later on in the year.

Lets just hope he can keep his hands to himself, stay off the mobile phone , stop taking pills and give up that awful wine of his. Shit his life sounds exactly like mine except for 000000's missing of my bank statement.

=D

Martyn =D Love that guy ;) But what about Simmo!!! That was one of the best One-Day knocks I've ever seen. I remember with about 15(?) overs to go, I think Taylor said they were gunna get 359...i was like, fuck off!! but then they busted out as hard as Ive ever seen!!
My World XI:

1. H. Gibbs (RSA)
2. M. Vaughan (ENG)
3. V.V.S Laxman (IND)
4. S. Tendulkar (IND)
5. B. Lara (WI)
6. J. Kallis (RSA)
7. M. Boucher (RSA)
8. S. Pollock (RSA)
9. M. Muralitharan (SL)
10. S. Akhtar (PAK)
11. S. Bond (NZ)
(12.) J. Davison (Can)

Pollock and Bond opening the bowling. Akhtar used like Brett Lee used to be. Only need for one spinner.

The order of the batsmen probably gains the maximum team synergy they can get. Because being a 'unit' will be their problem.

I dunno about Boucher though, I'd be tossing up between him, McCullum (NZ) and Sangakarra (SL).

Obviously the stats disagree with me, and he's had some unbelievable knocks, but I don't really rate Dravid among the worlds best batsmen.

Not a bad team. But thats a pretty long tail with Pollock batting at 8. I assume you had it batting order. Pollock can bat a bit but i dont know that he is good enough to bat at 8 in a World XI.

Nah Pollock can bat anywhere from 7 through 9. He is a genuine slogger with timing who can turn a game with no questions asked. As far as bowling goes, Bond can do the job, however I personally wouldn't pick him. However I am currently drunk and can't think exactly how I would replace him with. Will have a sober think about it tomorrow :)

CB :)

this thread needs to be bumped in memory of the great summer we just had.

this time of year is sad though, you dont realise how much of a constant fixture the cricket is in your life until times like this :(

now i gotta get me some foxtel...

or ill be watching online @ baggygreen =D

Well Done Ricky Ponting winning the Allan Border medal, he was a deserving winner.

Question though why did they they have Jurassic Park music going during the highlights? Was expecting a T-Rex to come charging through the screen

I thought it funny that Warnie was there even though he's missed a whole year..... cant wait to see him in action again. Hoping those flippers are back too.

Apparently the flipper was sighted in the Vic seconds game... whether that means it's going to make a regular comeback or not is obviously still an open question.

The real question is - is Glenn McGrath coming back, and if not, who will be the next one? Bracken?
