MARTYN
Martyn has been averaging 45.5 even without a century recently. In terms of a Test No.4, he is the ONLY man for the current job. He probably worked harder than ANY man for his spot (except for Lehmann). He was unfairly blamed for the South Africa debarcle ('94 or '96???) when he spooned to cover on 6 from 50 in a pressure situation. This led to his axing and he battled to return and has performed outstandingly in the Test Arena since then. He is the PERFECT no.4 behind Australia's top 3 and more suited to the spot than Mark Waugh was. He is technically superior to any of Australia's top order batsmen and the most solid batsmen left in the side after Steve's departure. Martyn has done alot to deserve his position...while not the most prolific of Australian batsmen, he has made some pressure knocks and saved Australia his fair share of times. He was hated by the public 5 years ago, but has turned it around and developed into a mature player.
One-Day speculation is different I guess. Being dropped from the one-day side usually represents a temporary change rather than an 'axing'. I've never agreed with Martyn batting no.4 in the one-day side...unless you are in trouble at 2/0. The 'revolving-door' of the one-day team is not a bad thing and could have been used in the last tri-series with South Africa and
New Zealand, when Fleming 'figured out' Martyn (5 men bacward of point). This was the toughest home series we'd had in a long long time and dropping an 'out-of-form' Martyn would have been warranted. Since then though, his one-day form has been good and it is only recently he has come under undue criticism by the media. A time when we have dominated the one-day arena and other players have been more than making up for his lack of contribution.
He hasn't been scoring as many runs as he could (should), but as I think Ponting said "He's not 'out of form' at all. He is timing the ball as well as ever. He's just been getting out before making a big score". Centuries are not the most important thing in the one-day game, we've got enough game breakers in the team, that a solid, technical batsmen with a strike rate of 80 is needed (who adds 30's each innings...11*30=330). I see him as a similar playing to Bevan, he is a run accumulator and can often frustrate the viewer when he comes in at no.4 and slows the charge that the top 3 has launched. But both these batsmen hold the brilliant ability to find the boundary when needed and both have good cricket brains and are adept at 'pacing' a run-chase. Sometimes Martyn will be labelled as a slow batsmen, but he can turn it on when needed. His technique shown in hitting over cover is reminicent of Jaques Kallis (although he isn't the total batsmen that Kallis is). While not possessing brute force, he is a superb timer of the ball and is not 'out-of-form' at all...he just hasn't made a big score lately...meaning he's due this finals series
Sorry...been a Martyn fan for almost 10 years
