Hey cricket ppls you gotta have a look at another thread in this forum tittled "Thank God they finally burried David Hookes" !!!!
There is a bit of Hookesy bashing going on in there, some who know fuck all about cricket have labelled him "2nd rate" and "2nd grade" cricketer. Also they having a fair dig at Steve Waugh for winning Aussie of Year. This i can understand but some retard said something along lines of blah blah blah....when "Mark Waugh won Aussie of the Year".

I think it could be up to some of us to explain to these ill informed drop kicks that Hookesy is actually a significant loss to Australia.

I think we just have to agree to disagree with them.... they aren't really having a go at hooksey, mainly the media.

Repeating myself from the other thread, hopefully the only good that can come of this is tightening/improving laws/training/rules/concequences etc etc etc for Crowd Controllers / Bouncers.

Anyone who plays for australia, captains a one dayer for australia, hits 5 consectutive 4's, and coaches a state side back to the top CANNOT be considered 2nd rate....he may not have been Bradman with the bat, but then again, who was/is?

Well done Martyn, 42 off 40 balls.....not a spectacular score, but not one of someone who should be dropped....nice one :)

What do people think of Ian Harvey in the 1day team. I reckon he is one of the biggest under achievers to play cricket for Australia. That guy has so much ability but never seems to do anything with it. He does not even have a 1 day 50 to his name, yet bats above Hogg, Bichel etc who have 1 or 2 50's at least.

Granted he is a good one day bowler but for a specialist late innings bowler this series he is going at 5 or 6 an over for not many wickets.

Harvey needs a defining moment in his cricket career like Symonds in the world cup or else he will continue to under achieve, a great waste for someone of his talent.

< gets off soap box now>
:|

^^ hmm i never noticed.....i think maybe he is hype? Like, the selectors are choosing him cause he is tried + true, altho not exactly proven. Which is funny, after Martyn was being scorched this week, and he is a proven batsmen (and at times bowler). Perhaps the selectors should delve into the state ranks a bit more...there has to be a more consistent all-rounder don't you think?

Good point...

If Shane Watson was able to bowl yet he'd be in the side 100%.... even more so with Punter captain. Watched a bit of Cleary from SA last season. He's come on this season, Aust A, PM's X1 etc... Good boundary hitting left handed batsman.... goodish meduim/fast. However, none of these can bowl anywhere near as good in 1days as Harvey.

Maybe we should bring Brendan Julian out of retirement............=D ..... for picking on on O/S tours that is %)

It is an interesting prediciment the selectors have got themselves into after winning the world cup. They (the selectors) have publical decidided that they will back the players who played in the world cup, no matter what their form is, ie Martyn etc. The same could be said about Harvey and Hogg.

The funny thing is that Hogg and probably Harvey would struggle to get a game for their state teams on form at the moment yet can get a game for Australia.

In terms of an allrounder, especially one's that bowls medium pace etc the stand out one was / not sure still might be depending on his back is Shane Watson. I think soon the selectors will realise that there is hardly any substance to Harvey, and his place in the team is based around bluff.

Fair point re: Harvey.... maybe he has some royal blood or something ? Maybe he's called the freak because people just cant understand how he stays in the side. ?!

:D Nice one...

Well it seems Bevo is out with a busted rib (dammit), Katitch is in (nice one, hope he gets a good score), and Mike Hussey too....

interesting.....yet Harvey still holding his place....pressure has lifted from Martyn tho :)

If we are bring back Simon O'Donnell then we may as well bring back his partner in the CCP (Central Commentary Position), the great man Richie!! Sure Richie not a quick bowler, but i'm sure he is still capable of sending down a few tweakers and holding up an end with the bat!!

I doubt greatly that the pressure is off Martyn. A rapid fire 40 odd against one of the weakest cricket teams in international cricket does not remove you from a form slump. When Martyn makes a significant score against the Indians then it may be said that the pressure is somewhat relieved. 1 significant score may temporarily take the pressure off but he will still have to string a few innings together before he could be considered to be 'in form'.

What do people think the chances of lehman returning to the test and 1 day team when he is fit again? A lot of the guys I play cricket with seem to think he will struggle to get into the team because of his age and the number of young players pushing for selection. I personally think he will at the very least return to the 1 day team and pretty sure he will make it back to test cricket. This is mainly due to the fact that Australia tours India soon and Boof is one of the best players of spin in Australia. Before he did his achilies he was in some pretty cracking form and as long as he is fit I see no reason to select him apart from wanting to blood a younger player. However I think taking a young inexperienced player to tour India is just setting them up for a big dissapointment, its one of the toughest places to tour even for the greatest players. If selectors were to go with a young player and he was not to perform would he be considered a failure and not up to the standard? If this is the case then whats the point?
Anyway Boof gets my vote.

^^ I agree with what you say re: pressure on Martyn....my saying that the pressure was off him was in reference to the media coverage i had seen in regards to his 42 (40) innings....all of the news + sports reports i saw were saying "return to form", "nice innings", "answered critics", etc.....i think the media plays a huge part in bringing attention to the form of a player.

I agree that he isn't yet to be considered "back in form" as he does need to string a few innings together and post at least a half century. The eyes are still on him (especially after his finger incident today), but i think the pressure has been lifted to a good degree....

MARTYN

Martyn has been averaging 45.5 even without a century recently. In terms of a Test No.4, he is the ONLY man for the current job. He probably worked harder than ANY man for his spot (except for Lehmann). He was unfairly blamed for the South Africa debarcle ('94 or '96???) when he spooned to cover on 6 from 50 in a pressure situation. This led to his axing and he battled to return and has performed outstandingly in the Test Arena since then. He is the PERFECT no.4 behind Australia's top 3 and more suited to the spot than Mark Waugh was. He is technically superior to any of Australia's top order batsmen and the most solid batsmen left in the side after Steve's departure. Martyn has done alot to deserve his position...while not the most prolific of Australian batsmen, he has made some pressure knocks and saved Australia his fair share of times. He was hated by the public 5 years ago, but has turned it around and developed into a mature player.

One-Day speculation is different I guess. Being dropped from the one-day side usually represents a temporary change rather than an 'axing'. I've never agreed with Martyn batting no.4 in the one-day side...unless you are in trouble at 2/0. The 'revolving-door' of the one-day team is not a bad thing and could have been used in the last tri-series with South Africa and
New Zealand, when Fleming 'figured out' Martyn (5 men bacward of point). This was the toughest home series we'd had in a long long time and dropping an 'out-of-form' Martyn would have been warranted. Since then though, his one-day form has been good and it is only recently he has come under undue criticism by the media. A time when we have dominated the one-day arena and other players have been more than making up for his lack of contribution.

He hasn't been scoring as many runs as he could (should), but as I think Ponting said "He's not 'out of form' at all. He is timing the ball as well as ever. He's just been getting out before making a big score". Centuries are not the most important thing in the one-day game, we've got enough game breakers in the team, that a solid, technical batsmen with a strike rate of 80 is needed (who adds 30's each innings...11*30=330). I see him as a similar playing to Bevan, he is a run accumulator and can often frustrate the viewer when he comes in at no.4 and slows the charge that the top 3 has launched. But both these batsmen hold the brilliant ability to find the boundary when needed and both have good cricket brains and are adept at 'pacing' a run-chase. Sometimes Martyn will be labelled as a slow batsmen, but he can turn it on when needed. His technique shown in hitting over cover is reminicent of Jaques Kallis (although he isn't the total batsmen that Kallis is). While not possessing brute force, he is a superb timer of the ball and is not 'out-of-form' at all...he just hasn't made a big score lately...meaning he's due this finals series ;)

Sorry...been a Martyn fan for almost 10 years =D

Hmm Harvey. I agree with the criticism he is receiving. You need to have a some-what reliable 7/8 and he has never been that. I have seen him come in when the side was under pressure and he never seems to come up with the goods. Opting to add an unbeaten 19 (12) instead, when we are batting first and have already added 300+. That maintains his average above 15 and secures his place in the team as a bowling all-rounder.

His bowling in the one-day game is top notch. Probably our main specialist weapon. Bring him on 1st change to nab a wicket when the openers are getting torn apart...or bowl him at the end to restrict runs. While not quick he is a better bowler than Watson on any day. Watson holds the edge with the bat, but did not take his chance last season when he was the selectors 'flavour of the month' and batted as high as number 3. Although Harvey is a proven big hitter for the Vics, he never has really unleashed anything deadly for Australia. Watson is by far a better lower-order slogger than Harvey, but needed an outstanding domestic season if he was to be re-selected this summer.

At the moment though, with our under-strength bowling attack, a bowling all-rounder is needed (Harvey), rather than a batting all-rounder (Watson). I completely agree with what was said above about Harvey, being 'Tried and Tested. but not really proven'. Its like he is some kind of default permanent fixture...but its not neccessarily warranted. I think when our bowling attack starts to improve again, Dominic Thorneley will be the next number 7 (batting all-rounder).

I too am quite a fan of Martyn and believe he is a very solid batsman. He worked extremely hard to get back into the aussie team after being axed. But he is not the only one to have had to do the hard yards. Look at both Hayden and Langer. More so Langer, but they both spent a fair amount of time out of the Australian team and had to work their asses off to get back in. But just because someone has worked hard and is working hard doesn't mean they should be in the team. Your right in saying that Martyn is a very technically correct batsman and quite solid, BUT this means fuck all if he isn't making runs. Ponting said Martyn is batting well but is just unlucky and getting out before he makes a big score, but you really think the team can afford to carry an unlucky batsman. If Martyn doesn't find some luck soon he will be dropped and in my opinion rightfully so. It doesn't matter how good a batsman you are and how technically correct you bat, if you can't make runs then your of no use to the side. I'm not saying Martyn should be dropped right now but he is rapidly running out of time. He hasn't made runs in the test series here, he is going to need a lot of LUCK to make some runs in India as will all the Australians.
I really hope Martyn can get lucky and make a few because it would be a shame to see him drop out of the team but with guys like Lehman, Love, Mahyer, Hussey and even Clarke possibly pushing for selection then the pressure is well and truely on and I cant see Ponting and the selectors willing to carry an unlucky (not out of form) batsman through entire tour of India.

Oh yeah and fuck Harvey off out of the 1 day team and bring back big Tom Moody!!! What a gun of an allrounder he was!!!

The Rest of the World

Hey, does anybody else remember the Rest of the World series way back when? And am I the only one salivating at the idea that it might be coming back ?

Australia are a long way ahead in the Test rankings right now, and it's somewhat likely they'll still be there come September 2005... either way, this is pretty exciting.

Yeah i heard about that on the news this morning.....would be very interesting.....it'd be a strange contest to me tho....cause on one hand, yes you are putting together the best players in the world in one team, but then on the other, most of them have never played together as a unit, therefore destroying any "team" feeling...wonder how they would perform? What were the results from previous series'?

i'm excited to see it anyhow!

Regarding Martyn for a second again.... his real test in test matches is ahead of him now that there are no Waughs around. Agree, he has fought hard for his spot and deserves it, has a great average.etc...... but there are not many important innings I can recall. He's had to come in after Hayden, Punter, Waughs etc,,,, have blitzed attacks, but of course thats no fault of his own. His stats back this up: 39 tests, only 5 tons. He certainly good enough. Talk about natural talent! I remember when he first started out some 12 years ago.....absolutley blizted attacks. Those huge back foot cover punches for 6 at the WACA. Beven and Lehamann going crazy also. Lehmann is probably the only one of those 3 who didnt alter his game. I DO remember Beven haing a great hook shot.

Vividly remember Clive Lloyd being very impressed with Lehmann when he played a 1st class game against him.... from there he was 12th man in Sydney aged 19.

Lehmann for Sri Lanka.
