the official 08-09 NFL thread

the difference between touching the plane and breaking the plane is miniscule and i can't imagine how, at the human level, one might make that distinction in the middle of an nfl football play.

from the definitions page on the official nfl website: "touchdown: When any part of the ball, legally in possession of a player inbounds, breaks the plane of the opponent’s goal line, provided it is not a touchback."

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but how is this not a catch? keep in mind all the ball has to do is simply TOUCH the white line.

again, I don't mean to beat a dead horse but it is very wrong to compare that call against the non-call in favor of the Ravens when they played the Tennessee Titans. I agree that the Titants were beating themselves with their three turnovers, however, great football teams find ways to win even when they are playing not so great.

due to the officials NOT calling an obvious delay of game penalty against Baltimore, they completed a third and long only to have Matt Stover kick the game winning field goal.

comparing an obvious mistake with a slightly controversial mistake is the fault here.

^i'll give you that. It was an obvious delay of game call. Anyone else think there should be a buzzer like there is in basketball to prevent these sort of miscues from occuring again? just some food for thought.

glad we could agree. not trying to disrespect the Baltimore Ravens here, as a fan of the Steelers you almost have to give those god damned Ravens respect - it was just such a huge blown call. oh well, it seems like destiny that the AFC North has to meet up again. you know the media and the fans were salivating over another Pittsburgh/Baltimore re-match.

a buzzer would be difficult, like in basektball. you would need some sort of an air horn to make sure it was loud enough in large colliseum-like football stadiums. what they should do, in my opinion, is follow the NBA's lead. for every NBA playoff game an extra official is assigned to each game to only watch the clock for infractions.

having an extra official just watching the clock would most certainly ensure that no clock mistakes were to be made throughout such monumental NFL playoff games. I think that they should do this.

well it was a blown call but even if it was called I doubt ti would of changed anything the Titans gave up the ball to much

but it seems like the year is the year of karma (i guess) in the NFL. Chargers got screwed by the refs againist Denver and they come back and make it as a 8-8 team adn eliminate Denver. Ravens got screwed in thier last game againist the Steelers (the ball didn't cross) and they get a miss call back in their favour (last game)

the ball did touch, I don't understand how everyone is saying that it didn't.

look at it this way. initially, the call was not a touchdown and the ball was spotted half an inch outside of the goal line. Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin then challenged the call. for a call to be overturned in the NFL there must be indisputable evidence otherwise.

the call was overturned. meaning the referees most obviously saw their mistake.

way to start the game. warner to fitzgerald td. that first drive was a thing of beauty. The eagles D looked like it was lost.

GO CARDINALS

the Cardinals shocked the world! now they play the Pittsburgh Steelers in what looks like a very interesting match-up. the Cards have long-time ties to the ever-reaching hand of the Steelers organization through their current head coach Ken Whisenhut, who used to be a highly regarded offensive co-ordinator in Pittsburgh. in just two seasons in Arizona, he has turned them into a playoff team and has now carried them to the Super Bowl.

the Steelers looked stellar again. just when you thought that Baltimore had an answer for their Steel Curtain Defense, Troy Pawandmaulu takes it to the house! I reached an existential calm about my deep sated love for football and my obsession with the black and gold. I am nowhere near as ferocious and hellbent of a fan as I was when they won their first SB (in my existence). now I know they are a great team and I expect them to perform greatly.

largely, I just want Pittsburgh to win this SuperBowl for Head Coach Mike Tomlin's sake. he seems to be a great football mind, and even more important, a great person. if he wins this SB I suppose he would be the youngest head coach to do so in the NFL. I am very proud that he won his first AFC Championship game, something that his antecedent Bill Cowher could not do until late in his career (even at home).

Pittsburgh's goin to the Sooooper Bowl!

you and me both lady! always great to have you around my cherished corner of BL.

re: Eagles sucking. yeah, they did although Donovan McNabb can't be blamed for ALL of their problems (as the questionable Eagles fans usually do). it is kind of funny how, in just the tail end of this season, he went from Eagles fans praising him, to calling for him to be benched, to being praised again... and now what? is the city of "Brotherly Love" going to despise him yet again?

I have never really like McNabb, for reasons I can't really put a finger on, however I will stand by the fact that I think their failures on the big stage (NFCC games) is more on the play calling than his usually above-average QB play.

you and me both. how awesome is Fitzgerald though? he makes Kurt Warner look young again and is always a threat deep in the field.

I have been a fan of his ever since his NCAA days playing for the Panthers.

Now the fun begins ;)

what a great set of games that set up what promises to be an amazing super bowl. Pittsburgh is an obvious favorite, for good reason: they are a more well balanced team. That defense is plain nasty, and Roethlisberger looked nearly unflappable against even the mighty Ravens squad.

What will the steel curtains answer be for Boldin AND fitzgerald? they both offer warner explosive big play potential, and those other guys he throws too don't seem to be chumps either. edgerrin james ran well against the eagles, I know he isn't going to beat the steelers though. Warners going to have to have a huge day for his cards to have a chance, probably a bigger performance than the one he had against the eagles. Arizonas defense, while much improved, seemed helpless once mcnabb got on a roll in the 2nd half. Give them credit though, they made the stops when they needed to. Point being, though, arizona isn't going to win with defense: they are going to win in a shoot out.

Anyone know the status on hines ward? his absence would be huge. Looks like his knee or groin got tweaked in the first quarter.

too early to tell on Hines Ward's injury status. however, this will most certainly be the major story line leading up in the 13 days to the Super Bowl. I think he will play. this is one tough dude we are talking about.

yea id bet a ridiculous amount of money of the steelers. like to be honesyt i think the ravens or steelers could have beat the eagles or the cardinals. the cardinals should consider it a gift of god to have made it this far. now the pain will start.....well in 2 weeks at least.
