the official 08-09 NFL thread

you think that the Colts can pull a Steelers? it is possible, but with their spotty defense and weak run game I find it more difficult for them to pull it off.

also, I would say that Kurt Warner or Drew Brees are better than Peyton Manning this year. hell, even his brother might be better. only because of his horrid start.

how about Brady Quinn getting injured and out for the season? hard times ahead for the Browns, who will have to play an underachieving Derek Anderson for the remainder of the season; only for next season to start as the same quagmire as the last.

They'd be a helluva lot better with a #4 right now.
No they wouldn't. QB hasn't been the problem. The Packers would be better if they had actually had running game this year (it's starting to improve) and if they had a run defense. If the Packers still had Favre, the record would probably look just the same as it does now. Rodgers game play has been just as good as Favre's and his leadership has been fine too.

I think they should keep doin it. This isn't the only year they suck, the sportswriters just need something to talk about.

tradition is tradition. we all know how the NFL is in love with history (how many times a game do you hear "the first time the score has ever been like this!" or "the first time so many first downs in a row were scored since 1967!") and tradition. the city of Detroit is declining and the Detroit Lions are declining - thankfully the economic bailout should help the automakers and then help Detroit's economy. could Calvin Johnson and another first round pick in this year's draft bail out the future of the Detroit Lions??

imagine the Lions drafting Michael Crabtree first. imagine Crabtree and Johnson flanking one another. chances are they will go for a QB, but a sports fan can imagine!

Nicatina and ali - your Patriots, who didn't listen to the memo that they shouldn't be any good without Tom Brady, are playing my Steelers Sunday. any thoughts? I think it should be a good game, Matt Cassel has very quietly gotten two 400+ yard games in a row. can he do the same thing against a star-studded Steelers defense? should be a good game, and it has many implications for both the Pats (who need to make the playoffs) and the Steelers (who need that first round playoff bye).

just glancing at the numbers, the patriots seem to match up well against the steelers. whatever happens, should be a great game to continue this classic rivalry.

i picked the pats :)

alasdair

it is such a shame about Tom Brady. I have never liked him, because he is from Michigan, and as a person who is from Ohio that would be blasphemous - but you never want to see a team's star player injured. at least I don't, because that is not good sports ethics, and the football gods are very vengeful upon those with knee-jerk tempers. the Patriots have always been a thorn in the Steeler's side and have stopped them from going to the SuperBowl many years in the playoffs. with Tom Brady out it looks like they can capitalize and make it to the SB if they can just get past a great Titans team.

one comparison between the Steelers and the Patriots is that despite injuries (the Steelers have been without their QB, their star RB, and some key defensive players) both teams have stepped up. so many times in the NFL you will see a team just wait a game or even a SEASON out just on the excuse of injuries. teams that are solid contenders year in and year out, like the Pats and Stillers, will contend no matter what.

in an age where money is everything for football players, this pleases me greatly.

I pick my Steelers ;) wish I was in San Fran so we could knock some back and watch the game at a bar like respectable American citizens.

Man, this is going to be a good game. One thing that really stands out to me is that the Steelers red zone defense is the best in the league, one facet of the offense where Cassel has really struggled in. Not only that but you guys got the best defense in the league, both against the run and pass. It will be very interesting to see what kind of game plan Belicheck rolls out, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 5 WR spread for at least the beginning of the game considering how Cassel has been throwing the ball.

And speaking of Cassel, he has really been SOLID these past couple games. He has proven me wrong, I didn't think he would be able to take the reins and utilize his receivers to their talents, but given some time to start he has finally found his groove. He seems to be much more comfortable in the pocket and is finding the wide open receivers that he hadn't before. He is also picking his spots when deciding to run, and most of the times he does it has been huge. He has a big pay day awaiting him next season. Some people calling into Boston talk radio are even calling for us to forget Brady ... lol.

It's going to be a showdown. We need this win bad if we want to stay in the playoff hunt, so I expect some real smash mouth hard hitting intense football.

both teams need it bad, so it should be some epic football ahead.

and lol @ the Boston radio stations. man... if Bellicheck ever listened to some of those Massholes that call in he would have been fired a long, long time ago.

that Steelers game was complete and total defensive domination. with a defense that good how can you root against the Super Steelers? they have a Super Bowl caliber defense for sure... can the offense hold up its end of the bargain? you can most likely count on Big Ben to make one goofy assed interception a game.

looks like the Cleveland Browns are into some trouble with Derek Anderson out for the season, and with Brady Quinn out for the season. honestly, I feel very bad for Anderson. he got his starting QB job back and he had a chance to either build his stock up in the draft or to possibly win the starting QB spot back from Quinn.

instead of all that happening he gets hurt, and as he leaves the Cleveland football stadium, for possibly the last time he is ever in a Browns jersey - the fans boo him heavily. stay classy Cleveland - that man made it to the pro bowl only a year ago and now you treat him like the next Tim Couch.

the Steelers are running the gauntlet, with matchups against New England, Dallas, Tennessee, and Baltimore.

now Pittsburgh is playing Dallas, in Heinz Field. despite all the college championship games I think that this game is going to be the best out of the whole weekend of vainglorious football. over-abundance has never felt so good.

it will be a match-up of two great defenses, that like to sack the QB. now Pittsburgh leads the league in sacks but Dallas is only a couple away from their record. I think that the winner of the game is going to be the QB who can evade the sack better, and as statistics show, Big Ben ain't too good with that. hopefully they can eek a victory out despite Big Ben's troubled shoulder and his newly hurt knee (in practice).

hopefully Tony Romo can not let the pressures of his injured pinky (lol) get to him.

another great defensive, decisive victory by Pittsburgh. next, in the running of their gauntlet-like schedule is the Baltimore Ravens. the Steelers are (definitively) ranked number 1 in defense while the Ravens are (approximately) ranked 2nd in defense.

in today's slash and dash offensive NFL showcasing, does this make a good game to watch? will the score be something like 3-2??

I hate records with a passion. They don't mean anything anymore. Win streaks, most yards, shit like that is cool. But announcers and ESPN will look for any type of "record" they can find.

"This, ladies and gentlemen, is the first time in the month of december when a puerto rican lefty kicker has booted a field goal of 50 yards on the road in the united states!"

another great defensive, decisive victory by Pittsburgh.

A sincere "congratulations" on your favorite team's victory in the most recent epic battle in arguably the greatest all-time rivalry in the history of the post-merger NFL.

But "decisive?"

Out of 60:00 minutes, the Steelers led for a grand total of 4:20.

Now the latter is a number that makes many of us on this website very happy - but leading for 7 percent of a game ought hardly be called "decisive."

the Patriots have always been a thorn in the Steeler's side and have stopped them from going to the SuperBowl many years in the playoffs.

with Tom Brady out it looks like they can capitalize and make it to the SB if they can just get past a great Titans team.

STILL sleeping on the the Colts (the league's hottest team, with, BY FAR, its most valuable player), Axl? :)

while it would be dumb to "sleep" on Manning, I don't see them as such a force to be reckoned with. they are winning games by scores of 10-3, and with a style that can barely beat the defensive juggernauts such as the Cleveland Browns. however, they still are winning.

this year's red-hot AFC wildcard team, for me, will be the Baltimore Ravens. they are playing nasty defense and offensively are making some shots down the field.
