the next step

High school's ending for me soon. My grandma owns property out in the sticks near the cascades but she lives in Arizona. She gave me permission to live up there and I thought great, I'll start a farm. But to start a farm you need money and there are no job opportunities out there especially in this recession. So I decided I'll postpone my farmer dream and join the Navy. I can't think of a downside (except staying sober). I'll put in about four years, get experience I could use in the outside world, while saving all the money I earn. After I should have enough to start my farm. I already have the property I would use the money I saved from the Navy to buy equipment. I'm plan on eventually taking myself of the grid, plenty of game and fresh water up there.
This will happen in about seven months. What do you guys think about my plan?

It sounds like a good plan to me. I have a friend in the navy he works on the flight deck of a carrier and loves it. You will get a chance to see lots of the country and maybe the world depending on your job and deployment its also one of the safer branchs to be in right now. When you get out they will pay for your college so yea its a pretty fire ass deal if you can handle the discipline and other bullshit that goes along with it. Goodluck dude.

No downsides... other than being in an organization whose sole purpose is to kill other people. But many people are okay with that, and it is an excellent means to an end. And I must say that I respect your end thoroughly.

Best of luck to you!

Dave, come on, if it were their sole purpose to kill it would be pointless... I think their purpose is to protect America and her citizens freedom and to be the big shark in the ocean that will bite if you screw around in our waters.. you are a left wing Marxist, don't rain on our boys parade with that crap.
Chief, great plan man. If I had another go at it I think what the service does for those who serve is above and beyond any help you could get otherwise. The benefits are great. Go to school and learn how to farm efficiently, I have my degree in soil science, and I actually farm down here in Texas. We grow corn cotton sorghum and wheat. You may be more suited to a organic vegetable farm, you could sell at market or get some connects with restaurants growing for them. That would be the best way to live off grid, larger scale farms have quite a bit of government intervention. Ever grow poppies? Nice to smoke opium that came from the garden! Best of luck chief...
