The New Orleans scene

^ I'm glad you enoy the Meters, too! for how inspiring they are to music as a whole I'm surprised more people don't know about them. one of the best band of all-time. sometimes jazz can be a bit too polished for me and I love the Meters because they are grimey, bluesy, and funky in their display of NO jazz.

jazz is great but please leave fusion out of this. fusion is a fucking cancer

See, this is what I hate about music "scenes", the elitism. It's either not pure enough, or not cutting edge enough, and people who don't agree aren't cool enough or whatever. I don't give a shit if it's "cliched", I just like the music :\

here:

the new orleans jazz and heritage fm there.
http://www.wwoz.org/

sure it's streamable.

it's just lame for all the amazing incredible music that comes out of new orleans they associate it with stuff like dr.john. Not even trad or anything. If you want some jazz go listen to straight up jazz, jeez.

what is more NOLA cliche than Dr. John and Professor Longhair? Look we write jazzy songs about swamps and Decatur street, weee. When people think of NOLA they'll think of our songs and think we all live under marshy water with half aligator catholic women. Those guys aren'teven really jazz. Jazz = Jelly Roll Morton
and the other guys playing piano in the houses of the pleasure faith.

just because I like metal doesn't mean I don't understand or appreciate jazz, I'm just so sick of when people find out I'm from new orleans, they always ask = katrina, and isn't [harryconnickjrdrjohnprofessorlonghair] the best nola musician ever?!?!#!!??!!?!?! You must just LOVE jazz. & my name. It's all ridiculous. I just wish people would look deeper into that shit instead of cds of people they sell on Bourbon street.

Never said I have even heard of that band. But, New Orleans made jazz. Thats a fact. You should be proud of that, and embrace it. Not shy away from it because it is trendy there! relax, no problems

Way to demonstrate my point!

Yeah, but I don't like trad jazz, I like the "cliched" stuff, I like the Mardi Gras music, I like the music I'm being introduced to on Treme, certainly much more than that punk crap you linked to. Sorry if I'm just not cool enough for you :\

Yeah, but I don't like trad jazz

you like jazz but don't like jazz?

so what EXACTLY are you looking for?

if you don't like Trad, you mean you don't like jelly roll morton and that line of jazz? but Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue could also be considered "trad" and if they haven't shown him on Treme they fucking up.

do you just want second lines and that's it?

come on you two-- relax.

Kenickie comes from a town where they have to put up with tourists, and a commonly held belief about their music scene... its natural to bristle.

bp happens to honestly like that music, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm not used to having to intercede on behalf of decorum in this forum. ;)

What I don't like is elitists telling me what I should and shouldn't like. Actually, no, I don't mind being told what I should like, that's fine, that's what recommendations are, it's the being told what I shouldn't like that raises my heckles.

do you like jelly roll morton and that kind of jazz? he is considered trad but i think is one of most important jazz musicians ever. do you like Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue? that could also be considered trad but he also does covers of black sabbath songs second line style.

or are you just looking for drumline/second line esque things?

I wouldn't know, tbh, hence why I started the thread. I'll youtube them both and get back to you.

Check out the New Orleans jazz orchestra.. I believe that is the name.

John McLaughlin is my favorite jazz musician of all time. He is all over the spectrum of jazz, but not very Louisiana.. still good
