Hi does anyone know statistically what the most effective anti depressant is available in the UK?

Thanks

There are tons of studies involving the efficacity of several different anti-depressants. When you go through all of them they don't really indicate that there is one or even a set of anti-depressants that is generally superior to the rest. When chosing and AD the patients entire medical history should be reviewed to decrease the possibility of prescribing an AD that could give more pronounced side-effect, and to increase the possibilty of prescribing an AD that would best treat the symptoms. There a ton of AD's out there, but really chosing the right one is often a game of trial and error. Are you one on now, what others have you been on? And what are your symptoms?

hi thanks for the reply ive tried citalpram mirtazapine prozac and a couple of others but I can't remember the names but I've given up on them and started to use tramadol (not from the doc) cuz non of them work n I was sick of having to wait 6 weeks for them 2 work just to find out they didn't. Its just low mood and anxiety. The doc gave me 2 packs of Valium but won't give me any more. Any suggestions? Any other benzos that the doc might be more willing to script? The trams ent worin no more cuz of tolerance. I'm starting to think fuck it n just go to heroin just to ease the depression but I'm trying so hard not to.

Well, clonazepam is a good benzodiazepine to take for anxiety if you are taking one on a daily basis. It has a long half-life, and it is quite effective in relieving anxiety and inducing relaxation. It has become quite popular in psychiatry, and he might be willing to script you a low dose of that. For mood, I might suggest Effexor or Pristiq, which are quite similar in effect to tramadol except for the opioid effects. They act as SNRI's at the doses usually rx'd. Or you could try an SSRI + Wellbutrin (bupropion) to help with mood. Both could help. Just a few thoughts.

Definitely don't make the jump up to heroin... It will NOT make your life better.

Firstly I'd push for CBT if your not going to take any ADs, I've just finished a course and have had really good results from it, your GP should reallt have been taking to you about this but GPs can be so crap, if your getting nowhere with one then try anothr, its easy to book in with another GP or even surgery in most places and you do not have to give a reason

Heroin is definitely not the answer, please don't even go there, even Tramadol mis problematic, anything over 4oomgs in a day could cause seizure and the anti depressant properties are fairly low along side quite a high risk of dependency.

Have you tried some of the more obvious mood lifters, looking at your diet and taking more exercise? this can often help if its just low mood, but if you have any thoughts of self harm get yourself back to a doctor ASAP, don't be a number in a statistics report.

Best Wishes
