Travel The MEGA Travel Thread!

ultra exotic? yes. mysterious? yes. far away? no. but since it's been mentioned several times, i felt i had to pic spam, because it seriously is the crown jewel of the American South, and maybe the crown jewel of all North America.

New Orleans, Louisiana:

lafitte's bar --- it has no electricity. it maintains it's the oldest bar in new orleans, nay, the oldest bar in all of north america 'settled by civilized people'. it has been in the same spot, same building, since 1772.

new orleans also has an abandoned six flags that Pander really wants to explore:

yes, that's how it looks. no, it's not Katrina remnants there. it's been eaten alive by the swamp, not the storm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngorongoro_Conservation_Area

The main feature of the NCA is the Ngorongoro Crater, a large, unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, is 610 m (2,000 ft) deep and its floor covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi)

id like to stay somewhere that mentions not being responsible for death or injury plus lions, leopards, venomous snakes and scorpions being everywhere on the safety sign

Planning a trip to....

Well next year July-August me and the Mrs. are planning a trip to Ibiza <----> Portugal ----> Netherlands (The first 2 interchangeable).

We want to attend some music festivals, clubs etc and finish off in the Netherlands for a massive party, then head to Amsterdam.

My question is where can I obtain information on different festivals and what DJ's will be playing so we know how to plan this holiday.

Sorry newbie question but I have no idea on these things (never been overseas)

Mine might not be that exotic to most, but I have always wanted to plan a trip to the UK. England would be the main goal....just want to see the countryside and see all the places that inspired 90% of the worlds greatest music.

For a more exotic destination I would like to visit The big island someday...just seems like it is a real paradise. Maybe Fiji as well.

* I want to visit: The Atacama Desert, Chile (the driest place on earth)
* Galapagos Islands
* I can't wait to visit Palau, specifically Eil Malk island, home to Fifth Lake (Ongeim'l Tketau). It's also known as Jellyfish lake. you can swim with literally millions of Jellyfish - they don't sting, as they don't have any predators in the lake, therefore haven't evolved that way. A friend of mine is moving to Palau later in the year for a few years, to work as a dive instructor. She's invited us to stay with her when we go
* Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico - the home of the largest radio telescope in the world.
* I want to see Aurora Borealis before I die
* The Nascar Lines in Peru... I want to travel all over Peru and Bolivia.

They are some of the destinations on my bucket list :)

It's pretty epic. Northern Chile is cool place with a lot to see and do, San Pedro De Atacama is the main spot for heading out to a variety of cool activities and places of natural beauty.

The Nascar Lines in Peru... I want to travel all over Peru and Bolivia.

Peru and Bolivia are awesome. <3

Where abouts in the former Yugoslavia are they situated? It's a big region consisting of many countries. Travelled round most of the countries but didn't see any of them sadly, all quite cool in a strange soviet / communist type of way.

My next trip is an overland trip from Moscow, TransMongolian railway to UlaanBanter, Mongolia then on to Beijing, China. Then I'll spend a month travelling round China before taking a boat down the Mekong into Northern Thailand, spend a month volunteering with hill tribes then a month exploring parts of Thailand I haven't seen yet. Finally I'll try and get a job in Bangkok teaching English. Might even spend a month at a Muay Thai school trying to get fit.

Having given it some thought since I last posted, there is only one other place (besides where I'm going this summer) that I must see before I die:

I hope to get there this fall, but if that falls through I've promised myself that I must visit it once if at all possible; it's become my hajj, basically.

nice to see another act commissioned by former FYROM President Tito. he was praised to many of the people in that region of Eastern Europe for many reasons, despite being a Communist

*bump* for the prune - and will be printing this for my roomie who's making an epic summer road trip in a couple weeks (national parks in the US)

I was on the road several days recently (driving; two of my companions were backpackers) and I REALLY regretted having a suitcase instead of a rucksack. I have a small car and it made for a lack of space to say the least.

I also brought way too much in the way of clothing.

Next trip (in a few weeks) I am traveling much lighter, and will have picked up a rucksack by then. I will need my Swiss Army laptop backpack but am foregoing all but the smallest purse.

3x change of clothes (recommended baggy cargo pants and tee shirt + hoodie) Put your under ware and socks in ziplock bags to keep them dry under all circumstances.
9x meals/snacks
2x foot ware of choice (recommended one pair of combat or high end hiking boots, one pair sneakers)
1x baseball hat
1x boonie/bush hat (both for sun protection in case of unplanned hike or car breaking, same with snacks)
1x multitool
1x larger toolset if you are taking a car or motorcycle or bicycle for roadside repairs.
1x mess set if planning camping or nature excursions
1x some type of sleeping gear (bag, a few blankets etc)
100 feet of paracord...its always handy
1x roll of duct tape...also always handy
2x flashlight and batteries (2 in case one breaks)
1x first aid kit- buy a fairly complete one, don't skimp.
1x canteen
either water purifying tablets or a small bottle of bleach and your research on how much to add to render water safe but not toxic.
Vaccines- hep a/b tetanus, diphtheria, typhoid, whooping cough..actually, just ask your doctor, I don't know what shots you already have and which you don't

optional/etc/trip dependant
laptop
mp3 player
weapon if legally allowed for either a hunting trip or self defence in allowed jurisdictions.
fishing gear and license if nature based trip...great way to spend a few hours
cellphone
radio's either FRS/CB if with companions and going into the bush or a hand-held HAM rig if your a licensed HAM, to kill hours by chewing the fat on the local repeater.
a journal/notepad to document the journy
maps if your navigating yourself
map making supplies (paper, compass, pace beads, GPS) if your heading into the bush so you can map your route both as part of your journal and so you can find your way out.
Life jacket if your planning on a lot of boating.

All carried in a rucksack with attached metal frame and waste and chest cross straps and a garbage bag lining the inside of the main compartment to keep shit dry. (A Canadian 1982 pattern ruck with frame is about 80 bucks and totally worth it)

9+ years in the army has taught me how and what to carry when heading into the unknown.
