Travel The MEGA Travel Thread!

Yeah but you still at least have to have stayed there SHM, you could easily have went on to write a bad review afterwards whether the hostel owner gave you free internet time or not. With LP they can just take a review from elsewhere, look in and get a quick glance at the place, ask someone else or worst of all get paid big bucks to write something positive even when the place is shit. I've seen places that get glowing reviews in LP have terrible rating on hostelbookers. They don't actually have to stay there yet they feel entitled to write a review and promote the accomodation. I might pretend to be a guidebook writer on this upcoming trip to get free shit.

If you write a guidebook please don't recommend people travel in tuk-tuks. Seriously those things f**king suck, in Bangkok anyway. Hot, stinky & dangerous. Yes tourists take a ride at least once just to say you did it, but how can they quote me more for a trip than it would cost in an A/C taxi?

^ LOL, I think in my year in bkk I rode a Tuk Tuk exactly 2 times - one because it was my first day at a new school and I went the wrong way, and I needed to turn back quickly and the only vehicle available was the TukTuk; the second time was because a visiting friend wanted to. EDIT: Oh, and a third time when that dutch kickboxer pulled me into one :D

Aside from the Skytrain (which is mostly useless for practicality - especially that it doesn't go to the other bank of the river), my preferred method of transport was by and large the motorcycle-taxies.

As for the gem scam, I never fell for it myself... wanna know why? Because I read about it in a guidebook before setting foot in that cesspool! ;) (Ironically, I later took up Gemmology for a hobby and going through lengthy discussions of whether this emerald is really American or whether it is out of the recent yucky Belo Horizonte Brazilian batch - what? Paraiba Brazilian? But you just finished telling me that it is an Emerald, not a Tourmaline! - was usually enough to weed out all the scammers ;)).

WRT accommodation reviews, even IF they were paid to review, how much skewed can you get with low-budget stuff? "Does it have a private toilet or not? Does it have internet or not? Does it have a restaurant or not? Which street is it on? etc" I was never disappointed with guidebooks when I stuck to the very basics and took the author's opinion just as that: another traveler's opinion. See, if I were to take Spade's opinion of Thailand as anything more than just an opinion, I would have been absolutely outraged at how he lied to me! ;) <3

Oh, and btw - the taxi-to-shop scam is even worse in Cairo, Egypt - just in case anyone reading this plans on going there.

Is thailand really populated by such a large amount of assholes or are you guys just joking? A guy who is good friends with my mom has lived in thailand for quite abit and loves the place. He lives with his partner who i believe is from thailand and he has nothing but good to say about the place. Well except that after his b/f lost his job and got a lower paying one they now have a place about as small as the kitchen in the place they had before :\ . So unless i wanna sleep in the bathtub i really can't go visit now lol.

As for scams well thats bound to be tried on foreiners anywhere really. A taxi driver in Toronto tried that on me once when he drove the longest possible route he could go and circuled around a number of blocks that he had already passed. He recognized my accent almost right away so i guess he figured he could pull one over on me but i knew the city pretty well and just gave him the amount of cash i thought was right and told him to fuck off.

^ You'll get polarized opinions on it.

Me? Although I no longer boil with hatred as I did in back in '08, I still emphasize that I've actually in all my travels never been to a country that I so thoroughly disliked, people being the first reason, their "food" a close second.

$40 for a taxi from Bangkok airport into town is madness. How did that happen? You didn't go to the official taxi rank with the little desks outside where the women asks where you are going and explains the system? She tells the driver where you are going, gives you a receipt etc. Lesson learnt indeed.

I don't really remember honestly. I think I just went outside and went with the first taxi that I saw. Was tired, had the money and didn't care.

They can charge you more because they are for tourists. Much better to take a metered taxi.

Do you really need to read it in a guidebook to realise it's an obvious scam? Tuk tuk rides for 10baht and cheap gem stones....sure. 8)

It's the principle of it more than anything though. And I do think they can skew it pretty massively.

My experiences of the people is that they are all pretty lovely. Some examples of how friendly and helpful the people are. Met an estate agent in BKK got friendly with her, a week later when I was due to leave BKK to go to Kanchanaburi she offers to drive me there after she finishes her work even though it's about a 2hr drive away and she has to drive back first thing the next morning for work, at no expense to myself. Another girl I met in Khon Kaen when she finds out I'm gonna head to Laos the next day (3hrs away) decides to drive me all the way there to the capital and refuses to take any money for fuel. No benefit in it for her. I can't imagine anyone here in the UK driving a relative stranger to another country miles and miles away. Everywhere you go people are happy and friendly and will go out of their way to help.

I still emphasize that I've actually in all my travels never been to a country that I so thoroughly disliked, people being the first reason, their "food" a close second

It's amazing how much we differ on this as I think the Thai people must be the friendliest and most helpful people I've ever met and the food ranks up there as some of the best in the world. Eating in Thailand is an absolute joy. :)

Nowhere else in the world I've been compares on those 2 aspects.

Yes another word for these assholes is farang ;)
In all honesty though Thailand does seem to attract some of the worst types of foreigners from around the world. (most of them based in Pattaya.)

As for locals I find them very friendly and approachable. Living there I never had any fear of harm or violence like I might feel during a night out in the West. The most annoying thing imo is how you're looked upon as a source of easy money. Once you learn how things work, including corruption, you then can pretty much go about your way and do what you like. Fighting or complaining about the system will just frustrate you and you'll start to resent the place.

Pattaya is everything that's wrong with Thailand. They should drop a nuclear bomb on Walking Street in peak season and do the world a favour.

The rest of the country is fantastic though. :)

It's absolutely loathesome. I spent about 12 days there, not through choice and I pretty much resented every minute of it. Full of the worst type of Farangs and the place is an absolute shit hole, the beaches have horrible gravel sand, are dirty and polluted and the nightlife dire, nothing but tacky neon lit bars full of hookers and shit loud music. There is nothing else to do in Pattaya but beach by day and bars by night.

I spent 6 months living in Thailand, mostly in Koh Samui, and the last few days in Pattaya (since it's only 1.5 hours from BKK). Walking Soi is an eye-opener alright.. I went there with a group of male friends/colleagues who live there full time and of course we got all the tours of the girly bars... all as you'd expect. Apparently there's a decent crowd of couples who frequent them too, to pick up a girl to share for the night - my friend picked up a bargirl early on, and because I was sitting right there, and was nice to her and talking to her, she presumed it was for "Mr Rob and you wife!" As far as the bargirl scene is concerned, every single man going to Thailand should make it his mission to read "Private Dancer" - it's not a particularly great book, but it does hit the nail on the head as regards certain perceptions of relationships held by Thais and Westerners, and show you where they fail to converge. Pattaya is the extreme end of the spectrum though, the rest of Thailand is not like that, and even the seedy areas are quite tame compared to the Walking Soi.

I liked the people. I made some good friends there, and I miss them still. One of my Thai friends , on my leaving night, told me that she had never liked farang girls, that farang girls always look down their nose at you and think you all prostitutes, and that she was surprised to find a farang girl who was nice and normal. She's quite a spiky creature, and she's had her fair share of farang guys hit on her much to the discontent of their girlfriends, so I was touched by that sentiment! I miss her crazy laugh, and I miss my other Thai friend's gentle manner.. these two people I would actually call friends rather than acquaintances. And I like the food. Extra chilli with everything, phet-phet makmak, khob khuun krap. Oh yeah!

There are seedy sides to everywhere, but Thailand is a very live-and-let-live country... unless you get into a scrape with the law. All across Thailand I saw the Sandra Gregory Story on sale in 7-11, and I do know of a couple of tourists who were stitched up by the local police planting stuff in their baggage, but it serves as a warning to farangs not to cross law enforcement... that side of the country is sadly very corrupt. People have mentioned for example that Koh Samui is very seedy - well, yes, there is a seedy element to the bars of Chaweng and Lamai, but on the other side of the island, Lipa Noi beach is very beautiful and peaceful without the hullabaloo of Chaweng by night. Or the stink... sewage ain't great!

Before I went to Thailand, I'd never heard anyone say a bad word about it. People always raved about the food, the countryside, the people, the warmth of the Land of Smiles... and after travelling around there on my own as a single farang female for 6 months, I can see the downsides of course but I still love the country and would go back in a heartbeat.

Samadhi, you will have a wonderful honeymoon! The big 5-star honeymoon hotels are the Centara Grand, Anantara, Kadaburi and Amari Reef in Chaweng, these are very plush. Whether you go to one of these or to one of the smaller hotels, you will no doubt be very well looked after and made to feel like you are on the most special getaway ever! One thing if you do go for a smaller hotel - don't go to World Resort in Mae Nam, whatever you do.. the pool there is disgusting! Stay near the beaches in Chaweng (for central area), Lamai (second most nightlife) , Bophut (and the Fisherman's Village) or Lipa Noi (quiet and serene). I love Samui, there's plenty to do, although my liver will never be the same again..

You left your crystal outside overnight to.... energize them? LOL. Man... fucking backpackers....

Uhh YEAH, that's how you charge them. Duh. I do that to mine every full moon.

I really want to go back to Thailand within the next few years. Except this time I'm bringing the boy and we are going to make rock climbing the focus of the trip. :)

^That sounds awesome. :) I've been wanting to a bit of rock climbing here myself but I'm a beginner. Hopefully, I can find an experienced climber to join with me at Krabi.

Oh Calla, thank you *so* much for your recommendations xoxo

We're staying at Elements Boutique Resort in Phang Ka (south west side), and while the beach isn't as nice as the east side, the resort has received rave reviews and the interaction we've had thusfar with the manager has been stellar :)

Do you have any recommendations for a mid-range resort in Chaweng? We're spending the first 4 nights on the east side, somewhere not as plus (we're really splashing out on Elements), so want something that's still nice, but not AS swanky. We're so confused with all the choice! We think we've found somewhere great, but then the reviews on tripadvisor, etc aren't good. Any advice would be greatly appreicate <3

I actually read Private Dancer while in Thailand - i picked it up at the Phuket airport bookstore - it was a huge eye-opener.

That's sounds charming! I'll have to stop through there. :D

TBH, Jamshyd is the only person, online or IRL, who I've heard complain about the Thai people at all. Everyone else gushes about their warmth & hospitality. Jam, could it perhaps be just you? ;)

Seven days to go. %)

Avoid at all costs though I think you're going to Phuket which I don't rate a whole lot higher.

Really? *scratches head* I personally didn't find them to be that "warm and hospitable" myself... not that they were not nice. They were just normal people. Nothing to gush about in my experience. I don't know. Honestly I find people here in the South (USA) to be much more warm and hospitable in general than anyone I have come across in varying other countries. It wasn't until I moved down here that I ever had the thought: "Wow.. people really are different here."
