The Man in the Long, Dark Coat
It turns out that the deaf man was
The man in the long, dark coat.
He could hear and say things that
We wouldn't let ourselves
Hear, much less say out loud.
In his pocket was my lucky match.
I told him he could light it when
He wanted me to stop writing.
The soles of his shoes were old,
So he didn't need the match box
Wen he wanted to light it.
He was like a buffalo soldier --
Willing to risk everything to say anything.
The only things he had to lose were my match, his shoes, and
That long dark coat.
When it came time to light that match,
He stood in the puddle and
Took off his shoes and coat --
Leaving himself dressed only in the sky.
He bent down and struck it, and
Within moments, he said his first words --
I was blind, but I knew he was in pain.
He was my best friend, so now I am
The man in the long, dark coat.
I never stopped writing,
And I started seeing.
