ISIS Releases Video Featuring Awkward Australian Teen Jihadist

Cutting an odd figure as he's flanked by a squad of gun-toting fighters, a 17-year-old Australian is the centerpiece of a new video released by the Islamic State. In the clip, the teen, who has since been identified as Abdullah Elmir from southwest Sydney, rails against various world leaders in an unmistakably Aussie accent.

The video, which is about 90 seconds long, was uploaded online on Monday. It is issued in English as a direct message to the West, "especially to the people of Australia." Elmir makes threats such as putting "the black flag on top of Buckingham Palace" and "on top of the White House."

Beyond featuring the type of person you may associate more with a youth hostel than a terror group, the 90-second video is strange in other ways. It contains an odd mix of awkward edits and numerous pans over a crowd of young, shifty-eyed fighters who can't really decide which camera to look at or how to stand.

In June, Elmir told his parents that he was going on a fishing trip, but never returned. He left with a 16-year-old friend known as Feiz, who was reportedly intercepted by his father en route to Iraq, while Elmir carried on, according to The Australian Associated Press.

Elmir's parents say their son was "brainwashed," and friends described him as a normal teen.

The use of a foreign fighter as a mouthpiece, especially an English-speaking one, is consistent with previous propaganda issued by the Islamic State. Speaking with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, terrorism expert Greg Barton said that videos like this are blatant recruitment tactics intended to lure more young foreigners.

Though Elmir's speech may seem awkward or banal to the average viewer, Barton explains that "for teenagers or 20-something young men, it’s probably quite moving."

It is true that ISIS seeks to recruit idealistic young Muslims and I wonder if he is now realising what he has himself in for now that he's there.

What is more interesting than the fact that this guy went, is the reactions of his friends and the muslim community as though it was a perfectly reasonable life choice.


"His close friends are trying to get everyone to respect Abdullah's decision and not cuss him as he was just as normal as anyone else."

Another friend told the ABC through Facebook: "Never make judgements on a situation you've never been in. Never make judgements on decisions you've never had to make."

While another said: "I swear, people get mad because we defend his legacy, he is still our mate and that's not changing anything."

The only people defending him from what I read were his friends, not muslims...

Silma Ihram from the Australian Muslim Women's Association said she was saddened Elmir had been taken advantage of by Islamic extremists and warned more needed to be done to de-radicalise youths.

"I'm really terribly disappointed in seeing a young man destroy his life like that and upset and angry at the people who've duped him into thinking he'll be a hero by being part of their PR campaign," she said.

Lydia Shelly, a solicitor with the Muslim Legal Network, said they are also trying to piece together what led the teenager from Bankstown to join the IS group.

"I'm very worried as well about this boy who has made such a silly, silly, absolute foolish decision to go over there," she said.

Poor wording on my part. The "Muslim community" expressed shock that he left. The friends didn't condem him.. I wonder if these friends are Muslim...
 
What difference does it make?

What's really foolish about this kid is that he'll probably not be allowed back into Australia (from what I understand) if he even survives this clusterfuck bloodbath.
Sydney Muslim community leader, Jamal Rifi, used his contacts in Lebanon, where his brother is justice minister, to try and find Elmir and his 16-year-old friend when they originally left Australia.

Mr Rifi said today's video is distressing.

"What I saw today made me very upset with a heavy heart because that was a death sentence for this boy," he told 7.30.

"[It] also sent all the wrong messages to his family; I really feel for them, because today they probably have realised that he'll no longer be able to come back to Australia."

Instead of water it will be thousands of tonnes of explosives doing God's bidding. Lets see who win's this, maybe Mohammed will save them, maybe if they scream Allah Akbar enough and slit a goats throat Allah will rise from the heavens and smash the Christian world with all his might and let them continue in their utopia of rape, Sharia law, and beheadings.

    Wake up to the facts. This is the hour of destiny as marked by the heavens. September 10th 1999 I didn't have to wait in line for 2 hours before a flight, didn't have to worry when some guy with a turban gets on my bus or my train, didn't have to think when I'm in a crowd that someone will set off a bomb randomly. Liberals have the gall to say we cause this, well it happen even before we go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan. They want us to stop occupaying those countries, well how many bases do we still have in italy and Germany? We are still occupying those countries yet we don't have their citizens indiscriminately killing our people. Fuck this, grow a pair of balls and be prepared to take up arms so our children don't have to put up with this shit. If we don't settle this now we will be remembered as the generation that sat around taking selfies and watching the Kardashians while the Caliphate was restablished and the Western way of life as we were took so for granted comes crashing down around us.
 
That sounds like a speech a politician might give to ramp up war efforts. Stop indiscriminately blowing up their homes and families and take all that money from war efforts and put it into the security of our nation. Will there still be pissed off Islamists?Probably. Will there be as many of them? probably not.

I'd do the same thing for gun control because, speaking of stupidity, guns are responsible for orders of magnitude more terror in America than Islamists.
