I thought it might be interesting to ask Aussie BL's about the various plant species they cultivate for their narcotic value. There are plenty of comments elsewhere about consumption and effects but few dealing with the production elements so many end-users have no clue about. Cannabis, cactii, fungii, innocuous (or not) nursery lines and old-world varieties, species from which mind-altering substances are derived... people grow them because they make them happy in so many ways :D. But all is not beer and skittles in growland. Problems arise that aren't always easily recovered from the literature and which may be addressed more directly through a forum such as this.

I think it is important to keep the thread in ADD section as our climate, cultural conditions and the availability of many plant species (or the lack thereof) is unique to our situation. Comments from OS posters are most welcome and may lead to enhancing the quality of the local efforts, but its the Aussie experience I'm most interested in reading. We have a relatively small but thriving community of growers in this country who isolate themselves by neccesity and who may not have much chance to interact with like-minded individuals about what they know or do. I hope this thread brings a few out into the light, if briefly.

What do you grow? Cultural requirements? Problems you've encountered/overcome? Propagation practices? Harvesting and storage? Pics, if you have some? Reasons why you DIY instead of buying? Quality control? More...

(Mods, feel free to PM me if this is a lame idea or just too risky to pursue for HR reasons).

Cheers. Losthippy

I definitely think this could be a really interesting thread, I love gardening and horticulture so this thread definitely holds appeal to me.

It seems pretty risky though - I think it's important not to talk about any current grows or be self incriminating in any way - perhaps photos are not the best idea.

We've had cultivation discussion before so I'll leave this open and have a discussion with the other mods about what's best :)

I haven't bothered to check the current legal status, but our national plant, as well as hundreds of others are completely banned due to having trace elements of DMT in them. Almost all gardens with an Australian native plant in them are illegal these days. Fuck the government of Australia, fuck the war on drugs which is a war on people (relevant article to this claim http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/3857294.html) and fuck the world.

The whole fucking world needs to be cleansed of the human virus, here's hoping for a comet that Bruce Willis can't save us from.

I don't grow anything but nearby there's an infestation of what looks like Morning Glory. I wonder if I should get some of its seeds.

i love growing papaver somniferum - opium poppies.
they're really beautiful plants, from the big cabbage-like leaves, to the flowers, and finally the pods. very beautiful in each stage, then they are ready to harvest. spring time = opium tea.

Thanks for the nod, footscrazy. I would hope posters use a bit of common sense and don't self-incriminate, but I reckon there shouldn't be much of an issue with pics, especially in a thread like this. I've seen a few in various other threads. On the issue of banned plants, it's clear that such an imbicilic idea is in essence, unworkable and at best would be difficult to enforce. Half the gardening grannies across the country could be arrested for what they harbor in their gardens without even knowing it. In any case, once one digs around a bit an impressive list of plants with desirable qualities can be found and I'm sure there will be some interesting stories related by growers with experience in their cultivation and use. All I would add is that HR shouldn't take a backseat to experiments with unfamiliar plants for the sake of mind-altering experience. Things go wrong, and ignorance is no excuse.

I see illegal plants every now and then in people's front lawns, I'd say 95% don't even know.
I'd add my illegal garden but I don't have on unfortunately, I'm very interested in other people's gardens though.
I know there's a lot of people on Shaman Australis who have some interesting plants.

^ yeah, i'm very jealous of some of the plants those people have. especially the cacti.
i live in a one bedroom apartment, so i've had a fairly limited ability to grow stuff in the last couple of years. used to have some san pedro cacti, would love to get a couple more.
i guess for people in my situation, living in the city with no yard to speak of, poppies are still a possibility - i'm a cheeky guerilla gardener and in a month or two i'll be walking around slinging poppy seeds all over the place.
it's a shame you can't do that with pot...but as jaurk says, there are quite a few plants that people are oblivious to. strangely enough, opium poppies seem to be one of them for ~75% of people.

i have a few cacti's growing in my front garden.

dont really know if they are mesculine containing varietys or not though.

they just look cool and really easy to maintain

water it every so often etc.

^they do look cool. so many cacti look trippy, like fractals or something. i also love growing them, active or not.

I wonder what the implications would be if you riddled your suburban house's front yard with several opium poppies. It'd be funny, regardless.

I've got a massive backyard...and I have a good sized vegetable garden to make use of the space.

In the past I've done papaver somniferum. Found it to be a really enjoyable and rewarding experience :) the growing bit was almost as fun as enjoying the end results.

Growing cannabis I've never bothered with...too risky I think. They look so suspicious. With poppies, you can make them look like a nice flower garden. I did just remember - when living at my parents house I tried to do a few plants, Mum busted me and made me destroy them though :\ - not a good idea to grow illegal things at your parents place anyway.

Not illegal but I keep chickens as well. Get heaps of eggs, and I've grown to appreciate them as pets. They all have distinct personalities, and they are almost a bit like small dinosaurs (if you were a small bug, they are pretty much t-rex) I'm a bit of a softie when it comes to animals and have taken in injured birds a few times in the past...have currently got a magpie who has a broken wing, and he is a legend. Magpies are crazy smart, and very playful...'squawky' gets along awesome with my dog, and when I throw a stick they both go for it. Going to have and try and reintegrate him into his flock soon and I'll miss him :(

I think it's very rare for someone to catch onto. But here's what could happen -

Man turns Safeway seeds to opium

November 8 2002
By Steve Butcher

Homegrown opium poppies.

A Victorian judge was shocked yesterday at how a drug addict was able to grow 230 opium poppies at home from seeds bought from the herbs section of a supermarket.

Judge James Duggan was told it was possible that Ronald Mark Fiddes had bought untreated imported poppy seeds that produced the prohibited plants.

Prosecutor Chris Ryan confirmed it was possible for someone to grow opium plants from untreated overseas seeds, whereas all poppy seeds grown in Australia were treated.

The County Court heard that police found two crops weighing a total of 37 kilograms in the front and back yard of Fiddes' Lower Plenty unit on November 20, 2001.

Mr Ryan said the capsules of some plants showed evidence of scoring from a sharp blade that meant the opium sap or resin had been harvested.

Morphine formed about 1 to 3 per cent of the resin while Fiddes' crop would have produced a quantity of opium about half the size of a cricket ball, he said.

It was accepted, he said, that Fiddes had not trafficked the opium and had grown it for personal use.

Joe Toal, defending, said Fiddes, 40, had been "totally soaked" in drugs, mostly heroin, morphine or methadone, for about 20 years.

Fiddes had been a methadone addict for 10 years from 1989 before he decided to get off it and start working as a labourer. After a serious back injury, he unsuccessfully applied to legally obtain morphine for pain relief. Then he had been told about growing poppies for opium.

"He wanted to keep to himself and not bother anyone and try and create a situation that was physically tolerable for him," Mr Toal said.

So Fiddes went to a Safeway store, selected two bags of poppy seeds from the herbs section, planted them, and "they took off", he said.

Judge Duggan said he found such a scenario "mind-boggling".

Fiddes got between 10 and 12 fingernail-sized balls of opium, which he swallowed with water, that helped with his morphine addiction and pain control.

Fiddes, an industrial spray painter, of Main Road, Lower Plenty, pleaded guilty to cultivating a narcotic plant and to possessing marijuana.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Duggan said he was surprised that Fiddes had been able to "plant an illegal crop so simply". He jailed Fiddes for two years with one year suspended for 24 months.

It's a bit frightening...

Some guys planted Poppies on a police station in Victoria, I can't find the article though.
There's gardens near me with Morning Glory, Passion Flower, lots of cacti but very rare trichocereus cacti, I've seen occasionally poppies (They're fucking gorgeous!) and a whole host of other things.

Personally I'm a terrible gardener and don't have a lawn :x
Maybe one day I'll grow something after I start my legal herb garden that I've been readying for.

I grow San Pedro, i tried to cultivate Khat but it's just too hard with Victoria's temperatures unless i did it hydroponically which i don't have the time to do.

As far as i'm aware, San Pedro are legal as long as the mescaline is extracted.

that's awesome man! i reckon poppies would love a bit of chook manure :)

I'll try to hunt down some of my outdoor grows tomorrow :)

Im quite new to indoor growing but have alot of experience growing outdoors. 4 out of the 6 plants i grew indoors where successful,I planted 3 sativa dominant seeds and 3 Green-o-matic feminized auto flower seeds. Was amazed at the rate of growth with the auto flowering seeds (from seed to harvest in 55 days!) and they were all successful 1 of my sativas were successful the other 2 went male as soon as i turned down the light to 12/12.spewin i dont think i took any photos of the green-o-matic.They where all under a 600wt HPS (wait up they started off under a CLF with a UV blocker.Thought it was a metal halide fucking derrrrrrrp!) got some cardboard n bent it around so it was totally around my plants then covered it in tin foil my light came with a reflector and the parts the reflector couldn't reach i covered in foil.
Theres 1 problem i need help with every grow indoors i do theres these tiny ass little black bugs (midges i think) that seem to live and breed in the soil.I've tried a few types of pyrethrins and even tabcoo stem in a dish of water.
I have found 1 way to sorrta fix the bug problem n thats by hanging these anti mossie things that have a really strong smell only thing is don't know if the mossie things will hurt my plants. The bugs don't seem to do much damage to the plant ( i think) but there REALLY fucking annoying when im playin with my plants or watering ect ect these bugs fly up n i tend to inhale some lol not much fun.Any tips would be great cheers ma negros :)
