i need more sleep dammit

I can't go to sleep at a proper time EVER!, its 3:43 am now and i am up typing, i do this every damn night, and then i wake up and am tired, i feel like shit, and then do the same thing again, EVERY NIGHT, i procrastinate with all my work and never do it, I say, oh i'll do it later tonigh, but don't dammit, anyways this is relavent to my health due to the fact that I always feel like shit due to this sleep/work schedule, anyone got any recommendation??? I NEED THE SLEEP but whenever i try to I feel restless and unable to, i feel as if i am missing something, i hope this makes sense as it is driving me insane!

heh, sounds JUST like me.

suggestions: stuff you probably heard 5238759324 times - go to the gym, eat, blah blah. does it work? not for everybody, and not if you have a real sleeping problem.
other than that, not everybody a) wants to gain weight b) has time for 2-3h of workout every day before bed

my suggestion: go see a neurologist, eventually get something prescribed. benzos work like magic, but they are a creation straight from hell too. ambien didn't work, but that's just me. good luck

With the help of a neurologist I rotate through ambien and xanax. I still don't sleep all night every night, but I get about 6 hours a night now average instead of none to 3. Xanax works better than ambien, but ambien has less side effects (if you go to bed)

Ambien is a good drug.
Still, I'd suggest, first, trying to go to sleep at different times...start taking naps.
Try getting up at or before sunrise...
Go to sleep at a different time the next night...
If you're still having trouble,
try finding a supplement named "Alluna."
It is a very "clean" sleep supplement, whereas with Ambien there are some amnesiatic effects...
By the way, Alluna is a mixture of Valerian properties and Hops.

Health Q and A is only for discussion of health issues relating to recreational drug use.

I'll move this to Life. :)

Sounds just like me too. I love the night and will stay up until the sun starts to rise if I have nothing to get up for the next day. Whenever I drink I seem to get up real early (its 8 am I just woke up ahhh! :)). Throw some early classes in there and you've got one messed up sleep schedule.

I would set your alarm to get up at most 8 hours after you go to bed no matter what first off. Don't lay in bed after you wake up for more than a half an hour unless you're hung over. If you're staying up way too late, set your alarm and force yourself to get out of bed early.

For the lack of energy, exercise. This has helped me greatly. You'll need less sleep among many other benefits. Don't do it right before you go to sleep, do it 4-6 hours before. Do exercises you enjoy, you're not out to become a marathon runner or a professional body builder.

Also, eat well stay away from crap food. You don't have to become a vegan, you can mix it up half and half like I do. I'll maybe have a couple hotdogs and some vegetables. Focus on vegetables, they fill you up with minimal calories.

I wouldn't recommed taking drugs for it, although I have no experience with the ones mentioned above or any at all for that matter. But, I'm assuming that those are only a short term solution, maybe they would be good for nights when you are rediculously wired here and there. It seems there are more natural solutions, I'd stick to those. :)

Oh my god this sounds a bit like me hehe. Okay...I work nightshift from about 7pm to 5am though only 3-4 times a week. I stay up til the damn sun is up and sleep til about 1-3pm whatever day it is. If I have someting to do the next day i have to force myself to wake up but alot of the time i hit the SNOOZE button for hours ~lol~.

I can sleep up to 12 hours a day no problem and I hate waking up before 12 midday whatever day it is - ALWAYS HAVE! This has been a prolem for years lol. Only the last 2 weeks have i been a little better. Prpbably will go to sleep about 4:30 this morning....

Try to keep your self up for like an all nighter or something and on the next day, particualry when you have a day off sleep what you need to sleep that night at a "Normal" time for the schedule you have and when you wake up at the "normal" time in the morning you'll be ok, not fully rested since your body hasn't "recovered" the lost sleep. This worked real well for me when I noticed that I was sleeping a very peculiar sleep schedule.

I've battled with sleeping for most of my life...i've tried all sorts of natural remedies as well as prescribed drugs, (which just made me feel really weird during the day)...

What i've started doing now, is getting into bed and reading until my eyes start closing by themselves and i can't read anymore...and most importantly not worrying about whether i'm awake too late or even thinking about getting to sleep and touch wood, i haven't had a problem getting to sleep for a while...

It usually still takes an hour or so...but at least i'm not tossing and turning and stressing about it all night...

Don't know if it will help you...but it's worth a try! :)

Good luck!!

Insomnia is a pain I know all too well - I've held off so long seeing a doctor about medication, but in might be my only solution :(

Well after struggling with this for some time and suspecting thats its causing all my anxeity and panic attacks - I've bit the bullet and seen a doctor about it - I've been prescribed Stilnox.

I didn't want to go down this road, but I'm at my wits end at the momment.

Insomnia advice

I have no idea where this thread belongs so I'll give it a try here...

I've been having serious problems with insomnia this year (not related to drug use) and was wondering if anyone could recommend anything? I've tried a variety of over the counter stuff like gravol, NyQuill, various cough syrups... which tend to work for a couple of days, but then my insomnia over powers it. I tried a sleeping pill once and it didn't actually work... I just felt craked out.

Anyway, if anyone could recommend ways to deal with insomnia or a good sleeping pill, i'd be most appreciative. At least once a week I go to school without sleeping and its very painful!

I was struggling with insomnia myself not long ago but I seem to have gotten over it for the most part.

The first thing I did was see my doctor and after a chat he precribed Stilnox to me, which is a rather mild sleeping pill. This was able to get me into a sleeping pattern that I was missing. I don't like taking drugs if I don't have to, so my next step was to follow my doctors further advice. He advised me to exercise every night, even just a 20 minute walk after work - it would burn up all my energy and leave me in a tired state later on (you can judge yourself how much exercise you need). He then suggested that at a certain time every nite that I refrain from for mentaly challenging tasks and focus on some relaxing activities - such as an easy going movie or a good novel with a nice glass of wine or whiskey ;) (yup, he suggested the wine =D)

My problem is that I have an over active mind and I was finding that my late nite NET sessions were continue to stimulate my mind - I've taken this equation out of the picture and applied the above. I've found that this has made a huge difference and I don't require anymore sleeping tablets. The last thing I wanted was to become dependant on the.

Anyway, some food for thought :)

Try valerian, either the root or the processed pill form. Although the pill tastes like ass, and I have no idea about the root.

And get more exercise.

I've always struggled to get to sleep, although over the past month or so it's been particularly bad. I find if there's no reason for me to wake up early, then I just keep staying up later and later - at the moment I'm having trouble getting to sleep before 6 am. Is this the same as insomnia? Once I'm asleep I'm like a log, but I really can't get to bed unless I'm exhausted.

I'd prefer not to be reliant on medication though, so maybe I might take up haste's doctor's advice and do some more exercise at night :) I'm always on the computer late at night too so I should probably lay off it a little and do something mind numbing before bed.

that's cool advise haste - i suffer from this a bit too

i guess just do all you can during the day (mental and physical) before 2 or 3 hours before you go to bed and then you'll fall alseep quick later :)

Heres a few tips that help you get into better sleeping patterns

1. Don't use your bed for anything but sleeping(i know this can be tough)
If you only use your bed for sleeping, and not watchin TV, reading,
hanging out, your mind will associate it more with sleep and not other
activities(well one other fun one comes to mind, but I think that helps
you Sleep ;) )

2. If you spend more than 15-20 mins awake in bed, get up and do
something else for a little while(watch TV, read, anything not to
stimulating) then when you feel tired give it another shot. I know
This seems counter productive but think of all the time you spend awake
in bed when you cant sleep, theres nothing like some infomercials to
make your eye lids heavy

3. Exercise during the day/evening, I know its been said before but I'm
repeating it because it really helps

4. Avoid Coffee/stimulents after 2pm, they can keep you from sleeping
way after the effects wear off

Well I hope these tips help alittle, I suffer from bouts of insomnia as well and sometimes nothing really helps, but i've found these tips can get you into better sleep patterns/habits that might shorten the bouts.
