The Home Remedies Thread!

oh and what I found to work the best for beestings is to cover the stung area in a handful of good wet mud...dunno why but it works like a charm

For hiccups take a glass of water and hold it in front of your face. Put your lips on the opposite side of the glass so your chin is almost in the glass. Bend at the waist and drink the water upside down , take 5-10 sips in a row and the hiccups are gone.

Trust me this works, I get those opiate hiccups all the time and this has never failed me. Looks silly to do but who cares? Hiccups suck.

Ghetto air freshener: put a bounce sheet on the back of a fan , turn the fan on and the sheet gets sucked to back and the fragrance blows into the room. If you're really ghetto you can use a piece of cloth soaked in any soapy or otherwise scented water and wring it out , then use it the same way. Even a piece of paper sprayed with cologne or room spray will work.

A drop of cologne dabbed on a light bulb scents the room too.

The dryer sheet on the fan is an awesome idea! I am going to try it tonight. I love the smell of my dryer sheets and I am always washing my blankets so it keeps my house smelling like them! The "Fresh Linen" air freshners just don't smell as great as a dryer sheet. Awesome!

Check out a TV series currently running on the BBC (episodes available on i-player), 'Grow your Own Drugs': http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00j4j41

All about growing and collecting plants and herbs and how you can prepare them and produce lotions and potions - in fact, there was a cure for dry coughs in this week's episode :)

Tea- not just good for drinking! Right after you get out of the shower, if you rinse your hair in tea (it can be pretty weak tea, I usually use one tea bag in two cups of water) it will make your hair super soft. Also, if you dye your hair, it can keep the color from fading a little longer, or if you are a natural blonde like me, which can be hard to maintain a nice color sometimes, it keeps your color a little brighter, you just have to make sure to use a tea thats a similar color to your hair. I use camomile. There are so many different kinds of teas that you can always find one that will suit your hair color.

thank you to both of you!
i called my mom up and she said that warm milk and honey should do the trick
It actually soothed it for a bit and put me to sleep which was nice, but my throat and chest are still killing me!

ergg
=/
i hate being sick

^^I usually take a tablespoon or two of honey, but that seems to only mask the problem. Honestly VICKS VAPOR RUB works best for me :\

Thizzer-- My suggestion wasnt actually for a cough, sorry, but I do have one that I can give you! However I've never tried it so I have no idea if it works or not, but a shot of alcohol of some kind, whiskey, bourbon, anything like that, is supposed to work pretty well for getting rid of a cold, which it sounds like you are getting.

Dryer sheets are also great for de-frizzing staticy hair and for polishing stainless steel faucets.

^ Brandy is best...a few sips of warmed up brandy soothes my sore aching throat and relaxes me whenever I feel a huge sore throat coming on...and I gargle with warm water and sea salt AND extra strength mouthwash to get rid of all those germs! (maybe a placebo effect, but it does help me feel much better).

^There's no reason that would be a placebo. The mouthwash kills germs, the warm water helps to sooth the throat, I'm not exactly sure what salt water does but I've always been told that thats what you're supposed to gargle for a sore throat. I never thought of mixing them all together, but it sounds like a winning combo to me :) Good tip!

Heres one i live by.

If you've got a cold have a few whiskeys then get in bed with lots of clothes/blankets on and sweat it out. Works a treat.

So i was going through this general knowledge book and stumbled upon a full page of kitchen home remedies!

Here are a few of my personal favorites:

To clean a cutting board, sprinkle it with salt, then rub it with a slice of lemon.

Eliminate coffee or tea stains in mugs by filling them with an equal mixture of table salt an vinegar
