The Home Remedies Thread!

These are all "natural" remedies that I have around my house, but not sure if they really count as home remedies....

Echinacea/Zinc/Glutamine when you start to get sick....works miracles to boost you immune system.

Melatonin for insomnia/sleeping problems

Crazy glue for cuts

Epsom salt for aches, pains, muscle soreness, sprains, and bruises

Nailpolish for chigger bits

Cucumbers/Egg yolks for your eyes to decrease wrinkles

Put the end of a hot stick in a fire and then apply the hot tip to a tickbite to get the tick to release his grip on your skin and then pull it out.

Whenever I had an ear ache my mom would always put olive oil on a spoon and heat it up over the stove, just until it was warm/hot. Then dip your finger in the oil and put it right in the little indent behind your ear. I don't know why this helps but it does! Takes the pain right away. %)

I forgot about that one! I thought you were supposed to actually put it into the ear canal though...Also I heard that one drop of white alcohol (like vodka :)) and then hot oil is what clears up any ear problems.

what kind of oil? like Olive oil or Vegetable oil?

Oh really? I dunno... my Mom always put it on that little nook indentation right behind the bottom of your ear lobe and kind of rubbed it in for a second. It would probably work better inside the ear ;)

BTW: Love... how are you feeling?!?!

For colds , put Vicks rub on the feet and cover with wool socks. It draws the cold out of you and warms you up , very soothing especially for kids.

For warts or boils, cut an onion and rub it on the wart then bury the onion in the ground. As the onion rots the wart or boil also disappears.

For a headache on one side of the head, squeeze the opposite wrist and it will go away.

Before growing a moustache , shave daily for a month to coax the hair to grow in thicker.

These might be old wive's tales but I believe there is some truth to them.

For arm pit stains in white T-Shirts, wash them alone with nothing else, and drop in 1 table of ASPRIN.. with of course laundry detergent... totally takes away the yellow-ness. Awesome stuff!

I tend to get ear aches once a year lol so I'll try your method next time to check it out

I learned this a really long time ago but then forgot about it. A few years ago my aunt came up to me and told me I told her to do this and she always does it for headaches and it really works for her. I always forget :\

what happens if you wash other clothes with the asprin? Too bad i just threw out a bunch of expired aspirin i bet that would have worked! Do you think it would work for dirt-stained socks? Bleach has not been helping with those :\

Awww LA... I can't wait until I'm in your situation! I'm sorry that you aren't feeling so great but I can only imagine the reward! I bet look you look so AMAZINGLY beautiful my dear! So pretty :)

I only use it with white t-shirts with arm pit stains... I never tried it with other clothes. I don't see why it wouldn't work on socks! But it might be that what ever chemical mixes with the sweat and deoderant to cause the stain, the asprin might react with it to lift only that stain. I'm not really sure, but just throw a couple socks in with it... couldn't hurt it. Did you ever try like the OxyBooster? I'm gunna look up something that can work for you :)

Bleach- For first wash
Then rewash using Laundry Detergent, 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of baking soda
^^ Acutally I've heard that one before but I've personally never have done it before. Sounds like it would work though!

if your get stung by a bee/wasp and your around someone who has chewing tobacco/dip in, have the juice spit on it. it takes the sting away immediatly. i promise it works.

^^I heard putting a slice of raw onion on the sting and that will elimate itching/redness, etc

Whenever you feel a sneeze coming on, firmly pinch the bridge on your lips just under your nose for a few seconds to stop.

Saw this in Dear Abby once, and by God, it really works...

Ginger is like, king shit for many things, like the well-noted nausea, but also is good for improving circulation (good for keeping warm) can reduce gas, helps a person digest food (it contains zingibain, a strong protease enzyme) and is good for relieving menstrual cramps and sinus congestion. It also has some fairly strong anti-inflammatory properties, and so makes a good adjunct to the often nausea-inducing anti-inflammatory naproxen in people with arthritis.

Things that work for bloating and indigestion are cardamom and cumin, in fact many aromatic spices have the ability of stimulating digestion and relieving gas. But cumin is one of the best I've seen for gas.

And Turmeric is a really excellent natural antibiotic. Someone even attempted to patent it for this property at one time, but this was fought, as it was not an original discovery but traditional knowledge. BOO ON PLANT PATENTS!! A paste of it works good on sores and burns and things prone to infections, as long as they're in a spot where it doesn't matter if your skin look all yellow.

And for dry and itchy skin, the best thing is olive oil. Olive oil rubbed into skin has this way of letting moisture in without letting it out, and I have yet to run into a commercial product that works the same way olive oil does.

^Almond and jojoba oils too......
People at my husbands old work thought he was a little crazy when he said he uses olive oil as a moisturizer for his face- but we use it and love it.......they just didn't know what they were missing out on!;)

Have you tried those ginger people candies??

apple cider vinegar for minor burns and sunburn is just amazing...
apple cider vinegar is shit for sunburns, in my experience. i was fried to hell a year or so ago, and didn't want to miss work, and while looking for online remedies.....i decided i would do spots so i knew what was a success and what wasn't. end result, my good old fashioned aloe plant worked lovely, the vinegar, the preparation H (yes, that was a suggestion too) worked awfully.

for skin issues, i suggest tea tree oil, it is a great all encompassing skin treatment.

Yeah! I forgot about those. If you make a soap with a palm or coconut base (for hardness) and jojoba and/or olive oil and leave a portion of the oils un-saponified, it's really damn good for the skin. It's called superfatting. Shea butter is a nice semi-hard fat to use in soap too, that's pretty nice on skin, and so is cocoa butter.

Double yeah! Tea tree oil is super good. Between tea tree oil and neem, you have about one third of all a person needs for their skin and hair. Both smell pretty strange though. But that's okay because so do I.

all apologies if this remedy has been posted n I missed it.
anyway,
arnica gel or ointment will help bruises go away faster. I had surgery 4 years ago and started taking arnica pills 2 weeks before surgery and used the gel on the incision. it def helped with swelling and bruising. i've used it a lot for bruises and it makes them fade faster.
