The gun thread, reloaded.

9% is "strikingly close" to 28%? I would personally say that difference is statistically significant.

You should pay attention to the word "fraction" and read more closely. Black NFL players commit 54% less assaults than young black males in the general population. White NFL players commit 53% less assaults than young white males in the general population.

54% is strikingly similar to 53%, especially considering the sample size.

Next time, I would suggest carefully reading and making sure you understand a study before you post it to support your beliefs.

If you know enough about statistics to know what "statistically significant" means, you know enough to see that this statement provides insufficient information to assess statistical significance.

Read the article again, 28% of Black NFL players arrested, 9% of White NFL players arrested.

Your statistic might be true as well, it's definitely not as telling as this one and clowds the facts. Even given higher levels of income, there is a large difference in crime rates between the two races, whereas previously you said socio-economic factors explained this.

My statistic is applying basic math to the numbers given in the source, in order to understand why they are calling the fractions "strikingly similar". The fractions are strikingly similar.

Now you may disagree with that, but you're the one who referenced that source in the first place. Don't get mad at me just because you grabbed the first reference you thought supported your bias, without fully reading it or understanding what it said. That's your mistake, and one that's quite blatantly obvious. Perhaps you'll learn a lesson from it.

As for the socio-economic factors, I already covered that.

Your source backed up my assertion of socioeconomic factors in crime. Rich people are less likely to commit violence. Your source shows that. When compared to a similar demographic group, rich black NFL players and rich white NFL players both commit about half the assaults as a similar respective demographic.

Higher rates of assault among black players can similarly be explained in my previous post, referenced above.

You may want to read the damn paper - it's online.

I'll quote: "We find two striking observations. First, we note that the NFL rates are less than half the general population rates for both whites and blacks. Second, we find that the NFL fraction is strikingly close for the two racial groups. Thus, even though our initial assessment was that the NFL rates looked very high, we find them well below the rates for the general population."

This group of richer people have lower rates of assault, even though they are rich due to a sport which basically awards and glorifies physical aggression.

You're also ignoring other factors which lead to physical violence, especially domestic violence, and that's a family history of violence. Domestic violence correlates with poverty - which means you need to take the background of these players into effect to draw a meaningful conclusion.

Lol =D
