The Elephant in the Room (Or, Lady GaGa)

no, not really. I'm sorry if you don't agree but I think anyone with a scintilla of the ability to be a judge of character can see through her transparent image

i don't even know if she really is bisexual, i don't think you can put too much stock into anything this stupid constructed bitch says, but regardless i doubt that's fueling her to make cringe-worthy speeches about the movement. she is an image-monger that loves money and that to me is obviously her prime motivation for all of her little publicity stunts

Can't stand most of her music, however the piano version of Poker Face is pretty lovely. As much as I hate the type of music she does I can't hate her for wanting to make those millions instead of being a broke pianist. Makes me wonder how many other famous pop stars are actually incredibly talented musicians who would rather be rich than make real music but no money.

Favourite song on the new album : Bloody Mary.

Probably the best, in this album full of religious themed songs. Tons of wacky reverb on her voice, down tuned bass choir voices, slow syrupy beat, with lyrics in english, french, and italian. It's like i'm on purple drank at a disco.

Just watched the video for "Born This Way."

I am impressed - and NOT because the whole thing is so explicitly and textbook-queer (I admit, I can't wait for my father - a fan - to hear this. I'll make sure to get him singing along, "don't be a drag, just be a queen").

Gaga is doing what any other successful pop singer in her right mind would have considered unthinkable. She clearly knows what she's doing, and is willing to put her future/prosperity at stake for it. And YET, she is succeeding MAGNIFICENTLY - being funded, etc. No word describes this better than "magic" (thaumaturgy). I respect that.

To the poster who asked how she appeals to my queer side: it has nothing to do with the dresses. It is about the fact that she is bringing to the mainstream something that no one dared to. She is an incarnation of queer theory*, regardless of whether we find her aesthetics pleasing or not. She is the kind of person you write university essays about, rather than product-reviews.

Btw, she is probably neither gay not bisexual. If you're still thinking along these lines, you've missed only the whole point :)

At the very, very least, she writes her own music, which is alone a virtue rare amongst pop artists.

* To clarify: she is using pop - the mainstream of mainstream - to undo the status-quo and show it for what it really is. This, to me, is queer-theory in a nutshell (socially-constructed identity undone by self-deconstruction - shit, that's a mouthful!). How she looks while she does it is irrelevant. The girl is clearly very intelligent and a prolific artist, regardless of whether her art appeals to us on the surface or not.

There's something fascinating about her, she's not mediocre by any stretch, anyone who says so is less discerning than they'd like to think.
I'd like to give her some DMT, if she hasn't had some already, to see what kind of music she's really capable of.
I'd definitely love to collaborate with her some day. (yeah keep dreamin...hah!) And craft a Super Electro-Drum and Bass-RhythmnBlues-Funk Odyssey concept album with ridiculous, Assimovian, story lines. She wouldn't regret it.

But Born This Way's not too bad....
I like the fact that she's in touch with her fans. She gave em all food and coffee when they were standing outside Saturday Night Live waiting to get tickets. That's pretty cool. She's a cool girl. Of course any girl that gives me coffee is automatically on the top of my list ;)

If we're talking pure musicianship here then her piano playing isn't all that extraordinary. She's not a "classical pianist", or at least I've never seen anything by her that would indicate she's anything more than just a regular pop pianist.
Look at this video:

Now that's obviously not Lady Gaga, but that obviously IS some real classical piano.

Are there any examples of Gaga playing something like this? I'd sure like to hear it, but I haven't yet.

She was pretty funny on SNL this past weekend. I'm still not a fan of her music but enjoyed her comedic chops. I was also impressed by her piano and vocal skills in the intro for the "Edge of Glory" but anytime she gets into the electronic dancy stuff it all goes downhill. She might actually be good if she learned how to produce decent sounding dance music. Also, her interview on "The View" got me a bit more interested in her muses, motives, and personality.

I went from thinking she was a manufactured pop weirdo to being interested in learning more about her and thinking she might have a shred of credibility.
