So you're scared that because of all of the financial woes currently hitting the World Economy,

That your money might only get you 80 percent of what it used to get you,

And with your wages stagnant, you're gonna be unhappy for the next few years?

Well, I say - fuck that!

Get rid of 90-plus percent of all of your unnecessary material things,

Stop buying unnecessary shit,

And go out there and,

Spend the bulk of your free time pursuing your passion,

Stop letting money control you,

And enjoy your fucking life!

Funny you should say that - I swear on my life, I debated ending the piece with:

"And, NO - I'm NOT rolling." :)

Thank you all for you kind words - and one of you in particular. :)

And, NO - I'm NOT rolling now either. :)

Wow. Wish I felt like I was champion or something. U R lucky.

Thanks for the "compliment," Control Denied.

Everyone else, thanks kindly for the genuine compliments.

And Control Denied, out of curiosity, what about the "poem," in your opinion, "sucks?"

I am being sincere and earnest in my question, and would honestly welcome any and all constructive criticism.

I don't fancy myself a "poet" per se.

I am a stand-up comedy writer (and performer) by trade and enjoy writing opinion pieces like this for fun.

So, please, if there's something I ought be doing that anyone thinks would improve this piece of writing (which, by the way, I didn't really intend as a poem - the line breaks are merely to help facilitate ease of reading - I tend to use line breaks frequently in all of my writing, my posts on Bluelight included (ESPECIALLY WITH MY JOKES - IN MY JOKE-WRITING, A LINE BREAK INDICATES AN EXTENDED PAUSE - SOMETHING THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE *IMPERATIVE* IN STAND-UP, AS MOST PEOPLE KNOW VERY WELL - PRECISE *TIMING* IS ONE OF THE HALLMARKS OF GOOD COMEDY).

Thanks for any feedback from anyone.

Peace,

LL

Some passions require money to pursue... and passions usually don't feed kids or pay rent.

You've got the right idea though. There's no need for excess.

I always get secretly kinda happy when they talk about the economy crashing. Like hey, my life wont change, since I never had money to begin with. lol

Dude? (Is that you?)

Your comment reminds me of Big Lebowski. The Dude wouldn't have any problem with the economy either.

yeh yeh, fair enough. im just sayin' is all.

im a poet. pooh to you. :)

carry on with the life-loving.

"Fair enough" to you, too, Control Denied. :)

For what it's worth, some of the compliments I have received that I hold most dear to my heart are the times after shows, when audience members (or better yet, comics ;)) would remark something to the effect of:

"I really liked that XYZ joke - the way it was worded was very poetic,"

as most of my stand-up consists of what most comics would describe as "cerebral one-liners" in which BREVITY is an absolute must (in my opinion).

With that said, and in all earnestness, I wish now that I had paid better attention during the few English classes that I actually "attended" throughout my writing-intensive academic career, so that now, I would actually know the first thing about constructing a formal poem.

Oh well, I guess I made a subconscious (or perhaps even conscious) decision way back then, to carry on with the life-loving. :)

And I'm quite happy with that decision. :)

Thanks for your quick and sincere reply, Control Denied.

And may YOU carry on with the poetry-writing. :)

It's one of those things that I'm not very good at doing, but that I greatly respect when I see others do it well.

Peace and Respect,

LL

I love stand up. Good on you for doing it. I've seen Dave Attell, Jim Gaffigan, Ian Bagg and Katt Williams and company this year. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is as good to me as stand up. I listen to it every night on the iPod. I can't fall asleep without it. I put on a whole season of Comedy Central stand up and fall asleep to it. I'm frikkin addicted.

You, "ugly," have absolutely NO idea how good reading this post just made me feel! :)

I've worked with three of the four comics you just mentioned, and all three of them are near-household names who pull in seven-figures a year, and have absolutely nothing to gain from associating with a mere fourth year (with an extended break to relocate home to New York) relative-beginner in this business, like me.

And yet two of them have REGULARLY given me advice, compliments and constructive help.

And on almost every single night, I see other celebrity or near-celebrity comics helping younger comics who are just starting out.

It really is a beautiful thing.

In the first several years in this industry, almost NO ONE makes enough money to survive on in a major city - for most of us, each week consists of a 40-50 hour day job like everybody else PLUS another 40-50 hours, or so, on writing, on editing, on performing, on handing out fliers (at the very beginning, just to get stage time!), on commuting, on networking, on supporting friends' shows, on studying the older great comics on youtube and on some other great websites, on running your own shows, on shameless self-promoting our respective product, on being absolutely AWED when we watch the modern greats like Attell and Giraldo in person, where they perform at some of North America's greatest venues like The Comedy Cellar FOR A MERE FIFTY BUCKS PER SPOT on the nights when they're not on the road pulling in up to *70 percent of the door* (HINT: THAT'S A LOT OF FUCKING MONEY PER SHOW! - I'M SURE THAT YOU CAN DO THE MATH!) JUST BECAUSE THEY FUCKING *LOVE* IT!

And yet that strong "we're just 5,000 human beings out of an American Population of over 300,000,000 who are choosing to invest a HUMONGOUS chunk of our time and our energy (KNOWING WE'RE BEING PAID DICK FOR *AT LEAST* 5 to 7 YEARS FOR EVEN THE *MOST* TALENTED COMICS), JUST BECAUSE WE LOVE IT *AND* SO THAT WE CAN BECOME BETTER AT IT - AND, of course, to a degree, in an effort to add value sheerly by making others laugh (and hopefully, in my opinion, THINK)" type of camaraderie, and all of the comments from comedy fans like you make it all worthwhile.

That and all of the pussy. ;)

I am unequivocally positive that I am speaking for every single one of the approximately 5,000 of us who are doing it full-time when I say:

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING LIVE COMEDY!

The supply of talented young comics, in my opinion, is BY FAR, at its highest as far of level of quality (youtube Anthony Jeselnik and Ted Alexandro for a taste of just how smart, original and funny some of the not-quite-yet-celebrity comics are) that it has been since I started following stand-up as a kid in the 70's.

So if you live in or near a major city OR college town, you should be able to see REALLY REALLY good quality stuff in person (and please trust me - neither TV nor the internet can so much as TOUCH the experience of seeing it live - at its best, it feels like you're at a great rock concert) for a VERY reasonable price.

If anyone has any questions about the business, or would like any pointers on starting out, please feel free to PM me.

I would be very happy to help.

And even if I wasn't happy to help, I owe it to great men like Mitch Hedberg and Dave Attell and Pat Dixon (if you haven't heard of him yet, I PROMISE YOU that you shall hear of him soon) and a host of other wonderful people who just happen to be great comics to "pay it forward."

At the risk of sounding preachy, my fellow Bluelighters - FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!

I swear on my life that it is my experience, my observation of others' experiences, and my strong opinion, that all of the time, sweat and toil spent shall be repaid in spades when you KNOW that you're doing what you're supposed to be doing with your life.

I promise that I never meant to post such a long follow-up in my own thread.

But then, again - I made this post for virtually the same reason I started this thread in the first place.

Peace, Love and ALWAYS LAUGHTER, Fellow Comedy Lovers,

L O V E

a coked-up, life-loving, manwhore Comedian. with all the knowledge of life in his head ready to spill out onto the crowd like jewel-encrusted vomit.

haha, no, im just jealous of you. i wish i could make money off of dark, obscure poetry. there's not much of a market for it at the moment. there was 200 years ago though.

Good Idea. Everyone my age should print this message and mail it to their kids in college with a note that they are not going to be able to pay next years college tuition because we should not have to work so hard.

Good Idea.

Everyone my age should print this message and mail it to their kids in college with a note that they are not going to be able to pay next years college tuition because we should not have to work so hard.

Doing something you love WITH PASSION, and which ADDS VALUE to the lives of others, in my opinion, is FAR more important than the amount of money in your bank account.

And why the fuck do you need your parents' money to pay your tuition bill?

Take out a low-interest loan that you can repay with relatively low interest over THIRTY YEARS.

Work and save money during the summers.

And spend those beautiful years, NOT ONLY ENJOYING THEM, NOT ONLY LEARNING - but on figuring out WHAT YOU WANT TO SPEND YOU VAST ARRAY OF TALENTS CONTRIBUTING.

And as luck might have, it, if you're reasonably talented, ambitious, hard-working, dependable, creative, honest, PERSISTENT, WITH ENTHUSIASM, and behave like a decent human being, it is my opinion that the likelihood of your ability to make a living DOING SOMETHING YOU ENJOY is better than most people imagine.

I fell for the trap myself, and I worshipped money for far too long.

Don't get me wrong - money IS a great thing.

But knowing that you're spending your life in the way that YOU KNOW you're SUPPOSED to be spending it is even greater.

Just my opinion.
