Yeah he was stupid but come on pedo's don't get that long for worse crimes, the imbalance appalls me. The justice system values property over people. Farking wrong, corrupt system

I thought the sentence was a tad excessive but unfortunately when it comes to drugs its russian roulette when it comes to the courts, plus he may have been used to set an example not to order/sell drugs through the mail or online, especially SR.

I've unapproved some off topic posts. Also, if anyone has a question for another poster, please pm them rather than posting it in a thread. Thanks.

Arrests so far have all been reverse engineered off typical investigative means. In Mr. Howard's case, there were a number of postal interceptions at the Port of Entry, which led to an intelligence based approach to catching him. The fact he used BTC is secondary, but sliding it in there provides another chance to intimidate the general public into not touching it.

Ordering your drugs off SR just removes the 'needing to stand on the street corner to make your connect' component. Police are still out to catch your connect, and Customs are reasonably good at what they do when it comes to micro scale importation.

Great article on a new book being written about the Silk road by Eiley Ormsby, the owner of http://allthingsvice.com/

Writing the end of prohibition: Eiley Ormsby talks about her new book, Silk Road and legalization

When browsing Silk Road’s forums, you’ll notice a particular address pop up again and again: allthingsvice.com.

Eiley Ormsby, the woman behind All Things Vice, is one of the most highly respected and frequently linked to journalists on the Road’s forums, a community understandably weary of journalists. At this point, it’s fair to say she’s an important member of the community herself. Over the past year, the Melbourne, Australia-based reporter has written about Silk Road in The Age and a number of different major Australian outlets. Recently, she landed a book deal that currently has her at work exploring the world of online black markets.

Ormsby is a former corporate lawyer turned freelance writer who earned her major break in 2012 writing features such as The drug’s in the mail, which introduced the mainstream Australian press to Silk Road, and Dancing With Molly, which argued for the legalization of ecstasy.

Rest of the article can, and should be read, over at http://weirderweb.com/

Yeah they do good articles on that site. That was an interesting read.

Hey mister, I copied and pasted a full article not that long ago (3 articles down on ww, on atlantis) from weirderweb and a BL user (which I gather is the person who runs weirderweb) posted on the thread asking if I could basically cut (edit) half the article out and put a note at the end saying - read the full article at - (the address) so that they can get the hits. I''m just mentioning it as I know they'd appreciate it, as they were pretty thankful when I did as they asked, they said they really need the clicks on their site. Up to you tho.

Everyone should check out the site tho, it has lots of great articles -

Totally understand mate, Ill edit some of it out to give people the incentive to go to http://weirderweb.com/ to finish reading the article and have a browse of the site.

Ill have to have a nosy and see who the owner is now. Cheers, Poledriver

im doing another interview, this time for channel 7, it will be on sometime early next week,

^^^ so your the idiot on the add giving an interview about ordering drugs from overseas and claiming that you resell it here for shitloads more without any annonymity at all?
I was just curious why you would go onto national mainstream media and spill your guts about importing drugs and reselling them? Do you like the idea of jail? Do you just like to rub in the fraction that you import drugs? Do you want for the LE agencies to get even more pissed off that they can't shut it down and start doing more "random mail crackdowns"? People use that website because they either don't have real world contacts or they are sick if buyin inferior adulterated and over priced drugs. That website actually provides a good service to the people that use it and you go and sell your story to a media program that re edits interviews and slanders people in the name of entertainment.
Let me guess, you got busted and have to pay legal fees so you decided to sell your story to them?
Wanker.

Mr Ibis was on one of these shows years ago concerning 4-MMC.

Yes it is on tonight. I was of two minds about contributing to TT... but I figured if they are going to do it anyway, it would probably be better with my input than without it. I'm not sure though until I see the final product! While I was happy with the interview as a whole, you just never know how you will be cut and edited with these things.

@Oldred3s I don't think it's news to the people that monitor these things (i.e. LE) that people are reselling on SR: I don't think this news item will change LE's plans. Of course much of all of this will be news to Today Tonight viewers. So, my concern is the capacity of the program to increase traffic to SR from new Australian users. We can see if that happens by monitoring the forums after tonight...

I spoke to the journalist before doing my interview about these concerns. She said that there's always a balance between publicising something and 'the community's right to know'. I think she was referring to the general community (read - parents) right to know that their children may be able to access drugs online. But of course it is also about informing drug users around the country about their capacity to access SR. There's a debate on SR forums about whether SR benefits from more publicity (more users = more demand = more supply = growing marketplace) or is worse off (more attention = more LE crackdowns). I think it is an open question.

I know that it's no longer a secret and that people will be monitoring it but on the add on telly they are interviewing a young looking person and the dude is admitting to importing and reselling drugs and he isn't even protecting his identity.
As I said, unless he has already been caught doing it and had his trial he is pretty stupid doing it.

Of course. But westy has already been convicted and claims to no longer be doing this. So he can talk openly about his time dealing.

I thought the story was relatively good, less sensationalist than I expected. And *basically* accurate. Apart from the line about me having completed my PhD on Silk Road. That would have been a really quick PhD ;) (For the record I did my PhD on drug discussions and communities online, way before SR existed.)

Yeah I figured that hahaha. I'm sitting on the fence about that story.
I'm sorry to have beat down on westy but I do have one problem with that report last night.
It was the way westy answered his questions. I guess to me it sounded like he was putting Silk Road at blame for making him a drug dealer and went and "dobbed in" the site. He said that he doesn't think he got busted through using the sight but rather from a tip off to police from neighbours due to the traffic coming through his house.
If this is the case then why give up your source? And why show people how to access the site? I understand that the story didn't delve into downloading and using TOR browsers but it did drop some bait to make other people more curious as to how to find these tools which in my mind is bad.
Maybe he told the authorities that he bought it online because its all anonymous and the dealers can't be arrested easily. In my mind that's the exact same thing as rolling on a real life dealer. He even admitted to ripping people off. You don't don in your source even if its online. You would of got off for personal use with 5 grams if you got raided, felt with in a magistrate and got a drug diversion but you told them you imported it yourself? Tsk tsk tsk. Just cos you get caught dealing you shouldn't put the blame for you dealing elsewhere.
If only they would have looked at the positive side more to the its rather than takin the "parents beware your kids could be importing drugs but if they aren't they will be after this report" track.

The first ever TV spot I did on SR (The Project, April 2012) put a more positive slant - they identified that maybe SR is an example of why prohibition just doesn't work, and also how people can reduce harms of drug purchasing by avoiding 'street market violence' by going online. But yes, most of the reports since haven't gone there at all.

I won't comment on westy's experience but I would say that any intelligent sellers that get busted in the current climate and don't want to roll their real-life dealer could easily just blame SR...

I see your point in that last paragraph, I don't mean to sound like I'm attacking anyone I was just writing how I saw his side of the story. It may have been how TT edited the story but it just seemed like he was putting blame on SR to why he was dealin and that after he got caught he made it out like he was trying to blame the website. No doubt that's how they edited it.
I'm still yet to see the projects report. I have been interested in seeing it but I just haven't had time to sit down and look for it. It also escapes my memory to do so most of the time.
I have a deep loathing for today tonight as well as ACA.
