The downsides of pot - What do you think?

3. Its safer than smoking cigarettes.

Actually, it has almost the exact same carcinogen profile as cigarettes.

"carcinogen profile" doesn't necessarily mean "cancer risk"

and i followed your link, where even NIDA admits:

"Marijuana smokers show dysregulated growth of epithelial cells in their lung tissue, which could lead to cancer; however, a recent case-controlled study found no positive associations between marijuana use and lung, upper respiratory, or upper digestive tract cancers. Thus, the link between marijuana smoking and these cancers remains unsubstantiated at this time."

here's the study they were referring to.

It makes me anti motivated and then theirs the issue of the POLICE! Seems like big brother is stepping up the crusade against mary jane. Thanks alot to the fucking Rockefellers.

It's so mild and non-toxic. That's the main danger in my view. Chances are high you'll substitute other things with the drug, because it doesn't hurt you. And then you're a lazy pothead all of a sudden (I'm not speaking from first hand experience, but I could imagine this happening to me).

it does turn you into a lazy pothead, IF you let it. If all you do from the minute you wake up to the minute you go to bed, your bound to feel burnt out and lazy lol i have had first hand experience of this.

There seems to be this conception surrounding marijuana that it isn't a "bad" drug like all the others, and pot smokers in particular get really indignant when medical professionals point out the downsides of the drug. This is largely because drug legislation has been co-opted by political factions.

Drugs are neither good nor bad - they are just objects. For example, morphine has relieved more suffering than any drug in the history of medicine, but for a heroin addict it causes problems. What is bad are the problems that people can develop with the drugs, not the drugs themselves.

Common myths about marijuana:
1. Its not addictive.

In fact, marijuana addiction is the number two most common addiction after alcohol in the clinic I work at.

2. Its a wonderdrug.

It certainly has its uses, but it is by no means a cure-all. Anxiety, one of the most common conditions it is prescribed for in California, is actually made worse long term with marijuana use.

3. Its safer than smoking cigarettes.

Actually, it has almost the exact same carcinogen profile as cigarettes.

4. It has no physical withdrawal.

Ask long-term smokers who have quit. Anxiety, depression, dysphoria, etc. Many smokers, after smoking a number of years, find that the positive effects of the drug disappear and instead cause intense dysphoria. These users often turn to other drugs, like opiates or benzos, in order to retain the ability to get high.

5. Its completely safe.

See above.

6. Its safer than other drugs because its "natural".

This is the stupidest argument of the bunch. Everything is made out of chemicals, from cocaine, to condoms. Whether it is grown in nature or in a lab is completely inconsequential.

Personally, I get no enjoyable euphoria from smoking pot, but my brother and dad love the stuff. Whatever the case, misuse or abuse of any drug can be harmful to individuals.

All true, or as some people say "quoted for truth".

Not only do many pot smokers tend to be indignant in the face of such truth, but they also tend to be quite selective about the information that they choose to remember from the numerous studies that have been done on the drug. There have been many studies which confirm that there are downsides to marijuana, but the majority of pot smokers choose to ignore those facts and only quote the portions from studies that supports their angle. I have seen people selectively quote information from studies to make it appear as though the study is basically saying "nothing wrong here!" when the study also lists negative outcomes of habitual marijuana use as any good, unbiased scientific report will do; they present both sides, but many people choose to outright ignore the bad parts, of course.

I also see a lot of people making the claim that weed is harmless, yet when someone provides a counterpoint those people insist on proof. Shouldn't both parties be required to prove their point if they want to go tit-for-tat?

Or they'll just use this type of catch-all excuse:

thanks, but your link for # 3 was put out by the NIDA ( i guess they dont have an agenda)

but in all Honestly most "science and research" about marijuana is usually biased either by the anti -pot people or the pro pot people.

"They must have had an agenda".

Anyone putting out a study with a crude agenda in a peer-reviewed medical journal would be laughed out of their careers posthaste and, if the study had a bias, it would be found out rather quickly.

I have attended an intensive outpatient program for persons dealing with drug addiction and a lot of those people had genuine problems stemming from their marijuana use. I have also sat in on enough NA meetings to know that the drug causes problems.

I can't smoke marijuana anymore now that I know I live with bipolar disorder. The only time I have ever smoked marijuana on a regular basis was last year. I smoked pot every night for a period of three months, and looking back now my pot use directly correlated with my entering a severe upswing of mania with psychosis, culminating in a total psychotic break from reality which resulted in me being committed to a mental hospital.

I have spoken with enough professionals in the field of psychology to know that marijuana played a major role in my worsening condition. It didn't cause me to be bipolar; I was born that way, but it most certainly made things far worse for me. Were I to pick up the habit again it would only result in me going manic again and, although the food at the hospital was delicious, I don't really want to be locked up in the nuthouse again.

This leads to what I consider one of the biggest risks involved in using pot: If you have a mental disorder such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, depression, general anxiety disorder or any form of anxiety disorder, smoking pot will cause your symptoms to be amplified and cause you a world of hell.

Most people believe that they won't be affected by this because they probably don't have a family history of mental illness. Well, guess what... I have NO family history of mental illness on either side of my family and BOOM, it fucked my shit up rather nicely and BAM, I find out I'm bipolar and that I was wandering around town thinking that I was the messiah.

So yes, there are a few downsides to pot.

weed fucks kids heads up, thats a fact, well in large regular amounts otherwise its almost harmless imo, thats coming from a lad who has chonged for over 9years and ive had the best times of my life stoned and the worst times not stoned, or suffering withdrawals, which does happen, dont let any hippies tell u otherwise, theyre just stoned.

When I was in rehab there was a total of 1 person who I ever saw for Marijuana and that was because his parents said he was getting kicked out of the house if he did not go.

I Highly doubt its the second highest drug for admittance to rehab for people going on their own will. That would all be court ordered/job ordered/parent ordered.

But yes marijuana does have downsides. Anxiety/Depression from Anxiety etc.

just because your brother is a dumbass doesnt mean there are downsides to marijuana.

ganja is good for you. kinda like how an orange is good for you because it has vit c, marijuana is good for you because it contains thc. the more in your daily diet the better

praise jah

That's not an accurate comparison because THC is not a nutrient.

its true for those of us with fragile psyches pot can become a major detriment to our life style. I go to a (very) good college, and i love to cook, read, and write with a passion. I usually read at least one novel a day, when im not stoned. When i get high the fantasy worlds that i can make in my head take control and i swing from uncontrollable mania (i am god, lord shiva... , to shattering fear (this is the day of my death, i have wasted my life...) While i do feel that i am a better person for these mental battles that wage inside me, they consume my whole world and i would miss a final or break a commitment with family with no qualms because i am on a whole other plain of reality. Even with all this i love pot, and envy those who can smoke it and not feel such tremendous, and demanding introspection. However i would only be lying to myself i tryed to keep up using it, smoked, vaped, eaten whatever it all effects me the same. So dont class me as hater, but maybe if you love pot and always have consider, that for others it doesnt treat them quite the same. and thats not to say a few year from now that i wont fall back in love with it, maybe when im done with school who knows... In case its relevant im 22, been smoking on and off sense i was 11. The heaviest years being from 17-22. In that time ive also played with cocaine, ecstasy, acid, shrooms, prescription amphetamines, alcohol, kava, kratom,
Now if i wana smoke and enjoy it i would need kava, kratom and alcohol, all not go get overly paranoid... so that my 25$ on the issue.

Here are some things I noticed among the college aged friends I know that smoke. I have been smoking for 3 years, but now I moderate myself. I know that I cannot speak for everyone because there are people who use it responsibly and have to suffer the stigma.

1. Pot does influence you to behave in a way that is sometimes callous, regrettable or rash. I see some reduction in self control.

I've witnessed friends buy products in stores that they regret later. I've seen friends make strange/rude remarks to other people. Once they were even provoking this random guy while we were stopped at a light. When they are sober they seem to just mind their own.

2. Daily smokers who are very accustomed to the high get very irritable when they don't get to smoke for even a day.

A coworker of mine threw a shot glass out the window and shattered it because he did not get to smoke before work. It turns out he got frustrated because he spilled something earlier. Every once in a while, he'll even confide in me that he wishes to quit one day...but I have seen no such effort.

3. It does affect your health, even though it might not cause cancer.

Trying to play sports against heavy users....too easy. I've noticed they seem to get sick very frequently. One even had a very strange swelling on his lips...and we had to share a bong.

1. It cripples lazy weak-minded people into inertia
2. Smoking anything is bad for your lungs (I use a vapourizer)
3. Costs $
4. Illegal to use, posess, and distribute.
5. Given a bad rap by idiot users
6. "stoner culture"

But other than that, the plant is da bomb!

Even though I think it is awesome and everything, I think that pretending weed is totally harmless is stupid. No form of smoke is good for you.

-The cost
-The legal issues
-The addiction/withdrawal
-The amotivational syndrome
-The health problems (both mental and physical)
-The fact that pot can become a powerful determinant of one's life style
-The fact that it can totaly blind you from seeing all of the above and it makes you believe everything is fine

i honestly think that that's one of the biggest dangers. potheads are often more dangerous than pot for a marijuana user. i do 90% of my smoking by myself -- when i smoke alone, marijuana-related activities really only occupy about 15-30 min of my time; if i'm getting up with other people to smoke, i smoke more, more often and it usually eats up 2-3 hours. alone, i'll usually just do my session, dick around for a few minutes, and then get on with what i would have done stoned or not (which is usually exercise or yard/house work) . . i've got too much energy to sit still, and too many bad memories of stoner laziness to enjoy shirking responsibilities or missed opportunities. with other people, it's more likely to lead to beer, couches, tv and shitty food.

i've managed to overcome/avoid/moderate the other issues you listed, but that's the one that still gets me every now and again. poor health and lack of motivation are both very cyclical . . they're so much easier to avoid if you don't have others reinforcing the idea that they're acceptable (and the longer you live that way, the harder it becomes to change course).

One downside is that it's not acceptable like booze even though it's a lot safer, as far as most people think. Another is that you can get arrested for just having the tinest amount on you.

OP although i was under the impression they're no perma effects from cannabis one of the unlucky few in in 1000+ may trigger a rather mysterious disorder known as Marijuana Psychosis. I send some positivity to these individuals every now and then.

slows you down, makes you lazy, can bring anxiety, loses alot of the benefits later into use.

I really only like it once and awhile nowadays.

The only downside to smoking pot i find is making you lazy and you have no ambitions like i used to be good in school stuff untill i started smoking alot now i just dont care about anything
