The downsides of pot - What do you think?

I noticed that there aren't many articles like this, so either this is in the wrong section or nobody else thinks that pot has any downsides. :\
So this is just an open question for all: What are your experiences with the bad side of weed?

I can say that, from experience, pot can make you do really stupid things. For example, my brother. While under the influence of pot he stole a bike. Dumb right? Turns out it was our doorman's bike, and he only made it to the lobby before he got caught. Also, whenever he's high, he forgets to cover up the fact that he is smoking. We got so many complaints from the neighbors about the smell. And finally, it would seem that it's addictive. We told him plenty of times that we could be kicked out of our house if he continued smoking. But he would never stop, and something always brought him back to the pipe.

So obviously there are lots of upsides to pot, but have you had any bad times with it?

just because your brother is a dumbass doesnt mean there are downsides to marijuana.

ganja is good for you. kinda like how an orange is good for you because it has vit c, marijuana is good for you because it contains thc. the more in your daily diet the better

praise jah

gotta agree

you can't blame the plant
but I see where you coming from

I see

paranoia, anxiety, insanity, amotivation

it's temporary
you just need a break

If you have an anxiety disorder smoking pot can make it worse but hopefully you have the sense to either stop smoking or take a break from it.

Then there are the munchies and how easy it is to just gorge on lots of bad food especially if it's cheap or you are smoking with buds and you decide to order pizza or other food and you do this all the time.

I also don't like how pot can make some people very anti-social or almost give them social anxiety when they're stoned. Or how easy it can sometimes be to get into the habit of just staying home alone and smoking all the time.

Also it's not good to drive stoned or while intoxicated.

Quoted for the motherfucking truth! Anyone who thinks weed has no downsides at all is a dumbass. lest not forget the damage caused by the act of smoking.

There seems to be this conception surrounding marijuana that it isn't a "bad" drug like all the others, and pot smokers in particular get really indignant when medical professionals point out the downsides of the drug. This is largely because drug legislation has been co-opted by political factions.

Drugs are neither good nor bad - they are just objects. For example, morphine has relieved more suffering than any drug in the history of medicine, but for a heroin addict it causes problems. What is bad are the problems that people can develop with the drugs, not the drugs themselves.

Common myths about marijuana:
1. Its not addictive.

In fact, marijuana addiction is the number two most common addiction after alcohol in the clinic I work at.

2. Its a wonderdrug.

It certainly has its uses, but it is by no means a cure-all. Anxiety, one of the most common conditions it is prescribed for in California, is actually made worse long term with marijuana use.

3. Its safer than smoking cigarettes.

Actually, it has almost the exact same carcinogen profile as cigarettes.

4. It has no physical withdrawal.

Ask long-term smokers who have quit. Anxiety, depression, dysphoria, etc. Many smokers, after smoking a number of years, find that the positive effects of the drug disappear and instead cause intense dysphoria. These users often turn to other drugs, like opiates or benzos, in order to retain the ability to get high.

5. Its completely safe.

See above.

6. Its safer than other drugs because its "natural".

This is the stupidest argument of the bunch. Everything is made out of chemicals, from cocaine, to condoms. Whether it is grown in nature or in a lab is completely inconsequential.

Personally, I get no enjoyable euphoria from smoking pot, but my brother and dad love the stuff. Whatever the case, misuse or abuse of any drug can be harmful to individuals.

^^ care to back up the claim on #3.

also just b/c MJ is the 2nd most common addiction in the clinic you work at is negligable when you said yourself in a post the other day that heroin is virtually unfindable in your area, so maybe MJ is popular where your at but who says those people werent court ordered or going cuz they have really 'concerned' parents. what im sayin is how many MJ users over the age of 18 checked them selves into your clinic b/c of MJ?
As for #4 i agree with you that being a chronic user (pun intended) does make quitting unenjoyable but it inst anything too serious.

answers to title
1. price
2. legal issues

Link for fact 3.

And nationwide, marijuana is one of the most common substances that people seek treatment for. As far as how many check themselves in? Almost all of them, because people cannot be involuntarily committed for marijuana treatment.

thanks, but your link for # 3 was put out by the NIDA ( i guess they dont have an agenda)

but in all Honestly most "science and research" about marijuana is usually biased either by the anti -pot people or the pro pot people.

You obviously have no idea what NIDA is. They are the ones that provide medical marijuana for research purposes, being responsible for the majority of positive results.

Moreover, the research wasn't done by NIDA, just reported by them. The citations for that passage are is:

You would have known that is you looked past the web address.

Just because a result is contrary to your beliefs doesn't mean it is wrong. Also, any research that is peer reviewed has a mechanism in place to minimize bias. Do things slip by? Yeah. But objective measures like carcinogen concentration are hard things to spin with outright lying - and I doubt that even NIDA has the balls to do that, considering this research will be replicated multiple times.

Think whatever you want though. Denial is the most powerful drug of all.

How is Marijuana Abused?

Marijuana is usually smoked as a cigarette (joint) or in a pipe. It is also smoked in blunts, which are cigars that have been emptied of tobacco and refilled with marijuana. Since the blunt retains the tobacco leaf used to wrap the cigar, this mode of delivery combines marijuana's active ingredients with nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Marijuana can also be mixed in food or brewed as a tea. As a more concentrated, resinous form it is called hashish, and as a sticky black liquid, hash oil.* Marijuana smoke has a pungent and distinctive, usually sweet-and-sour odor.

When i read a study on cannabis and the words Marijuana is usually.... i switch off. No speak of vapourisers or edibles. Just smoking joints with tobacco, what about pure skunk joints?

I agree with his #3. It may seem kind of obvious but all smoke is bad for you. Smoke is a collection of very small particals, random particals condensing on your lung tissues for years isnt a good thing. Dont compare weed to cigarettes that gets people angry instead compare it to inhaling a bon fire smoke cloud. Both are bad as they contain vaporized tars resins random hydrocarbons and what not. These are just products of combustion and are not good for you.

Its hard to get a pot head to realize that weed isnt safe. As much as i love weed i refuse to turn a blind eye to the obvious dangers of inhaling smoke or the potential negative effects of using a drug.

im not even a pothead anymore, after smoking since i was about 12. I have asthma, sometimes when i had a tight chest from my asthma, i would have a skunk pipe and within a couple of minutes i would be able to breeze tidily again.

Loved smoking the good herb for around 5 years, and then I started to get panic attacks from THC. As a result, I only smoke a few times a year, and I must take a benzo to enjoy the effects(and the combo is quite beautiful, but dangerous if you do this more than a few times a month.

Some do become anti-social, although this isn't exactly a negative. Damage to lungs is also most certainly a down-side.

Nevertheless, on the whole herb is an excellent pain/stress reliever, among the other health benefits, and these "negatives" do not effect everyone.
