Yeah, be polite and don't say anything. I'd recommend using the term counsel instead of lawyer. Seemingly some cops turn into rabid dogs once you mention the word lawyer.

And always bear in mind that the police DO NOT BARGAIN. Their primary job (aside from restoring order) is to collect evidence - ergo "anything you say or do can and will be used against you". Don't say or do anything. Don't admit to anything. Don't give them any EVIDENCE.

If I get pulled over I keep my registration accessible as well as my license and hold it out the window so I'm not digging for something with the cop right there.

And totally true about using the word lawyer. They hate that shit, they don't care about civil rights lol. The cops around here just like to do small drug busts, anything else requires work...Baltimore county cops can go get fucked.

while i love that the OP has shared this, it also makes me sad to think that casual drug users have to be aware in this day and age of the law and potential harm to themselves that they can encounter with law enforcement for simply being young (or old) and experimenting with drugs. "back in my day" the law wasnt as strict in their behavior towards the war on drugs and knowing your legal rights wasnt something to be held against you (unless you were obviously distributing/had large quantities of a substance with the potential for abuse/trafficking/sale). the realization that its becoming common knowledge among the youth of today to know your full legal rights prior to partaking in what is generalized human developmental experimentation with varied substances (legal and not) that most outgrow or when provided with the right assistance can control; is disgusting. let it be.
