The Dive Social v. CHEERS! 🍻

I hate the establishment so much it’s unreal lol

God, I would kill myself if I couldn’t work…if I just got paid to sit around and do nothing I would be dead within 5 years…so depressing, I understand work sucks sometimes, but not working sucks all the time…I don’t know about you guys but I would rather have to work for my money and have the opportunity to make a lot of money than get money for nothing and only get enough to barely live…

I notice a lot of kids want to move out as soon as they turn 18, which is totally fine but if you have the luxury of your parents letting you stay I would do that and save up money before moving out, be a lot better off in the long run, I moved out at 18 working shitty jobs, wish I would have stayed with my parents a couple more years and saved up enough to put a nice down payment on a house

"I love to not being able to do anything and shit on my couch all day every day" said no chronically sick person ever

I have turned into a bit of a workaholic as I've gotten older. But it's because I love what I do (I have two careers, computer programming and music). If you work some shitty job that makes you feel miserable every day, I totally get not feeling motivated or good about it.

But yeah, doing nothing makes me bored, and being bored makes me crazy. I hate the feeling of just wasting time, fiddling around and not feeling like I'm accomplishing anything. It doesn't have to be making money... making money is definitely nice, but what I get out of it is feeling like I'm contributing something. Music makes me far the most satisfied, because I get to make people feel amazing and have a great night. Music is magic, all of the arts are. In fact art of all forms is the only thing that survives of a culture once it's gone, other than, possibly, architecture, if it's built well like the Romans did. Our society doesn't compensate artists (other than the ones that hit the pop jackpot) nearly enough for what we provide.

But I really enjoy computer programming too, and fortunately it pays really well. I'm super busy, but I notice that other than vacations every once in a while, when I have a lot of time off, I tend to get antsy and wish I was working. But for me, "working" sometimes involves hanging out with some of my best friends and playing music together, or playing a show until 2am and drinking beer and partying. I hope for everyone to be able to find something they love to do as their work. Unfortunately, there are a lot of shit jobs and someone has to do them. And if you're stuck in one, or stuck struggling to survive financially, it can be really difficult to change things up and find a different path, or even to be able to believe such a thing is possible. I think it's possible more often than people think, though.

All that said, I'm definitely very lucky, and grateful for it.

If I can save up enough money to start a business anyone can, making the business somewhat successful is another story, at this point I generally do 1,000-1500$ A day, some days more and some days less but that pretty average, ultimately you have to really want it and be willing to make A LOT of sacrifices…it’s pays off in the end but it’s not easy getting there, but nothing worth a shit ever is easy except winning the lottery…this is why the “just give it to me cause I deserve it” mentality just pisses me off

My friend was struggling, penniless, living out of his car... he had just come back to town from 2 years of BASE jumping and kinda half-hoping to die while doing it, very unhappy with his life overall. One day he decided he was going to start a business, doing (at the time) deck cleaning/repairing, house painting, and fencing. He bought a $150 pressure washer, and already had a van and some paintbrushes and stuff like a hammer and saw and whatnot. He printed some fliers and paid $85 per route for the USPS to do direct mailing, I think it was 500 houses per route, he started with 2 or 3 routes. He found he would end up getting an average of 5 jobs (more calls, but 5 signed jobs) per route.., which paid for itself in way less than one job. He worked really hard building and evolving the business over the course of a few years. Now he just does deck staining and washing. So his material costs range from nothing (uses his pressure washer, he got a nicer one though), to a few cans of stain, so it's almost all profit. He doesn't have any employees, he does it all himself. He makes on average $200 an hour now because he's gotten really efficient at it and it's easy work, and never has to advertise anymore because it's all word of mouth (after 5 years). He was making up to 20 grand in a month when he was pushing hard, and bought some land and built his house (mostly himself, he did hire someone to pour the slab and do the electric work and some of the plumbing, and to drill his well, but he learned how to do literally everything else, I helped him some with the labor which was cool, too). He had a kid and now he prioritizes spending time with his family, since his kid is only 3. He usually works 10 hours a week, and makes around $2000 a week, and has over a hundred grand in the bank. He owns his house outright with no mortgage, and he's thinking about buying a second piece of land to build another house that will be an income property and another investment. He takes off for 3-4 months every winter with his family and they travel to Central or South America to surf and explore, and then he works more hours when he gets back to make up the deficit. He just left today for this year's trip actually.

He's probably the happiest person I know. he did work VERY hard to set the business up but he started it from nothing, with no investment, or virtually none, and no family money. His story always makes me think that if you try hard, you can manifest a better life for yourself. he's come a long way since I was renting my spare room to him for a DEEP discount 7/8 years ago, so he didn't have to live out of his truck.

Yep that’s the beauty of capitalism…I wish my parents would have just loaned me the money, god knows I asked them a million times, but they didn’t want me to run a business they wanted me to get a job with a benefits pension, plus they probably figured I’d fuck it up and lose the money anyway, but I’m glad they didn’t now cause everything is mine and nobody can take any credit

People can work themselves into that position currently with plumbing, HVAC and electrician work as long as they're willing to put the work in. No student loan debt

Need more govt funded trade schools for teens, but I'm doubtful the government wants that

At the end of the day, you gotta do what makes you happy, and what feels right. I just feel like a lot of people don't really believe they can set off and build something on their own, so they don't try, and they get stuck in situations that drain their souls.

I mean I got lucky and my parents paid for my undergraduate and I didn't waste money on a graduate degree, and I went into a field that I both love, and that pays really well and provides tons of career opportunities. So part of it was luck (my parents being able to afford to pay for my college), and part of it was a good decision I made (I almost went to school for music... you don't need school for music. Not that I think there's anything wrong with doing it, you just have to be aware that it isn't going to lead you to financial freedom, nor is music unless you work really hard and network with the right people - sadly. But you CAN make ends meet, if you get out there and live and breathe music and get involved with lots of people, and at least you'll love what you do every day) (but instead, I chose computer science. Good decision 17 year old me). So I haven't had to build something from nothing, but I know that you can, anyone can, but you have to believe that you can and then step off the edge of the cliff and do it, which is scary.
