Since diazepam stays in your system longer, if you dose just once or twice a day you will eventually become dependent because it has constantly been in your system. Alprazolam can make it in and out fast enough to avoid developing dependence (which only occurs over the long term).

ADDICTION, on the other hand, is a completely different phenomena. It involves obsessions and cravings for the drug, which tends to accompany something short acting like xanax, or crack.
