THE POEM
I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.....
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer
No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They'd laugh at me I'd fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord,
I came, I stood with downcast eyes.
For in his hands God! held a book;
It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said
"Your name I cannot find
I once was going to write it down...
But never found the time".

"Instead of dreading the time when we should leave this world to go to our Father (die), we should be longing for the hour of our emancipation".

Um, I don't know if this is the point, or anything, or if you just posted this for others, but you didn't write that. Not trying to be an asshole...just kind of wondering what the deal is...

^ If you know who wrote it please, by all means, let us know! Because I do not.

And "the deal" is -- it's poetry, and I thought others might enjoy it! There, now you know ;)

Actually, the author is unknown. Thank you for your very polite response, ChemicalBeauty. Most people think I'm being cynical or rude when I say things like I did. But I was just curious...so thanks. It is poetry...but depending on your view of Christianity, it is totally false. Sincere, but sincerely wrong. You see, that poem suggests that God will put your name into the book of life based on your good works and actions alone in this world. Anyone who studies the bible knows that that is not true. You could be a horrible person and make it into heaven so as long as Christ is in your heart.

I think most people instinctively hate Christianity but I don't think it's as simple as being 'born-again' and going to church every sunday. Read C.S. Lewis and you might see another angle on Christianity. I see it as a liberating religion in that it's based on unconditional love and that it's a message of hope. I have no time for hypocrites and killjoys. Unfortunately most of the 'Christians' become like this which puts a lot of people off. To my mind, the whole point of it is that no one is perfect and that they can't hope to be my their own efforts. So why on earth to they get so hung up about all sorts of silly things. But that's organised religion for you... blah, blah, blah;)

I wouldn't read into this poem so literally. In my opinion, it is written so as to encourage you to take more time out of your life to praise God, spread uplifting words of ecouragement to others and not to worry so much about the little day to day things in which we all become slaves to.

I also would not take the last paragraph literally at all. It seems to me that it is simply the Chrisitian (in the poem's) position juxtaposed with God's, and is simply to make the reader feel the way God may feel when His children become too busy dealing with earthly problems and neglect the bigger picture.

Just my interpretation :)

Nah i see it as what Chemical Beauty said.....christian by name only maybe

I aint religious anyways, but I did like that poem it made me smile.
