WASHINGTON, DC – DEA Administrator Karen P. Tandy today announced the culmination of “Operation Web Tryp” that resulted in ten arrests and targeted five websites. Operation Web Tryp investigated Internet websites distributing highly dangerous designer drug analogues under the guise of “research chemicals” primarily shipped to the U.S. from China and India. These websites are known to have thousands of customers worldwide. One website operator is known to conduct estimated sales of $20,000 per week, while another is known to have been in business for more than five years. These websites sold substances that led to the fatal overdose of at least two individuals and 14 non-fatal overdoses.

“The Internet has become the street corner for many drug users and traffickers. Drug pushers who use the Internet will find themselves out of business and behind bars,” Administrator Tandy said. ‘These dealers now enter into the privacy of our own homes to entice and sell destruction to our children veiled under the illusion of being safe and legal. The formulation of analogues is like a drug dealer’s magic trick meant to fool law enforcement. They didn’t fool us and we must educate our children so they are not fooled either. Today’s action will help prevent future deaths and overdoses, and will serve as notice for those dealing in designer drugs and the illegal use of the Internet.”

ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS

This operation resulted in the following website operators arrests on July 21, 2004:

WWW.RACRESEARCH.COM and WWW.DUNCANLABPRODUCTS.COM
April Curtis and Doug Thompson, website operators of WWW.RACRESEARCH.COM, were arrested yesterday, July 21, in Arizona and Georgia, respectively. The arrests are based on charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substance analogues out of the Southern District of New York. WWW.RACRESEARCH.COM has so far been linked to non-fatal overdoses of two college students. This investigation by DEA New York and the New York Police Department also uncovered the illegal distribution of designer drugs on WWW.DUNCANLABPRODUCTS.COM . This site was operated by Raymond Duncan and supplied by April Curtis. Duncan was arrested yesterday, July 21, in California based on charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substance analogues. Both websites were voluntarily terminated.

David Linder, website operator of WWW.PONDMAN.NU was arrested yesterday. This investigation was conducted by DEA and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Norfolk, VA. The above site, which purportedly sold landscape supplies, also sold designer drugs. Linder supplied these drugs to U.S.-based Navy personnel who later held rave-style parties to facilitate further distribution. To date, an overdose death of an 18-year-old male and three non-fatal overdoses causing serious bodily injuries have been linked to WWW.PONDMAN.NU. Linder is charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substance analogues out of the Eastern District of Virginia. This website will be voluntarily terminated.

DEA Baton Rouge, LA initiated this investigation that resulted in yesterday’s arrest of Michael Burton, operator of WWW.AMERICANCHEMICALSUPPLY.COM. Charges against Burton and an unidentified coconspirator include illegal distribution with enhanced penalties for causing death, aiding and abetting, and forfeiture out of the Middle District of Louisiana. A restraining order will be issued to prevent use of this website.

DEA San Diego yesterday arrested Thomas Kasper, Joseph Kasper, Beth Badrak, and Elaine Villalobos, all California residents, on conspiracy charges to distribute controlled substance analogues, distribution of controlled substance analogues to individuals under the age of 21, and money laundering out of the Southern District of California. These four operated WWW.OMEGAFINECHEMICALS.COM. In addition to the arrests, DEA used warrants to search the Omega Business address, and the residence of Beth Badrak and Tom Kasper in Santa Barbara, CA. A seizure warrant will be served on the Omega website. Two bank accounts were also seized.

BACKGROUND ON DESIGNER DRUGS FROM OPERATION WEB TRYP

The products sold by the above mentioned websites are synthetic substances chemically identified as tryptamines, piperazines, and phenylethylamines. Some of these substances are specifically restricted under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) while others, when intended for human consumption, are controlled under the Controlled Substance Analogue Enforcement Act (CSAEA). Prior to the CSAEA, chemists would cause slight changes in the molecular structure of a controlled substance to circumvent the CSA. The CSAEA was enacted to arm law enforcement with the tools needed to stay one step ahead of the drug dealers’ innovations. On the street and in Internet chat rooms these substances go by innocuous names such as “Foxy Methoxy” and “DIPT.” Many young people are led to believe that these substances are a form of “legal” Ecstasy or LSD because they produce similar hallucinogenic effects. Adolescents and young adults are primary abusers of these chemicals. Many have the false impression that they are not as harmful or addictive as mainstream drugs such as heroin or cocaine. This is a highly dangerous emerging drug trend. Because the recommended dosages can vary by as little as a milligram, any slight miscalculation can cause fatal results.

OVERDOSE VICTIMS

In April 2002, an 18-year-old male in Hancock, New York died after consuming a chemical obtained from WWW.PONDMAN.NU. A 19-year-old male friend of the decedent later confirmed using similar chemicals obtained from WWW.PONDMAN.NU that resulted in him suffering from seizures, floating spots in his vision, memory lapses, uncontrollable teeth grinding and large lumps that would appear and disappear periodically on his face and neck.

In December 2003, police responded to a call of a college student found unconscious, unresponsive and turning blue on the kitchen floor of a residence in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. He had been lying on the floor for 45 minutes before a call for help was made. This student was suffering from the ingestion of a substance he obtained from WWW.RACRESEARCH.COM. This overdose victim now suffers from chronic, violent seizures.

In March 2004, a 22-year-old male resident of St. Francisville, Louisiana died after ingesting a substance he believed to be similar to Ecstasy. When found by his mother he asked to be driven to the hospital where he died three days later. His body temperature had reached an astounding 108 degrees. It was later found that the substance used was sent from WWW.AMERICANCHEMICALSUPPLY.COM, one of the targeted websites in this investigation.

These website operators attempted to give an appearance of legitimacy to their websites by presumably selling these chemicals to bona fide researchers; however, a review of customer lists revealed purchasers with e-mail addresses such as acidtripo420@; ecstasylight@; madtriper17@; moontripperdipt@; partys_with_glow_sticks@; professor@; psychedelic_stoner@; and ravergirlny@.

The question now is, will they be searching through the records of these research chemical websites for their customer information?

if they have the email addresses..then they already have that information...OTOH..they would not likely issue such a press release before everyone had been arrested..including customers...i will post in legal QA...

I think that this is bound to get some major media coverage. So far there are only a few brief mentions of this bust on the vast sources at google news. The only people who have any idea about this are those who happened to visit DEA.gov within the past day.
Odds are that the other remaining companys that deal in these chems will close up shop and flee the country. At least thats whatb I would do...
As far as coustomers, I think that people who made large (10 g's +) purchases are fucked.
It's only a matter of time before the rest of the drug websites catch wind of this, and who knows what might result in the repercussions that are bound to manifest.

Today will allways be remembered as the day that the wave finally broke and the shit hit the fan in this bizzare chronicle known as the american research chemical anomoly.

What? And spend millions of dollars to go after every person around the globe to try and get evidence that they've consumed research chemicals..? Quite unlikely. Maybe they'll search for big time buyers, but I doubt many people will get busted for this.

They're just trying to shut down the internet business.. Soon we'll have many more OD's.. These chemicals are going to be, without a doubt, still be made and sold. It wil only happen underground, what surely will make everything much more dangerous. Soon we're going to have shady dealers selling you pills that contain 20 mg of 2C-E..

"Here, try this new pill man.."
"What is it..?"
"I don't know man, some kind of trippy new mix of LSD and Ecstacy.."
"Cool, give me that shit!"

:(

‘These dealers now enter into the privacy of our own homes to entice and sell destruction to our children veiled under the illusion of being safe and legal.'

About 3 months ago I personally visited all but one of the sites listed/busted in the article.... ONLY after making considerable effort (meaning more than say ~20 mouseclicks) to even FIND them. Its not like the links were spammed to my yahoo email... or god-forbid, its not like the Zantrex or TrimSpa commercials that run day after day on basic cable. But then again, commercials could NEVER be construed as intruding into "the privacy of our own homes to entice and sell destruction to our children veiled under the illusion of being safe and legal" because Brand Name Advertising always has our best... oh who the hell am I kidding?! :p

ANYHOW.... there is no way in hell any customer of these sites would be able to purchase anything without being subjected to disclaimers and warnings multiple times: "NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!" most of them say.... and any purchased chemicals were sent in containers which bore labels that even had skull and crossbones on them. I guess someone over at the DEA thought this was too vague.

Amazing.
Other common "analogues":
serotonin, Dopamine, norepinephrine.... in fact many natually occuring psychoactive chemicals are extremely close relatives of our primary neurotransmitters... Hell DMT is naturally created in the human brain!

Oh yes, and illegal use of the internet? Newsflash - theres no such thing!

Please Mr. News Editor, feed the public more tainted garbage!

^ the DEAs case might not be that strong...but they will no doubt grab enough customers to testify that they used the drugs illegally..prolly under some kind of deal...the drugs themselves will be emergency scheduled within the next month.. followed by legislation similar to that in the UK..which covers entire classes of chemicals...

Again, it just shows you what the public wants. And it's another attempt by our government to silence what cannot be silenced! show us our rights to freedom and liberty i say!

Ouch, I've been expecting this to happen after hearing few members from IRC, and others on drug harm reduction forums getting subpoenaed by Grand Jury on Pondman case starting months ago. I hope David kicks Feds' asses. He's hella cool person despite on recevigin consant ass-kicking from Feds inside and outside courtroom for years regarding to GBL/GHB. I wish him good luck on winning this battle.

I believe suppliers should not be held responsible for these deaths, hence their research chemical warning labels. We're responsible on decision for putting these chemicals in our mouth and nose. Foxy fucked up my visions and memory, I'm not going to blame it on 2 of these suppliers I've bought shitload of them from in the past.

David once got to the point on making $60k+ monthly before he had to undergo liver biospy from GBL/GHB.. That's lot of money to make in a month.

I'm so sad, in fact I'm teary eyed. I love RC's, to me half the thrill is trying something new. And now they have been taken from me too. All because of careless individuals who didn't do their homework first. So sad must go curl up in my sock drawer and sleep for days.

Wait, the US Navy was distributing RC's and throwing raves ? Wow Navy has come a long way since my grandpa's d-day!

Well, I think we all knew that it was going to happen sooner or later, It was guaranteed that people were going to ingest dangerous amount of chems without scales.

It just means going back to your plain oll Psilocybin, mescaline, etc...

I'll sure miss the MDX type compounds. Getting a nice glow without the etardation was nice..

Yes, that will make DXM powder more difficult to buy.

I believe I should mention this-
Gravol- an idiot emerged from Dextroverse.org created an RCML (Research Chemical Mailing List) list; it consisted nearly ALL of RCs suppliers' websites, contact info, rating system to grade the quality of their products, customers' feedbacks about their services/products, and even inculded a chart of which products they're currently selling. It is updated on weekly basis. Many of us believed this indeed was a *very bad* idea to begin with because Gravol already clearly stated that he have intentions of having that RCML list easily available to the 'public' so others wouldn't have difficulty of finding chemicals they wanted- exactly like marketing these delicous Girl Scout cookies in the mall. Unfortunately that fucking idiot refused to step down that idea after receiving numerous personal threats from many other members in my clique little over a year ago or more than that..

Like I said on another forum-
"My instinct tells me this is far from being over with. DEA's still looking for more victims to snag to find more targets, and they're playing very dirty."

Feds arrest 10 in connection with Net designer drug sales
By Janey McConnaughey, Associated Press

July 21/2004

NEW ORLEANS — Ten people have been arrested on charges they sold or conspired to sell Ecstasy-like drugs and chemicals over the Internet, investigators said Thursday. The sales allegedly caused at least 16 overdoses, two of them fatal.

The drugs were supposedly being sold as research chemicals, but buyers' e-mail names included acidtripo420, ecstasylight, ravergirlny and psychedeleic_stoner , the Drug Enforcement Agency said.

An indictment handed down Wednesday against Michael Burton, 25, of Las Vegas, accuses him of causing a man's death — not as a murder charge but as a way to increase the sentence if he's convicted.

Burton's roommate, Keith Russart, 25, also was arrested. Both were charged on four counts of distributing illegal drugs, said U.S. Attorney David Dugas of Baton Rouge. The charges carry a prison term of 20 years to life in prison.

The eight others arrested this week live in Arizona, Georgia and California. The sales occurred in various states. All eight face conspiracy charges.

A full list of names and charges other than those against Russart and Burton:

• April Curtis, 45, of Carefree, Ariz., and Doug Thompson, 33, of Valdosta, Ga., operators of www.racresearch.com, were arrested July 21 on charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled drug analogues out of the Southern District of New York. The site has been linked to non-fatal overdoses of two college students.

• Raymond Duncan, 22, of Wildomar, Calif., operator of www.duncanlabproducts.com, was arrested Wednesday on charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substance analogues. Curtis supplied Duncan's drugs, the DEA said.

• David Linder, 50, Bullhead City, Ariz., was arrested Wednesday, accused of using the www.pondman.nu landscape supply site to sell designer drugs to U.S. Navy personnel in Norfolk, Va. Drugs from the site killed an 18-year-old and caused at least three overdoses which caused serious injuries, the DEA said. Charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substance analogues in the Eastern District of Virginia.

• Thomas Kasper, 42, and Beth Badrak, 36, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Joseph Kasper, 44, and Elaine Villalobos, 26, both of Santa Maria, Calif., on charges of conspiracy to distribute designer drug analogues, selling the drugs to people under age 21, and money laundering. They ran www.omegafinechemicals.com. Agents seized Omega's domain name and two bank accounts, searched the home of Thomas Kasper and Badrak, and searched the Omega business address.

Three of five Web sites selling the drugs could not be reached Thursday. The fourth brought up a screen stating that the DEA had "restrained" it.

The fifth — Burton's site — carried a 650-word statement that said, among other things, that the drugs were for research and not for human consumption.

The DEA alleged the suspects distributed three groups of hallucinogens and other drugs: tryptamines and phenylethylamines, which are related to important brain chemicals; and piperazines, which are related to a drug used for pinworms and roundworms.

"Many young people are led to believe that these substances are a form of 'legal' Ecstasy or LSD because they produce similar hallucinogenic effects. ... Many have the false impression that they are not as harmful or addictive as mainstream drugs such as heroin or cocaine," the DEA said.

However, it said, recommended dosages can vary by as little as a milligram, so a slight miscalculation can cause death.

Geniuses @ USA Today

I guess we weren't enjoying our lives in a government-approved fashion. Yet another reason why I'm saving up to move away from here. RCs had a spectacular safety record compared to almost anything legal you could name. IMO, LSD was a far cry safer, but there isn't exactly much of that going around these days. Time to find something more dangerous I guess.

move away from here? many RC's that are still legal here have been illegal in most european country's for a while now...

RC co's will survive. they will and have moved to offshore sites where the countries have no laws or enforcement for RC's. just order it from india, east europe, china........
