the book is always better than the movie...

Has anyone read Mystic River and seen the movie currently out starring Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon (directed by the man himself, CLint Eastwood)?

The book is one of my favourites of the past coupla years - beautifully written and it portrays friendship, loss and guilty so unflinchingly.

The movie however just doesn't nail the tension or the suspense. Its a great movie in almost all departments but there is just something missing. It's a very intimate, intense story lacking much action. It's the type of plot where the movie just has to absolutely keep you glued to the screen with a sense of foreboding suspense. When reading the book I remember actually feeling really tense and itching to see what would happen next. I really cared about the characters and it evoked such an oppressively tense atmosphere. The movie just didn't quite do the same thing (regardless of the fact that I knew the storyline - its not a surprise ending or anything).

i hate that i missed this thread's inception and now don't have time to read through the entire thing right now. this may have already been mentioned but i thought that fight club lived up to the movie and the lord of the rings has done well. also the godfather.

by the way, alasdair, i can't believe i missed this thread. i'll have to check it out later when i have more time.

I know several people have already mention Fight Club. For me, it was a tough call between the two. I thought both were exceptional. I actually liked the ending better in the movie.

^I agree

I don't know if anyone has seen "Snow Falling On Cedars" but the book was so much better

No shit, they excluded almost everything from the book that made it different and impressive. The suits they wore were an enormous part of the story, and by story I mean what the movie looked at and decided to throw away. I heard that the director didn't even finish the book! (although how can that possibly be true) The book was not about fighting aliens, it was about the personal development and change of Johnny Ricco, and the events he went through in preperation. The movie scrapped almost the entire book and focused on fighting and hollywood cliche's. What an atrocious mess.

^^^ Let's just hope hollywood dosen't get it's hands on friday. They'll probaly turn her into a virgn. While I'd love to see it in film, if it got anything less then an XXX rating the movie just wouldn'tr be fair to the book.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a great movie, but it's a better book. Many people don't even know it was a book first. Plus, Cameron Crowe went undercover as a student in a highschool to get the true story.
In the book the characters are so much more devoloped and the movie is "hollywoodified" of course ,meaning that they put their own twist on the true story.

I would say A River Runs Through It was a better movie than book. I liked the book a lot, but the acting really brought the characters to life for me.

Get Shorty the film was much better than the book. While it did leave out much of the stuff in the book but the movie moves allot quicker & I found it just as witty as the book. Now with the sequel currently being shot & directed by F.Gary gray the same guy who did friday,A man apart & The italian job its a different story. It keeps the same title from the book "Be cool" and deals with Palmer (travolta) going into the music bizz & dealing with everyone from Aerosmith, gangsta rappers & teen idols. The book sequel was better than the first but with this director I dunno if Gray can pull off the witty cool satire or hollywood style that Sonnenfield brought to the first one. Also we have the ROCK as a gay bodyguard who dreams of being a singer. The rest of those involved in the project are Uma Thurman,Andre3000,cedric the entertainer,Danny devito,James gandolfini,Harvey keitel, steven tyler & Vince Vaughn. I recommend anyone who likes Hollywood satire to pick up "Be Cool" at your local bookstore on paperback for 6 bucks. BE COOL

Generally I think it depends on which you were exposed to first. If the book was one such as LoTR where it is very detailed and drawn out in sections and you chanced to see the movie and then attempted to read the book....chances are you would prefer the movie because the book takes a bit to get into.

However, if one reads the book first and falls in love with it....you tend to scrutinize the movie a lot more when it comes to how well it followed the book and whether or not the correct actors/actresses were chosen to fit the image you had worked up in your head.

Me? I like the Power of One both in movie and book format. It was easy because neither really followed the same line at all...they were loosely similar.

^^^ i totally agree. i had procrastinated over the lotr books for so long, and never got 'round to reading them before the films (though i am a big book fan in general). now whenever i try to read them, i just can't get into them.

i guess i'm not a big fan of tolkien's drawn-out meandering narrative anyway, but i definitely think i would have enjoyed it a lot more without that subtle feeling of "get to the action" in the back of my head which was brought on by having seen the films.

good post kiwikr :)

^^ Did ya read the first couple pages of this thread, where that was discussed??

1234: I found it easy to get into the LOTR books, surprisingly, but I've had to put them down since I've been forced to read textbooks instead of actual good books :) I knew the action was coming, and I was excited to see what had been left out.. So, I look forward to finishing them. I read them with the image that has been created in my mind from the movies, which to some is a bad thing, but that doesn't really bother me, since I adored the movies and the beauty of them.
