The Big Day Out 2006- organisers issue warning

Ahh im a lil bit paranoid now...ive bee on a break from bikkies....thought the BDO would be perfect for 'breaking' the break if ya get me....Well my question is, is a personal amount (4?) likely 2 be smelt...in GENERAL...i kno there can be no deffinate answers...and what exactly is calssified as 'personal use'? Any replys would b cool, Thanx guys...enjoi ur bdo! Party Safe

Okay this is a bit of overkill LOL, I don't expect you to read them all but here they are...

personal consumption v/s trafficking
Vic info on amounts
General info
Caught - court - conviction? Examples needed.
is dealing drugs really that dangerous
Got caught with 2 pts meth what now?
Criminal Question

The definition of personal consumption varies from state to state and is based upon the weight of drugs found on you, not a specific number of pills. Browse some of the threads above for general idea of what that number is.

Regarding the GC BDO, I could not for the life of me find a single person in or around the boiler room that wasn't off chops by the end of the night. So yeah, there was still plenty of drugs around which I think generally makes the crowd behaviour better. Still a few drunk wankers but otherwise everything was good :D

Update for Melbourne, friend from the BDO sent me an email mentioning that local police can neither confirm nor deny that the dogs will be patrolling the backstage area.

Considering the stuff I've seen demanded in writing on riders, could make for an interesting day backstage!

Say 'hypothetically' SWIM was to go to the Sydney BDO tomorrow. And hypothetically he/she had dacked sum personal use 'contraband'....if a dog signals to its trainer that it smells sumthin on he/she...and nothing is found by cooperating and letting them pat him/her down etc...What do the cops do now? What should he/she say? In general would they usually let u off...or take u 2 the cop shop for a more 'thorough' search etc. All hypothetical of course.

I found a nifty little site with advice provided by legal professionals in Victoria, though I have no doubt that these guidelines apply regardless of which state you're in.

Answering police questions

Apart from name and address, you have the right to refuse to answer any other questions.

You can say "no comment" or "on legal advice I have no comment to make". Practise this and be prepared to be repetitive.

There are no ”off the record” conversations with police and many people are convicted on statements that they made to the police.

Searches

Police do not have an automatic right to search you unless they reasonably believe that you are carrying a weapon, illegal drugs or stolen property. Always ask police why they want to search you.

Police can do a "strip search" if they have reasonable grounds for believing that you are carrying a weapon, illegal drugs or stolen property. It should not be conducted in a public space and should be done by a police officer of the same gender as you. Police cannot touch you improperly or conduct an external or internal physical examination without a court order or your consent.

If you are arrested, police will routinely do a "pat-down" search and may remove items of property such as belts, earrings, piercings, necklaces and the contents of your pockets. Make sure that they list all of these items so that you can get them back later.

Activist legal rights: a short guide

And yes, a sniffer dog picking you out is "reasonable grounds".

on jjj they where saying that they where going to be strip searching people 8o
mabe just a scare tacktick i can see how a dog sitting next to you justifies them stripping you!
i wonder if they do a cavity search?? 8(

Typing stuff out? LOL :)

There are ways to find out things not in the online papers that don't involve typing ;)

Any idea which section it was in? Editorial, letters, news? Sounds interesting.

Here's the only thing I've managed to find so far about Sydney's BDO arrests

Meanwhile, 100 police with sniffer dogs were involved in a drug-detection operation earlier in the day, with teams at Olympic Park, Central and Hornsby stations.

More than 30 people were searched for drugs, with most of them released after police confiscated small amounts of drugs.

From Daily Telegraph

Though another article on the News site says there were 122 arrests with 219 drug charges.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable day, regardless of nosy doggies. :)

Just found this, it's a few days old.

Sniffer dogs ineffective, say Greens
From: AAP
January 25, 2006

THE Greens have accused the New South Wales Government of sitting on a report they believe shows that sniffer dogs are ineffective at catching drug dealers.

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon today said the State Government should release the Ombudsman's report on the controversial use of sniffer dogs, which she suspected were not catching big-time dealers but instead netting young people with small amounts of recreational drugs.

Her call for the report to be made public comes on the eve of the Big Day Out music festival in Sydney, where police sniffer dogs are expected to target young revellers carrying ecstasy.

"If the Ombudsman's report was released it could well reveal that Big Day Out-style sniffer dog operations are a waste of public money because they are not catching major drug traffickers and dealers," Ms Rhiannon said in a statement.

"Four years after the Government passed tougher sniffer dog powers, we are still waiting for the release of the Ombudsman's review of their performance.

"The Greens call on the Government to stop sitting on the Ombudsman's report and admit that sniffer dogs are unnecessary and a huge waste of resources."

The Greens will distribute "Sniff Off" stickers at the Big Day Out tomorrow, designed to protest against the use of sniffer dogs.

"Sniffer dog operations by the police treat young people like criminals and create resentment towards the police," Ms Rhiannon said.
