The Big & Dandy Psychedelic Books Thread

my friend got me a book at Borders called Breaking Open The Head. I haven't sat down and read pages yet, but from what I've taken in of the book, it's fucking incredible. You should look for it.

Naked Lunch - William S. Burroughs
really crazy book i have never read something similiar

not really about psychedelics but really good book: Steppenwolf - Hermann Hesse

which aldous huxley book ?

im going to buy an aldous huxley book but i cant decide between island and doors of preception, which is better ? which one did you enjoy more and why ?

Doors of Perception is classic. You can read it online, but I personally find advantages to owning a copy. I've lent it out to a good number of people. Also, it's shorter, you can read it in a day or two, but you'll think about it for much longer. It's overall a good read and a great resource.
Island is awesome, but it's longer, and more of an endeavor to read. Of course, if you get into the story, it'll go by like nothing. If you're looking for fiction, go with Island. If you're looking for one of the first ever (and best, imo) trip reports, go with Doors.

Read both Brave New World and Island. They complement each other perfectly. One is the counter point to the other so to speak. They have a lot of parallels. One is about the evils of society and modern technology and the other is about the benefits and positive aspects of it if used correctly and conservatively.

For example: In Brave New World the totalitarian government uses hypnosis and mind control to indoctrinate its population while the society in Island uses hypnosis and meditation to relieve mental distress, PTSD, and even uses it for anesthesia during medical operations (which I'm not sure is possible but is a cool idea).

One also uses drugs to control the population while the other uses it to open their minds and allow them to develop as individuals. There are many parallels between the two books.

Island is an amazing book with a lot of psychedelic references and ideas. I read it a few months ago and already want to re read it at some point. It also has a very interesting description of an intense psychedelic experience towards the end.

Never read Doors of Perception. It is now on my very long "to read" list.

^took the words right out of my mouth.

Island > After Many a Summer > Brave New World

The Doors of Perception is in a category of it's own.

If you don't have it Brave New World.
From your choices though get Doors of Perception, they'll both blow your mind.

Moksha - Huxley's collected letters on psychedelics is also a good read. I was particularly impressed by the forward by Hofmann in my old copy.

i would read heaven & hell and the doors of perception as well as island. though brave new world is a good read, it's got a different type of reality entailed to it. the best huxely is any huxely, i read point counter point like once a year and haven't finished it yet! extremely satisfying yet totally distorted drama. it literally takes to back in time to the 1920's as opposed to brave new world bringing you up to date with the world as people choose to allow themselves to see it in the 1930's. read doors of perception if you need to learn though. thinking about this makes me want to find a spikey tree to admire.
