this thread is about rock music that hits me like the dark ambient old school keyboard/synth feel of early wu tang... i mentioned only liking the first of each artists in the group's releases. i didn't even mention in this thread that the first wu release "enter the 36 chambers" doesn't really have the bizarre what i'd call ambient feel that sounds kind of evil to me that the genius album "liquid swords" and method man's "tical" has at certain points, "only built for cuban linx" by raekwon goes pretty hard too, some of my favorite wu tang tracks are on that. i don't know if it's evil, but the high lights on these albums sound like something is going wrong to me, and it's just lo fi keyboards. shit drove me insane when i heard it in third grade and all through out my life listening up until 40 and probably beyond. i like the first wu tang album, and think it's great. it's a lot of people's favorites, but the high lights of the wu tang albums i mentioned have their own specific feel.
through out this thread there are indie rock groups that remind me of the going wrong or maybe evil feel of the albums "tical", "liquid swords," and "only built for cuban linx"... i didn't really delve into pop punk though. i honestly don't think a lot of pop punk i like would appeal to the sound of wu tang listeners, but the shoegaze sound of swirllies and the live video of the band seely that i posted in this thread i think have the same vibe as wu tang. seely is kind of slower indie rock than swirlies, but swirlies sounds evil as shit to me so i think that relates to wu... an album by a shoegaze style indie rock band from the 80's that a lot of wu tang fans that enjoy the style i describe would tolerate would be "loveless" by my bloody valentine. i think it has a deep ambient feel, but i think it lacks any type of hatred or evil swirlies, seely, and Wu has. "loveless" by my bloody valentine is super ambient though... another crazy song is "katy song" by red house painters". when i think of how that red house painters song makes me feel like Wu, i have to say confusion is also added into the emotion. when the underlying guitar comes in about half way through "katy song" i have no idea what is going on. "katy song" and seely remind me of god coming to judge us as revelation, like if god made himself known to all people and decided to just not be very nice but wanted to appear to be beautiful, it would be that music. i'm not sure if that was the intent of the artists. anyways, i want to talk about pop punk and get away from the indie rock genres i've been posting about in this thread.
i wanted to post some pop punk and describe the feeling of WU:
this song drives me insane the same way wu does. the music catches my attention but also washes over me... i don't think it really has the same ambient feel of wu tang though. i don't know if it has the same emotional wave length at times. this may come across as a juvenile attempt at music, but this is a strong point on the punk o' rama compilation series that i believe was probably over looked as some of the other bands in the series were more popular. punk o' rama compilations were sold at the hot topic stores through out the late 90's and early 2000's... like i said, i don't think this song should be brought to the attention of all wu fans persay, but this song hits:
what reminded me of this thread being posted and deciding to update it was going through the album by the pop punk band Drexel for the millionth time and deciding to skip to my high light tracks. i've done this before and i don't always have this thought process, but i listen to this track which i always think has the wu tang feel:
^^^^^^^listening to this track, i really have the feeling of Wu like something is going wrong. i think the guitar has a lot of octave chords which can sometimes give a wu tang like feel, but that's definitely not a given with octave chords. there isn't a lot of power chords like the above song by the band okser. i don't know if that's what makes it different. i think both of the artists are probably having pretty similar muses when making the music. i'd probably say drexel's track is objectively more melodic. i like evil and melodic. i really feel like "i don't give a fuck" when listening to that track by osker, but it's kind of fun. i'm not sure... "the only one" by drexel is kind of like " i hate my life", but in a way that makes me feel uplifted (EDIT: i wrote uplifted, but i want to seperate "uplifted" from "fun" which i describe the other track. "uplifted" should maybe read "spiritual" or even "fucked up" lol).
here is another track by drexel on the same album that i don't think is really wu tang clan related. i hear so much hope when listening the lyrics "gone some where where you belong". when the lyrics "see all your friends" is going on, it's kind of chaotic,, but this is a feel good track. the track "the only one" by drexel is darker, darkness is the Wu i like... this track isn't Wu to me... way too much hope... i'm not sure if i ever even realized it until trying to write this thread, i probably have, but i feel like the below track and the first track i posted by the band osker have some hope or maybe the osker song doesn't give a fuck, like they are both pretty bizarre and weird, but i'm not sure if it's really the same thing as Wu. i question whether or not the sound of wu tang is not giving a fuck. i find wu tang to be deeply concerning, it's not fun, but it will bring the right person to a higher level with it's sound.... here is "walden pond" by drexel. not entirely a Wu track:
to get into the Wu, "tical" the song is probably the darkest song on method man's "tical" album, but the album is just bizarre and awesome pretty much the whole way through. i find it at least tolerable:
"investigative reports" by the genius is also another super deep track.... with out the subject of drugs and how fucked up the world is, this is a deeply meditative track, but with the thoughts of how fucked up everything is and hearing this first in grade school and having older drug addicted relatives, this was fucked up for me:
i mentioned the album "loveless" speaking of shoegaze style indie rock and comparing it to the wu,,, i really have to stress, yes it has the same ambient feel, but it doesn't feel like something is going wrong..... idk.
i also mentioned i liked all the first releases by all the wu tang members best, but ghostface's first release and bobby digital's album are not good to me at all. can't listen to that shit. too much fun, not down with funky hip hop a lot of the time... i thought ghostface and raekwon were the same dude for years. idk. i know a lot of people love ghostface and new ghostface albums. i don't enjoy any of his albums, but he has some strong verses on a lot of the albums i mentioned, like his verse on the song "investigative reports" posted above is one of my favorite verses of hip hop. i can't get into his solo stuff though.
