Drug, gun sting policeman a 'traitor'

A total of nine people have now been charged over an alleged drug and gun trafficking network in Sydney that police say involved a fellow officer.

Police have branded their fellow officer as a "traitor".

The 25-year-old constable was charged last week with three counts of corruption and making and using a false document.

At the same time two men were arrested and charged with bribery and drug offences.

Yesterday a further six men were arrested after raids on 10 properties across Sydney.

Police seized fake credit cards, drugs, pistols and a machine gun that fires 600 rounds a minute.

They also dismantled three drug labs at Marrickville and Homebush.

Police say they are all part of a gun and drug trafficking network that has been under investigation by the Asian crime squad since November last year.

A 21-year-old alleged associate of the Rebels bikies will face court today accused of bribing the policeman and trafficking guns.

A 30-year-old man is also accused of colluding with the policeman, and will face court today charged with 14 offences.

A 28-year-old Hinchinbrook man will also face court today on weapons and drugs charges.

Three others are being kept in custody to face court at a later date.

The head of the Asian crime squad, Detective Superintendent Scott Cook, said yesterday that police had dealt a substantial blow to the group involved and the gun trafficking industry.

"This is not a gang or a hierarchical structure with certain numbers of members and so on," Superintendent said.

"This is a criminal network of associates who don't drink at the pub with each other, but they engage solely for the purpose with each other to trade in firearms and drugs."

Court hears top cop 'desperate for money'

A court has heard former New South Wales Crime Commission investigator Mark Standen used his inside knowledge in a plot to import 300kg of pseudoephedrine.

Mark Standen has pleaded not guilty to conspiring to import the drug, to taking part in supplying it and perverting the course of justice.

In his opening address Crown Prosecutor Tim Game SC said the 54-year-old was an experienced narcotics investigator who worked with a well-known drug trafficker James Kinch and businessman Bakhos Jalalaty to import the drug - which can be used to manufacture "speed" or "ice".

The prosecutor alleged the plot involved importing at least 300kg of pseudoephedrine in a container of rice coming from Pakistan.

The court heard the drugs would be stored in a Sydney warehouse associated with Bakhos Jalalaty's business.

"The crown case is the accused's motive in committing these offences was financial," Mr Game said.

He told the jurors they will hear intercepted phone calls showing Mark Standen was "desperate for money", because he had spent beyond his means.

The prosecutor said Mark Standen has spent 30 years in law enforcement and was employed to investigate and reduce the incidence of illegal drug trafficking and other crime.

He said he had an inside knowledge of police procedures and working with informers.

Mark Standen sat in the dock taking notes during the prosecutors opening.

His trial continues.

The 30-year-old Marrickville man faced court today on 14 charges including trafficking guns and possession of a 38-calibre handgun.

Police allege he bribed Constable Steve Jensen, from Sydney's north-west, last month and supplied ammunition and the drug "ice" at the same time.

25-year-old Jensen was arrested last week and charged with fraud and corruption offences.

Another two men were arrested at the same time.

Today in court Thadanabath did not apply for bail and it was officially refused.

“For the second year running, police have targeted cannabis cultivation at a large number of properties in and around Griffith.

“We have relied heavily on valuable information from the community as well intelligence we gathered to identify where cannabis crops were being cultivated.

Police uncover tenth cannabis plantation & arrest another five people including teen

Police conducting a drug operation in Griffith have uncovered ten cannabis plantations in five days, seizing plants with an estimated value of $20million.

Late this afternoon, Griffith LAC and State Crime Command officers executed a warrant at a farm at Tharbogong and arrested five people, including a 14-year-old boy inside a drying shed containing a large number of just-harvested cannabis plants.

They have been taken into custody for questioning.

These arrests follow that of five men, arrested last night while allegedly conducting a midnight harvest of a cannabis crop hidden in a vineyard at Nericon, near Griffith. Four of these men were Indian nationals including two illegal citizens who had been working as farmhands.

It will be alleged the men had been ordered by crime bosses to harvest some 5000 cannabis plants in the dead of night in an attempt to avoid detection by police.

A total of 18 people have now been arrested during a joint cannabis eradication operation launched on Monday by Griffith Local Area Command Police and the State Crime Command Drug Squad and Firearms and Organised Crime Squad.

To date, 11 properties or farms including vineyards and orchards have been raided with more than 10,000 cannabis plants seized, with an estimated value of $20 million.

For the past year the SCC Drug Squad and FAOCS has been conducting joint investigations into Italian organised crime and drug syndicates throughout NSW and interstate.

Drug Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham said police have identified a number of persons of Italian heritage in the Griffith area with alleged links to organised drug and crime syndicates.

“A large number of those arrested over the past four days were farmhands employed to cultivate and harvest plantations,” Det Supt Bingham said.

“We have also identified a number of others allegedly linked to Italian Organised Crime syndicates and investigations will continue into these syndicates.

“The eradication operation conducted over the past few days in the Griffith district triggered panic harvesting at two properties which had been under police surveillance.

“NSW Police have had significant resources in this area gathering intelligence and evidence and I can assure the community that we will make further arrests and we will continue to uncover and eradicate cannabis crops.

Griffith Local Area Commander Michael Rowan said local police will continue to conduct operations targeting the cultivation of cannabis in the Griffith LAC.

“At a number of farms we found significant and elaborate attempts to disguise the presence of these crops growing amongst vines and among other fruit trees,” Supt Rowan said.

“Clearly given the number of plants under cultivation the crops were destined for the Sydney and Melbourne drug markets and these seizures will significantly dent the supply of cannabis for some time.”

[NZ] Supermarket staffer stole $280K for meth

A trusted staffer at a New Plymouth supermarket has been found guilty of stealing more than a quarter of a million dollars from her employer over four years.

Clare Strachan stole $282,718.80 from New World where she was administration manager, to buy methamphetamine for her and her partner, the New Plymouth District Court heard yesterday.

Strachan, 29, had worked at the supermarket for more than nine years and was trusted by owner Rob Dowman, the Taranaki Daily News reported. The theft, from July 2006 until May last year, nearly closed the business.

She stole the money through various means, including paying herself extra through the wage system, stealing phone card money and transferring invoice payments to her bank account.

After she was arrested at work on November 25 and fired, Strachan confessed to police.

Strachan's lawyer, Kylie Pascoe, said her client was aware of the seriousness of the offending, and was willing to take part in a restorative justice conference with Mr Dowman.

Her former employer told police he wanted Strachan to repay $236,990.09.

Judge Allan Roberts convicted Strachan on 51 charges of computer crime and theft as a person in a special relationship. She was remanded on bail for sentencing on May 5.

Her partner, Brendyn Clapham, faced 53 charges of money laundering, receiving, and using a document for pecuniary advantage which police alleged made up nearly $46,000 of the total amount taken. He has not yet entered a plea.

[NZ] Meth mules get nine years

Two smugglers have been have been jailed after trying to bring almost 1kg of methamphetamine into New Zealand by swallowing it.

Lithuanians Zenarars Slipkus and Nerijus Sliupas were stopped by Customs officials when they arrived at Auckland airport from Bangkok last September.

Officials ordered a CT scan and found one had 542.8g of P in his abdomen and the other 329.8g.

The amounts were comparable to about 19 and 12 teabags respectively. The drugs would have had a street value of almost $900,000.

They pleaded guilty to importing P in Manukau District Court shortly after their arrest and were each sentenced to nine years in jail at the High Court at Auckland this month.

During sentencing, Justice Graham Lang said had the men been New Zealand citizens they would have been subject to parole conditions for the rest of their lives.

"That is how seriously our country views the importation of a drug like methamphetamine."

He said life would in a New Zealand prison would be difficult because they could not speak English.

The court heard the men were recruited in Bangkok and claimed they were offered nothing more than a free trip to New Zealand.

"Whatever your motivation, you both agreed to swallow packages containing what you knew to be an illegal substance," the judge said.

"In doing so you must have known that you were taking a risk of being punished severely if you were caught bringing the substance into New Zealand."

Slipkus has a wife and 10-year-old child in Lithuania.

Gold Coast police target illicit drugs in Operation Sentinel II

Gold Coast police, including plain clothes and uniformed officers, with support from State Crime Operations Command and the Brisbane Dog Squad with PD Bear and PD Toby, conducted Operation Sentinel II overnight, targeting illicit drugs and good order offences in Gold Coast entertainment precincts, resulting in 13 people being arrested on 20 charges.

Gold Coast District Officer Superintendent Paul Ziebarth said Operation Sentinel II was a follow-up after Friday nights’ inaugural operation in the Broadbeach CBD and Surfers Paradise Drink Safe Precinct, designed to address the community concerns regarding illegal drugs and the subsequent impact of drug intoxication on the safety and security of patrons.

“We will continue to work closely with the local community and businesses to ensure the Gold Coast entertainment precincts are safe and secure places for people to live, work and visit.”

In addition to the police dogs conducting passive drug detections a search warrant was executed on a Surfers Paradise licensed premise following a tip-off alleging drug activity.

As a result a 27-year-old Surfers Paradise man was charged with one count of supply dangerous drugs, two counts of possession of dangerous drugs and one count of possessing anything used in the commission of a crime after police allegedly located a quantity of MDMA tablets and cocaine. He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on April 5.

Police also charged a 26-year-old Surfers Paradise woman after officers allegedly located amphetamines and drug utensils. She is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on April 7 charged with possessing a dangerous drug, possessing utensil and possessing anything used in the commission of a crime.

A 21-year-old man from Broadbeach Waters was charged with possessing dangerous drugs after being allegedly found in possession of cannabis in the Broadbeach precinct after being ejected from a nightclub.

During the operation police also arrested 10 people on a further 12 charges relating to street offences.

“Information from the public is vital in helping to keep our entertainment precincts safe and secure from the impact of drug induced violence and harm, we ask the community to work with us and call Crime Stoppers, anonymously if you wish, on 1800 333 000 with information.

“We have been heartened by the cooperation from the many responsible nightclub owners who have also invited police conducting passive drug detections onto their premises.

“This weekend we have seen a noticeable improvement in intoxication levels and we look forward to working in partnership with the industry to address drug and alcohol related disorder and violence that tarnishes the enjoyment of entertainment precincts.”

Operation Sentinel will be an ongoing component of Gold Coast Police’s early intervention and high visibility policing strategies.

Five injured in suspected drug lab explosion

Police say a suspected drug lab explosion in the Perth suburb of Carlisle was so powerful it lifted the roof of the house and sent a fridge smashing through a wall.

Four men and a woman were in the unit in Bishopgate Street late yesterday when the blast occurred.

They suffered severe burns and were rushed to Royal Perth Hospital where one man remains in a critical condition.

Inspector Trevor Davis says two children who were playing outside the unit also suffered minor injuries.

"There were two children near the vicinity of the explosion but we don't believe in the unit itself," he said.

It is believed a gas bottle used in the preparations exploded inside the house.

Police say the blast caused about $300,000 damage.

Inspector Jeff Ellis says there is little left of the property.

"Looking through you can see there is significant damage to the roof, it looks like the ceiling has come down and you can see looking through the window that it appears to have been an extensive explosion inside the house," he said.

Neighbour Taleah Collett was sitting outside her house across the road at the time.

"We were all sitting out on the balcony and my friend heard a bit of a pop or a bang and then smoke started coming and there were sirens," she said.

"Then they pulled up in the street and there was quite of a lot of smoke for about ten minutes."

Inspector Davis says the growing number of drug labs in suburban centres is worrying.

"If they are having a clan lab they are from their very nature dangerous, from the chemicals and from the explosions," he said.

Griffith community thanked for drug information

Griffith police said a $20m cannabis haul last week, has sparked members of the public to report more illegal drug activity in the community.

More than 10 000 cannabis plants have now been destroyed following the five day operation that involved 35 local police officers, the SES and RFS.

18 people have been arrested as part of the strike force, including a 14 year old boy found processing cannabis.

Griffith Police Commander, Superintendent Michael Rowan said high profile raids are useful in raising public awareness about organised crime.

"What it creates is an environment where people are comfortable to come to the police and tell us what's going on," he said.

"Interestingly, even post Friday, we had some information that came in and again somebody has been charged, a search warrant was executed over the weekend and cannabis seized and a person involved will be put before the courts for cultivation."

Superintendent Rowan has praised the local community for helping to interrupt the illegal drug trade.

He said the success of the operation makes people more comfortable in reporting illegal activity to the police.

"This sort of thing is not just about the police," he said.

"This is about what the community require and probably their expectation.

"They're our eyes and ears and they're providing the information and really this success last week, whilst it was the police that were out and about and doing the hard yards, it only comes about because of the information that comes to us from the public.

"And I think it's those members of the community that want to live in a better community."

10 people arrested as part of the raid appeared in Wagga Local Court yesterday.

All have been refused bail and will appear next at the Griffith Local Court on March 28.
