Morphine peddling nurse avoids jail

A former nurse who trafficked morphine in Tasmania's north and north-west has avoided jail.

Lynette Christine Felmingham pleaded guilty to trafficking morphine between February and June last year.

The Supreme Court in Hobart heard the former nurse had been prescribed the drug for chronic pain and sold it to a man in the state's north-west.

Police became aware of Felmingham's dealings after intercepting text messages she had sent arranging meetings to deliver the morphine.

The court heard she sold the drug at least eight times, travelling from Hobart to other parts of the state.

Felmingham's lawyer said her client had been struggling financially at the time and was living in a car with her daughter.

Drug operation triggers charges

About 15 people are facing drugs charges after a major investigation in north-west Victoria.

Police say Operation Leakage resulted in 18 search warrants across the Swan Hill and Kerang region.

About 25 police officers were involved in the operation, which has run over the past couple of months.

Swan Hill police Inspector Bob Simpson says the arrests should send a clear message that the trafficking of drugs will not be tolerated in rural and regional areas.

"Look, there will be some charges in relation to trafficking of amphetamines, there will be some firearms that have been detected during the drug searches and that is the bulk of the operation," he said.

"The message is, if they are involved in the illicit drug trade, supplying or trafficking drugs, in the country area, we will eventually find out and you will be charged and dealt with accordingly."

$200,000 cannabis seized after public tip-off - Tumbarumba

Police in the Riverina have seized cannabis worth more than $200,000 in bushland near Tumbarumba.

Acting on a public tip-off, police this week conducted a thorough search of bushland just outside the Tumbarumba township and uncovered four large cannabis crops.

The plants ranged in height of between 12 and 14 feet and had an estimated potential street value in excess of $200,000.

They have now been destroyed.

Sergeant Craig Middleton from Tumbarumba Police said the seized plants were some of the largest he had seen in some time.

“The plants were ready for harvesting and it’s a great result that we were able to seize the plants and stop the drugs hitting the streets,” Sgt Middleton said.

“It is again great to see that members of the community are prepared to approach local police and give us information that we can act upon and get a tremendous result like this,” he said.

Detectives from Albury Local Area Command are continuing their inquiries into the cultivation of the plants.

Dozens charged as police seize hundreds of pills at popular Sydney music festival

Police have charged dozens of revellers after seizing a large quantity of illegal drugs at a popular Sydney music festival.

Approximately 40,000 people attended the Future Music Festival at Randwick Racecourse yesterday (Saturday 12 March).

Police mounted a high-visibility operation targeting anti-social behaviour, alcohol-fuelled crime and illegal drug use and supply both inside and outside the venue.

The operation involved a large police contingent from Central Metropolitan Region, State Crime Command, Alcohol and Licensing Enforcement Command, Dog Squad, Mounted Section and Trail Bike Unit.

Police conducted 341 person searches during the event and seized hundreds of tablets, believed to be illegal drugs, and quantities of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), amphetamine and cannabis.

One man was charged with drug supply after allegedly being found in possession of approximately 500 pills.

He has been held in custody to appear in Parramatta Bail Court today.

Nine others were charged with various offences, including drug supply, offensive behaviour and resisting arrest. They were granted conditional bail ahead of future court appearances.

A further 117 people were issued notices to appear in court at a later date – mostly for drug possession.

“Our presence at the event was to ensure everyone had a great day out in a safe and secure environment and we received support from the event organisers and other agencies,” Eastern Beaches Local Area Commander, Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate, said.

“Overall, the behaviour of the large crowd inside the venue was very good with no major incidents or disturbances.

“However, it is alarming that despite all the warnings about how dangerous recreational drugs can be – especially when mixed with alcohol – we found so many people in possession of them.

“We will continue to mount this type of policing operation to catch those peddling potentially-lethal substances at similar events to make them safer for all festival-goers,” he said.

[NZ] Major Headhunters drug bust

A major drug bust on the Headhunters' Auckland headquarters saw police recover more than $1 million worth of methamphetamine yesterday.

Eight suspected gang members were arrested and appeared in Waitakere District Court charged with drug possession and supply offences.

Court officials refused to reveal anything more about the appearances but the suspects have been ordered to reappear tomorrow. It came just hours after 240 police and Air Force personnel uncovered a "warehouse" full of weapons in a raid on the emerging Red Devils gang in Nelson.

A police spokeswoman said 28 people were arrested, and pipe bombs, motorbikes, shotguns and rifles confiscated.

Police said the operation had dealt a blow to the gang, who are affiliated to the Hells Angels.

Air Force personnel flew police from the North Island to Nelson. The Air Force also put their bomb disposal unit on standby. The spokeswoman said a complex and committed undercover operation helped bust the Red Devils.

"We had one of our own embedded in their organisation. We were listening in to their most intimate conversations," the spokeswoman said.

The raids were said to be unrelated to those on the Auckland Headhunters, though police have been co-ordinating many anti-gang efforts at a national level.

Two suspects appeared in the Nelson District Court on Friday and were bailed. The spokeswoman said these two were "bit-part players".

A further 17 suspects appeared yesterday and were remanded in custody.

The spokeswoman described those arrested as "a motley crew" ranging in age from about 30 to their late 50s.

Police say they are conscious of the fact other aspiring gangsters may fill the void created by the mass arrests, so their focus will "now turn to like-minded groups".

One of those groups are apparent Red Devils allies the Hells Angels, the world's oldest and biggest bikie gang.

Police continued tormenting the Angels yesterday afternoon, shadowing an Angels poker run in the scenic Tasman region. While police appeared pleased with the poker run operation, it was largely a symbolic gesture, with no reported arrests.

Another gang police seem to be watching closely are the Rebel Motorcycle Club, recent arrivals from Australia.

The Rebels' entry into local gang life attracted publicity in January, when Police Minister Judith Collins and a senior detective from the Organised and Financial Crime Agency publicly threatened to annihilate the Rebels.

Police followed up her rhetoric quickly when guns, bikes, cars, drugs, cash and gang patches were seized from the Rebels in raids in February.

This week's Upper South Island raids were bigger still.

The police spokeswoman says these clampdowns are "a clear indication" of hardened police resolve in tackling organised crime.

Top security jails awash with drugs

VICTORIA'S maximum security jails are awash with drugs, alarming new figures reveal.

More than 30 prisoners a week come up positive for drugs or refuse to be tested, documents obtained by the Herald Sun under Freedom of Information show.

As corrections authorities vowed to come down hard on those caught with drugs, prison system insiders say the test results heavily understate the problem behind bars.

The worst results were recorded at maximum security prisons - Port Phillip Prison, the Melbourne Remand Centre and Fulham Prison in Gippsland. The Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, the state's main women's prison, had 123 positive tests and refusals.

There were 1367 failed tests in the year to December, according to the Office of Corrections data.

2Another 265 refused to be tested, regarded in the system as an admission of guilt.

The highest test results are for buprenorphine, known as hillbilly heroin. Some heroin addicts are prescribed the drug but jail sources say it is also traded in a lucrative black market.

Cannabis also figured highly.

One recently released inmate said the testing only partly reflected the level of drug use.

"It'd be maybe 20 per cent of it," he said.

"There's more in there than there is out here - seriously. It's rampant."

The former prisoner said most of the illicit drugs in prisons were brought in at visits.

He said buprenorphine was keenly sought and constantly traded for money and cigarettes.

The former prisoner said there was little hope for many of the prisoners who were going to jail expecting to "get clean".

The volume of drugs meant temptation was never far away, he said.

Authorities have battled for many years to stem the flow of drugs into prison.

The jail narcotics trade, particularly in maximum-security units, has traditionally fuelled violence between groups trying to control it, and endangered vulnerable inmates.

The figures showed the level of positive tests at lower-security jails such as Dhurringile, Beechworth and Langi Kal Kal was low.

A Corrections Victoria spokeswoman said a total of 80,000 random and targeted searches were made on prison visitors and inmates in the past financial year.

The spokeswoman said prisoners and visitors used "a number of deceptive methods" to get drugs into jails and prison authorities were constantly looking for new ways to detect them.

"Any prisoner found to have used drugs faces tough penalties, including loss of privileges such as contact visits or transfer to a more secure unit.

"Matters may also be referred to Victoria Police to consider criminal charges," she said.

Corrections Minister Andrew McIntosh could not be contacted for comment.

Former NSW investigator to fight drugs charges

A jury has been selected for the drug trial of former New South Wales Crime Commission senior investigator, Mark Standen.

The former Crime Commission assistant director has been on remand since June 2008.

He has pleaded not guilty to conspiring to import a substance to manufacture drugs, of supplying pseudoephedrine and perverting the course of justice.

Wearing a shirt and tie he sat in the dock of the Supreme Court, at times looking across at the public gallery, while Justice Bruce James addressed the jury for his trial.

The judge said two to three weeks of the trial will be taken up with the presentation of emails and phone taps.

Justice James warned the six men and six women not to conduct their own investigations into the case or discuss it with anyone outside the jury room.

Earlier a pool of potential jurors was read a witness list by Crown Prosecutor Tim Game SC.

The list includes Australian Federal Police officers and the head of the New South Wales Crime Commission, Phillip Bradley.

The Crown case is expected to open Wednesday.
