Man described in court as major drug supplier

An Adelaide man accused of being a major Darwin drug supplier has been refused bail in the Darwin Magistrates Court.

Ashley Bradbury, 53, is charged with possessing and supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis.

The court heard Bradbury had been under surveillance before Northern Territory police arrested him last week, seizing $70,000 in cash.

The police prosecutor described Bradbury as a major supplier of cannabis to the greater Darwin area.

The prosecutor said he was seen picking up packages from a Darwin transport company and unloading them in Virginia bushland.

His house in Adelaide was also raided where officers seized items used to produce and distribute drugs.

Three of Bradbury's co-accused will appear in court tomorrow on similar charges.

Significant cannabis haul as police target north coast

Six people have been charged with eighteen offences as Operation Unearth Cooloola, which targeted commercial cannabis production on the north coast, came to a close yesterday.

The year-long operation conducted by the State Crime Operations Command, Cultivated Drug Operations Team, with the assistance of Maryborough and Gympie police districts, focused on the Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy National Park, Biggenden and Gympie areas.

During the operation police located and seized 450 cannabis plants from the Cooloola Section along with 750 cannabis plants from a property at Dallarnil via Biggenden.

Yesterday, police executed a search warrant on a property in Gympie where a further 430 plants and seedlings were located and seized.

Acting Detective Superintendent Steve Holahan from the State Crime Operations Command, Drug and Property Crime Group said the operation reflected the work being undertaken by the Service in targeting and dismantling commercial cannabis supply and production networks across Queensland.

“This was a significant haul for the team and a successful outcome for a protracted and extensive operation. I have no doubt these results will leave a dent in the production and supply of cannabis in the north coast and surrounding areas,” Acting Detective Superintendent Holahan said.

A 33-year-old man from the Biggenden area has been charged with producing dangerous drugs, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing things used in the commission of a crime and appeared in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court yesterday.

A 38-year-old East Deep Creek man has been charged with a range of drug offences including two counts of producing dangerous drugs, one count of possessing dangerous drugs, and possession of property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence. He is due to appear in the Gympie Magistrates Court on March 21.

A further four persons have also been charged with related offences.

Investigations are continuing with further arrests expected in coming days.

Girl, 4, taken for drug sale car ride

Sydney police have arrested a man they say has been selling hundreds of thousands of dollars of heroin from his car while a four-year-old girl was in his care.

Police say they have seized guns, more than $500,000 worth of heroin and $300,000 cash after stopping the car yesterday, and subsequent searches on three properties in Sydney's south-west.

The 52-year-old Edensor Park man was stopped on the Great Western Highway at Greystanes yesterday afternoon, and police then searched his home and properties at West Hoxton and Prestons.

The raids allegedly netted two pistols, three stun guns, the cash and heroin as well as stolen tools, methadone and what are believed to be ecstasy tablets.

Police say it appears the girl, who is a relative of the accused, was repeatedly exposed to criminal activities.

Yasi weeds out cannabis farms

CYCLONE Yasi has helped Far Northern police in the fight against drug use and growing, wiping out much of the region's marijuana crops.
The destructive wind which destroyed forest areas has exposed drug crops.
“We would expect that a lot of the cannabis would have been destroyed,” Far Northern Drug Squad Det Sen-Sgt Kevin Goan said.

“The surrounding foliage would no longer be providing cover and concealment to assist the cultivation of the plants.”
Specialised lights used to grow marijuana plants are also believed to have been cut during the storm.

“If anyone were to be engaged in that activity long-term, a loss of power would impact on the success of their enterprise,” Sen-Sgt Goan said.
“We are going to keeping monitoring if there has been any significant impact and try and target any substitute of
supply.”

Although the scale of the damage cannot be determined, Sen-Sgt Goan said one of the biggest impacts to the Far North drug trade came in the 1990s with the seizure of almost 94,000 cannabis plants at Cardwell.
Local mental health services have welcomed the news but warn it will likely be a temporary hiccup in marijuana production and use.

“We would definitely welcome less of it around,” a mental health worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

Like father, like daughter: jail for drug crime

The daughter of former sportsman Reg Spiers has been jailed for drug offences.

Jane Margaret Spiers, 44, pleaded guilty to manufacturing methylamphetamines for sale and personal use at her Adelaide house in 2009.

The District Court heard the laboratory was sophisticated and produced drugs with a street value of $600,000.

It heard Spiers was not the main organiser of the drug manufacturing scheme but had allowed the laboratory to be set up in her home.

The court heard she became addicted to drugs after her father, Reg, got involved in the illicit drug industry after his successful career as an athlete.

He also was convicted of drug offences.

Jane Spiers was sentenced to six years' jail and can seek parole in three years.

Guilty plea over new drug

A 23-year old southern Tasmanian man has pleaded guilty to trafficking a little known drug, that was packaged as bath salts and sent to him from China.

In January 2009 police became aware a new drug was being sold in Hobart called "Israelis".

They started monitoring packages being sent to Mitchell John Campbell, 23, of Howrah.

They discovered he was regularly receiving bags of white powder labelled as bath salts and unfilled capsules from Shanghai.

Police raided his home and discovered a three kilogram bag of methylcathinone and 500 capsules in a range of colours that all contained the illegal drug.

Campbell's lawyer argued his client didn't originally know the drug was illegal and found out about it when he was researching herbal highs on the internet.

The Supreme Court in Hobart heard he was looking to start his own small business and came across a website called Neo-Organic in China

Campbell's lawyer said the company advertised "legal highs" and the naive young man was lured into becoming a wholesaler of mood and energy enhancers

Campbell pleaded guilty to trafficking and will be sentenced next week.

Police put brakes on drug driving

Police say they are alarmed by the number of people found driving under the influence of drugs in central Victoria.

Sixteen people were caught during a four-day operation that finished yesterday, while five drink drivers were also stopped.

Acting Sergeant Kevin Hume-Cook says he hopes the results will stop people from driving after taking drugs.

"These are illicit drugs, so they're illegal drugs and the main drugs that were being tested for was ... cannabis and ... speed or ecstasy," he said.

"The number one thing that people have to be aware of is that these are illegal drugs and people shouldn't be taking them in the first place, let alone jumping behind the wheel of a car and driving."

Nationals back Nimbin anti-drug campaign

A north coast Nationals MP says the counter-culture village of Nimbin must accept the same drug laws as other parts of the state.

Ten people were charged with drug possession, one with supply, and 18 cautions were issued in a weekend drug operation in the village

The Nimbin Hemp Embassy's Michael Balderstone says it was a waste of police time and money.

But the Nationals' MP Thomas George says there is broad community support for the strategy.

"There are crackdowns in areas that have got the same problems in Sydney.

"I certainly give the police my hundred per cent support and I know a large part of the community and the visitors to the Northern Rivers area would fully endorse what is happening."

But Mr George says he is not the driving force behind the crackdown.

"Any representations I have made to police have been a result of what representations have been made to me and I do not apologise for that and I will continue to make those representations."
