Four Spanish nationals have been arrested and charged with importing 300 kilograms of cocaine into Queensland.

The Australian Federal Police says the drugs - which it says have a street value of $78 million - were found in a raid at a Bundaberg marina over the weekend.

The AFP says the seizure was part of raids in Queensland and New South Wales which busted a major drug importation network.

An AFP spokeswoman says officers seized around $2 million in cash after raids in Bundaberg, Sydney and on the Gold Coast.

She says the raids are the result of several months of surveillance.

Officers say further arrests are likely as an international investigation continues.

Police swoop on $500K cannabis crop

Three men have been arrested after police seized a cannabis crop worth more than $500,000 in central western New South Wales.

A police helicopter acting on information from detectives at the Orana local area command discovered the crop near Mendooran on Friday.

Officers say almost 300 plants, with an estimated street value of $592,000, were being grown at the Denmire Road property.

During a search, a number of weapons, including a semi-automatic shotgun and a sawn-off shotgun were found, along with ammunition, electronic equipment and surveillance cameras.

A 65-year-old man and a 24-year-old man have been charged with firearms offences and granted bail to face court in January.

A 69-year-old Mendooran man charged with cultivating a prohibited plant has been refused bail to appear in the Gilgandra Local Court today.

Police seize 300kg of cocaine and $3.5 million cash Read more: http://www.brisbaneti

An international sting has ended with the seizure of 300 kilograms of cocaine in Bundaberg and boxes of cash in Sydney worth upwards of $3.5 million.

Four Spanish nationals have been arrested and Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Kevin Zuccato, the national manager for serious and organised crime, said police believed one of them to be ‘‘very high up’’ in an international syndicate they had investigated since February.

Mr Zuccato said the cocaine has a wholesale value of $78 million, but on the street it would sell for ‘‘much, much more’’.

Police estimated street value to be about $400 a gram, pushing the value of the 300 kilogram haul up to $120 million.

‘‘There is certainly an appetite for cocaine,’’ Mr Zuccato said,

‘‘This shows it doesn’t matter where (criminals) go, or what they do, Australian law enforcement will catch up with them.’’

After the yacht was raided, police also launched weekend raids on a Gold Coast address, where they allegedly found $290,000 in cash, and a Bondi address where they found five boxes of cash that were still being counted. The current count is at about $3.5 million.

The nine-month operation began in February, when the AFP noticed large amounts of money being moved offshore and began a money laundering investigation.

The investigation, code-named Operation Avalon, eventually brought together the AFP, the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, the Queensland Police Service and authorities in Vanuatu.

In September, the ACBPS flagged a yacht called Friday Freedom, moored at Port Vila in Vanuatu and scheduled to sail to Australia. They believed the yacht had connections to a crime syndicate.

Mr Zuccato said Friday Freedom was sailed from Vanuatu to Australia by a 35-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, who arrived in Bundaberg on October 20.

In a move he called ‘‘very patient’’, the yacht sat in the marina for three weeks before their partners in Sydney and Gold Coast made a move.

‘‘An individual from Sydney received some information and decided they were ready to go,’’ Mr Zuccato said.

‘‘They had been communicating with the people on the boat, three weeks is a long time to wait.

‘‘They were very patient.’’

Last Thursday, the 38-year-old man allegedly drove from Sydney to the Gold Coast where he stayed at the residence of a 39-year-old man at Surfers Paradise.

Mr Zuccato said they drove from the Gold Coast to Bundaberg the next morning and boarded the yacht.

The pair had hired a Corolla and a Pajero and allegedly left the boat with about 100 kilograms worth of cocaine in two suitcases.

They loaded the suitcases into the cars and started to drive away.

‘‘That is when the decision was made to move in on them for security reasons,’’ Mr Zuccato said.

Police arrested the two men driving away and the two people on the Friday Freedom before they moved the yacht to a dry dock to be searched.

They allegedly found more cocaine, which had been wrapped in black tape and plastic to keep it dry and stored in the hull of the boat.

Mr Zuccato said police were interviewing the foursome and believed the 38-year-old to be a kingpin in the international crime syndicate.

‘‘This is really only the beginning of investigations,’’ he said.

Police believe the cocaine originated from South America and they are not sure where exactly where it was destined once it was taken off the yacht, but police believed it had no connection to Schoolies Week.

The cocaine will be forensically examined before being burnt in industrial incinerators.

‘‘This operation demonstrates that the AFP, with our international and domestic partners, has the capability, resources and commitment to successfully detect and dismantle the most sophisticated organised crime groups,’’ Mr Zuccato said.

‘‘The AFP seized 796 kilograms of cocaine last financial year, an increase of 103 per cent on the previous year.

‘‘As long as organised crime groups target Australia we will continue our efforts to disrupt their activities and arrest those who seek to bring harm to the Australian community.’’

The four Spanish nationals are scheduled to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court today to face charges relating to the import of a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug.

Drug dealer's appeal centres on disgraced investigator

AS THE former senior Crime Commission investigator Mark Standen is in prison awaiting his sentence, one of the men he helped put behind bars is using Standen's fall from grace to throw doubt on his own conviction.

Gilbert Gedeon was convicted in 2009 of supplying more than two kilograms of cocaine after being caught in a controversial operation involving an informer known only as ''Tom'', later ruled invalid by the High Court.

His appeal, which is expected to be heard by the full bench of the Court of Criminal Appeal next year, will question the credibility of Standen, who gave evidence at Gedeon's trial but has since been convicted of involvement in a drug conspiracy and perverting the course of justice.
Advertisement: Story continues below

Gedeon's lawyers argue their client's offence was only made possible by the illegal operation of the NSW Crime Commission and NSW Police which led to Gedeon's arrest.

''It is clear that, had Mr Standen complied with Commonwealth law, the offence could not have been committed and the evidence could not have been obtained,'' the lawyers say in their submission.

The lawyers are also arguing District Court judge Robyn Tupman made several mistakes during Gedeon's trial in her rulings on the operation which allowed seven kilograms of cocaine to be released onto the streets of which only one kilogram was recovered.

They are also saying the judge should not have prevented Gedeon's lawyers from questioning Standen about his charges and credibility, and that she should have adjourned the trial until after Standen's case.

Standen, who was convicted in August, is due to face a sentencing hearing today. Since his arrest in June 2008, some have raised questions about the cases Standen has been involved in.

While another man caught up in the operation has unsuccessfully appealed against his conviction, Gedeon's lawyers say his case is different.

The case involving Gedeon started in late 2004 when Tom came to the NSW Crime Commission, asked for Standen and said he had information about a cocaine syndicate which he was willing to trade.

Gedeon was arrested after he bought the drug from Tom in two transactions in February and March 2005 and was sentenced to at least 10 years in prison.

Standen gave evidence against him in late 2009 wearing prison greens, and said he considered the operation ''slightly tricky'' and ''adventurous'' but thought the operation was legal.

Gedeon's barrister, Peter Hamill, SC, argues that Standen's credibility is an important factor when deciding whether he acted in good faith. Standen was accused of lying during his trial earlier this year.

But Judge Tupman ruled there was a ''reasonable excuse'' for Standen and his colleagues handling the cocaine and found that the evidence obtained from it was admissible.

She also ruled the risk to the community was ''not high'', even though the High Court had criticised the ''conduct likely to seriously endanger the health or safety'' of the community.

Mr Hamill's submission says: ''A conviction secured by the admission of evidence gathered … is a conviction obtained at too high a price.

''[Judge Tupman] applied the wrong test, unnecessarily excluded relevant evidence … took into account irrelevant evidence and … arrived at a conclusion which was unreasonable.''

Gedeon's lawyers are asking the court to order a retrial, or at least reduce his sentence.

Four Spanish nationals arrested for record 300kg cocaine bust - 14 November 2011

Four Spanish nationals arrested for record 300kg cocaine bust - 14 November 2011

Australian law enforcement agencies have dealt a significant blow to an international organised crime syndicate, arresting four Spanish nationals and seizing 300 kilograms of cocaine from a yacht in Bundaberg, Queensland over the weekend.

Authorities also seized more than $3 million in cash during related search warrants carried out in Bundaberg, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

The investigation involved collaboration between the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Queensland Police Service and assistance from authorities in Vanuatu.

It is believed to be the fifth largest cocaine seizure in Australian history, with the confiscated drugs carrying an estimated value of up to $78 million. It is also the second significant cocaine seizure on a yacht in just over 12 months.

The AFP commenced an investigation, code-named Operation Avalon, early this year based on intelligence regarding an international organised crime syndicate suspected to be involved in money laundering and planning a substantial importation of cocaine into Australia.

In September, Customs and Border Protection through their risk identification assessment processes identified a yacht in September at Port Vila, Vanuatu, with suspected links to the organised crime syndicate and scheduled to travel to Australia.

The yacht, named Friday Freedom, left Vanuatu on 14 October, 2011.

Customs and Border Protection coordinated offshore surveillance of the vessel through the deployment of significant marine and aviation assets. The operation also involved significant assistance from authorities in Vanuatu.

The yacht was crewed by two Spanish nationals, a 35-year-old man and 37-year-old woman. It arrived off the coast of Bundaberg on the evening of Thursday, October 20, 2011.

Police will allege that two other Spanish nationals - a 38-year-old man who resides in Sydney and 39-year-old man who resides on the Gold Coast - travelled from the Gold Coast to Bundaberg on Friday 11 November to meet the boat.

Police arrested the alleged offenders on 11 November when an exchange of approximately 100 kilograms of cocaine took place at the Bundaberg Port.

The four Spanish nationals are scheduled to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court today, to face charges relating to the import of a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug. The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.

Investigations are ongoing and police have not ruled out further arrests.

The drugs were secreted within the hull of the yacht. AFP National Manager for Serious and Organised Crime Kevin Zuccato said it was a highly sophisticated concealment. It was clear the syndicate had demonstrated an understanding of law enforcement methodology and had gone to considerable effort to escape detection.

“This operation demonstrates that the AFP, with our international and domestic partners, has the capability, resources and commitment to successfully detect and dismantle the most sophisticated organised crime groups,” Assistant Commissioner Zuccato said.

“The AFP seized 796 kilograms of cocaine last financial year, an increase of 103 per cent on the previous year.

“As long as organised crime groups target Australia we will continue our efforts to disrupt their activities and arrest those who seek to bring harm to the Australian community.”

Customs and Border Protection National Manager Enforcement Operations, Kaylene Zakharoff, congratulated the officers on the success of such an extensive joint response.

“This Operation highlights the importance of working collaboratively with other agencies at the border to dismantle organised crime syndicates,” Ms Zakharoff said.

“Customs and Border Protection is determined to combat the threat that serious and organised crime poses to the Australian community.”

Eight years for putting body in bin

A MAN who helped dispose of a body in a strip club wheelie bin has been jailed for eight years.

Two men have already been sentenced to life imprisonment over the brutal murder of Kevin Stanley Brack, 47, at a "C-grade'' strip club in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in February 2009.

At the end of the three-week trial in June, a Queensland Supreme Court jury cleared a third man, Patrick Robert Doyle, 47, of Mr Brack's murder.

However, he was found guilty of being an accessory after the fact, following revelations he helped dispose of the body and clean up the club before police could arrive and search for evidence.

His sentence was adjourned until Monday so the court could obtain medical reports.

During the hearing the court was told Mr Brack was killed at Flikkerz Foto and Dance Studio after an argument about poor quality drugs.

He was knocked to the ground and then stabbed in the chest.

The court heard that after the death, Doyle dragged a wheelie bin into the room from downstairs.

He helped place Mr Brack, who had been wrapped in a carpet, inside the bin before taking it back outside.

The body has never been found.

The court heard on Monday that Doyle also helped clean the club, described by prosecutor Danny Boyle as a "C-grade strip club associated with prostitution and drug use'', before police could arrive.

Justice Anthe Philippides described his involvement as "callous'', saying it had caused significant distress to Mr Brack's family, who had never been able to give him a proper burial.

She sentenced Doyle to eight years' jail and made no recommendation for early parole.

He has already served 839 days in pre-sentence custody.

Drug driving charges, Durong

Drug driving charges, Durong

Local police along with officers from the Roadside Drug Testing Unit (RDTU) targeted an event held at the Burrandowan Racecourse near Durong, west of Kingaroy over the weekend.

The rave party came to the attention of police after it was organised by a local man and advertised on Facebook with over 200 people attending the party.

With concerns for road safety, local police tested a total of 37 drivers with 13 people tested positive to the presence of illicit drugs in their systems.

In addition, police charged 19 people with a total 31 drug and related offences. Each person arrested will appear in the Kingaroy Magistrates Court in the coming weeks.

A man was also arrested in the vicinity of the party allegedly in possession of approximately 100 lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) tablets.

Acting Chief Superintendent Andy Morrow from the State Traffic Support Branch, expressed concern that so many of the drivers tested had returned positive results.

“I’m disappointed by the irresponsibility of this large number of drivers who risked their own safety and the safety of others on the road by driving with dangerous, illicit drugs in their systems,” he said.

Acting Chief Superintendent Morrow praised the efforts of the local police and the RDTU officers for removing people from the roads people who might otherwise have become involved in potentially serious or fatal road crashes.

“This incident sends a signal that the police monitor social networking sites, and where there is a possibility that illicit drug use and driving will be combined, the Random Drug Testing Unit will be right around the corner.”
