Wow! thanks Mick, if I've ever a spare month or so... ;) Seriously though, certainly a lot I haven't seen that should make good reading.

Wow - there's a lot of winter nights' reading options contained within this thread... :)

I ordered Candy Machine and another South-American centric book recently, which I've yet to start reading... which I guess are more about the political economy of cocaine in that region of the world... be good to see more Aus-centric reads listed though :)

It's light reading compared to a lot of what people are suggesting, but another BLer recommended Mr Nasty to me and I couldn't put it down.

It's written by a british bloke and basically chronicles his 2 decades or so as a user/addict/dealer/distributer, from running a crew selling pills/tabs in the birth of the rave scene in 1980's London, getting involved in the coke scene in America, sampling various chemicals in Asia, developing a full blown heroin addiction and finally winding up in Sydney around the turn of the century just as coke takes off.

I'm not sure what's so captivating about it. He's hardly a literary genius and leaves a lot of things out, but it's just incredibly captivating following 15 or 20 years of drug fuelled shenanigans, and you can't help but like the protagonist even if he is a bit of a dick at times. I nearly ploughed through the whole thing in one sitting, once I got started I couldn't put it down.

^Now... i'm going to look this book up, and buy it.

I haven't read a book in nearly 10 years. At least 8 anyway.

Last book I read was a true story about a melbourne undercover beat cop, who dressed up as a bum on smith st, to bust heroin dealers at the payphone. lol.. fucked if i remember the title. But i read it all in a day, and couldn't put the book down i was so captivated.

If anyone knows the title of this book - do post it.

^ The book you are referring to may be 'The Street'? I lent that one to another bluelighter recently about a plainclothes copper in St Kilda in the 80's, he dresses up as a bum and does 'buy busts' and shit.

Crankit knows how to sell a book :p Popular auction website here I come.

On the subject of Mr Nasty (which was a good read) got told a while ago that there is a book called Mr Nice with a similar theme and apparently better but have never seen it.

Can also add: :)

Dopeland John Birmingham (stories from pot smokers around oz)
High Society Ben Elton (fictional story about drug legalisation)
Twek Nic Shelf (true addiction story/biography)
Chemical Cowboys Lisa Sweetingham (Ecstasy trafficking true story)
Reefer Men Tony Thompson (True story about drug importers)
Tripping An Anthology Of True Life Psychedelic Adventures Charles Hayes
When The Impossible Happens Stanislav Grof

Dopeland John Birmingham (stories from pot smokers around oz)

The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco by John Birmingham is definitely recommended reading for anyone who has ever share-housed in Australia or been partial to bucket bongs.

The book of "He died with a felafel in his hand" is good as well. Only the book though - the movie is average.

Hallucinogens: A reader - Charles Grob

Has contributions from a plethora of interesting people like McKenna, Hofmann and a bunch of others. Awesome read

Outstanding thread topic, Mr. Ibis, and a welter of worthy titles to delve into. Weed enthusiasts might also look for Lawrence Cherniak's Great Books of Hashish, and, Great Books of Cannabis. He freelanced for High Times for a time and has some incisive stories to compliment the pics from his travels. Nice coffee table books.

I own a copy Pihkal had no idea it was banned. Also own Uncle Festers 'Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture Sixth Edition with Recipes for MDA, Ecstacy, and other Psychedelic Amphetamines'.
Surly that would be a banned import too. Could any legal issues arise if they were to be found by LE?

^Likely they'd try to push some conspiracy charges or intent charges?

Depends where you obtained them, what else they found a long with them. I think in court it'd be easy to get away with having the books detained and destroyed with no charge so long as you weren't found with anything else that would show you were likely trying to cook drugs.
