Police appeal for information about shipping container involved in record drug haul -

Police appeal for information about shipping container involved in record drug haul - Strike Force Garner

*** Editors note: Footage and still images of police removing drugs from a shipping container in Bathurst, NSW, can be obtained by calling the Police Media Unit on (02) 8263 6100. These are NOT fresh; they are the same footage and images released in relation to SF Garner in December 2011. There are also close-up images of drugs seized from the containers. ***

Drug Squad detectives are appealing for information abut a shipping container that they believe contains illicit drugs imported from China.

Since December 2011, officers attached to Strike Force Garner have been investigating a syndicate importing pseudoephedrine and other drugs concealed in shipping containers.

The drugs were packed into rectangular metal boxes that investigators believe to be tea canisters. They were then concealed inside the joinery of the shipping crates.

It appears the syndicate somehow lost track of the containers, which were emptied of their legitimate cargo and sold as storage units to unsuspecting businesses and farms across the state – with the drugs still inside.

To date, investigators have seized drugs from 53 containers in 22 locations across NSW. This includes four that have been found since 1 January, 2012. (For a full list, see “Strike Force Garner Facts and Figures” at the end of this media release.)

From those containers, detectives have seized about 540kg of pseudoephedrine – a record amount for NSW Police. They estimate this would be enough to make methylamphetamine, or "ice", with an estimated street value of about $150 million.

Police have also confiscated almost 60kg of “ice” valued at about $40 million, and 15kg of heroin with a street value of more than $7.5 million.

Strike Force Garner detectives believe they have now located all but one of the containers involved.

“Our investigations indicate the outstanding container was sold to an individual or business on the Far South Coast of NSW,” Acting Commander of the State Crime Command’s Drug Squad, Detective Acting Superintendent Steve Patton, said.

“It appears to have changed ownership a few times since, but we believe there’s a good chance the container is still in that region, and we would like to hear from anyone with information about it,” Det Acting Supt Patton said.

“As with all the containers we’ve located so far, it is highly likely the owner has no idea that it contains illegal drugs.”

Investigators were first alerted to the drug importation in early December 2011, when the owner of a Chipping Norton shipping-container business reported a container he’d purchased appeared to have been tampered with.

On December 7, detectives attended that location and found 45kg of pseudoephedrine secreted in three shipping containers.

Investigators have since been working closely with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service to track down other affected containers across the state. They have also been working with Australian Federal Police.

Anyone with information that may assist detectives can share it anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Strike Forcer Garner comprises detectives from the State Crime Command’s Drug Squad and Liverpool Local Area Command.

Two arrested after illegal firearms, drugs and cash seized - Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad

Two people have been arrested and police have seized illegal firearms, drugs and cash during a Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad (MEOCS) operation in Sydney's west.

Officers from MEOCS have been conducting investigations into illegal firearms and illicit drug supply and executed a search warrant on a unit at Campbell Street, Parramatta, about 2.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 18 January 2012).

Upon arrival at the unit complex, officers observed a sophisticated home surveillance set-up in the common area which was linked to one of the units. No-one was home at the time and officers forced entry to the unit.

A vehicle containing two men arrived a short time later, with officers locating a semi-automatic pistol and cash in the car. A 23-year-old man was placed under arrest. A second vehicle then arrived with police arresting a 19-year-old woman after more than 20 cannabis deals and cash were located in the car.

The man and woman were taken to Parramatta Police Station.

During a search of the unit, officers located a shortened rifle, a shotgun, ammunition, cash, numerous mobile phones and drug paraphernalia. Also seized were about 300 cannabis deals, which police believe had been prepared for supply, about 30 grams of what is believed to be ‘Ice’ and almost half a kilogram of an unidentified white powder. The drugs will be forensically-examined and the firearms will undergo ballistic testing.

The man was charged with three counts of supply prohibited drug, deal with the proceeds of crime and 11 firearms offences. He was refused bail to face Parramatta Local Court today.

The woman was charged with supply prohibited drug (cannabis) and deal with the proceeds of crime. She was granted conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court.

MEOCS officers anticipate laying further charges.

17 charged as prison drug ring smashed

South Australian police have broken a major drug ring operating at Mobilong Prison in Murray Bridge.

Seventeen people, including three prisoners, have been charged with drug offences or introducing contraband into the prison.

Police seized 15 grams of methamphetamine and 12 grams of heroin in the operation.

Most of those charged are from Adelaide's northern suburbs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Fielke says the investigation took three months.

"Contraband was being introduced into the prison by means of visitors at visit sessions, the utilisation of outside work gangs at the prison to collect the contraband that was delivered to pre-arranged locations," he said.

"We also discovered at one stage contraband being introduced by people hitting tennis balls or firing arrows over the perimeter fence."

Police say mobile phones smuggled into the prison were used to arrange the drug trafficking.

Police also seized cannabis, prescription drugs, tattoo guns and an electronic game console and drink can that had been used to conceal the drugs.

The three charged Mobilong inmates have been moved to Yatala Labour Prison.

Transnational drug syndicate smashed, five arrested

Transnational drug syndicate smashed, five arrested

Australian and Canadian law-enforcement agencies have smashed an international drug syndicate today, arresting five men and seizing more than $8 million worth of illicit drugs.

A 27-year-old man from The Entrance, 54-year-old Narara man, 24-year-old Fairfield man, 54-year-old Killarney Vale man and a 27-year-old Yattalunga man have been charged with offences relating to the importation, possession and supply of a border controlled drug.

The men are scheduled to appear in Gosford and Wyong Courts today.

The operation, code-named Operation Castleford, began on 3 January 2012 after the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Australian Customs and Border Protection received advice from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that it had detected 6.1 kilograms of cocaine, 12.3 kilograms of MDMA and nearly two kilograms of methamphetamine concealed within a commercial oven shipment consignment in Vancouver, destined for Australia.

Working cooperatively with the CBSA, the AFP in conjunction with the Joint Organised Crime Group (JOCG) monitored the cargo’s arrival into Sydney Airport on 7 January 2012 and its delivery to locations in The Entrance and Gosford.

The JOCG unites the AFP, NSW Police, Australian Customs and Border Protection, Australian Crime Commission and NSW Crime Commission in a joint taskforce targeting organised crime.

Investigators executed eight search warrants at residential addresses in The Entrance and Gosford yesterday, where the men were subsequently arrested.

Further evidence was seized including small amounts of narcotics, $17,900 in cash and a large number of weapons including throwing knives and one taser.

Officers conducted two follow-up search warrants in the area today. Investigations are continuing and police have not ruled out further arrests.

Canada Border Services Agency Regional Director General Rosyln MacVicar said the success of this complex international operation required the cooperation of a variety of law enforcement agencies.

“We share a common goal to protect our citizens by ensuring that these illegal and dangerous drugs never hit the streets. Through an integrated approach to border management and security, criminal organisations now face the scrutiny of law enforcement throughout the world. The CBSA is proud of the contribution its officers have made and is pleased with this successful outcome,” Director General Rosyln MacVicar said.

AFP Manager Crime Operations Peter Sykora said this operation is a successful result for the AFP, JOCG, Australian Customs and CBSA.

“This is yet another operation that shows the AFP and its domestic and international partner agencies are united in their commitment to combating organised crime and have the capability to target and shut down transnational crime syndicates,” Commander Sykora said.

Customs and Border Protection acting National Director Cargo, David Leonard congratulated the officers on the success of such an extensive joint response.

Acting Director of NSW Police Force's Organised Crime Directorate Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis said today's arrests demonstrate the importance of targeted joint efforts between NSW Police and other agencies committed to reducing organised crime.

"We will continue working with our national and transnational law-enforcement partners to stem the flow of prohibited drugs onto NSW streets," Detective Superintendent Katsogiannis said.

Four of the men have been charged with offences relating to the importation and attempt to possess a border controlled drug contrary to the Criminal Code 1995.

The 27-year-old has been charged with a state based offence for supplying a prohibited drug, contrary to section 23 of the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985 (NSW).

The maximum penalty for these offences is life imprisonment or a $825,000 fine.

Police seize $7.5 million cannabis during Cannabis Eradication Program - Richmond LAC

Police have seized $7.5 million worth of cannabis in Richmond Local Area Command during the second group of raids in the 2011-2012 Cannabis Eradication Program.

Strike Force Hyperion comprises detectives from the Drug Squad’s Cannabis Team, with assistance from the NSW Police Air Wing, Police Dog Unit, Radio Electronics Unit and officers from Richmond Local Area Command.

During the past week, Strike Force Hyperion officers targeted more than 60 cannabis crop sites throughout Richmond Local Area Command, including Kippenduff, Rappville, Clearfield, Busby Flat, Mummulgum, Bulldog, Drake, Nimbin, Blue Knob, Kyogle and Tabulam.

A total of 3734 plants were located and seized by police during the operation.

The total estimated potential street value of the plants seized during the past five days is $7.5 million. All plants seized by police have been now been destroyed.

The Cannabis Eradication Program has been running since the mid 1980s with the NSW Police Force preventing almost $240 million worth of cannabis reaching NSW streets.

As in previous years, the 2011-2012 operation will see police conduct a number of similar raids over the next few months in an ongoing effort to target cannabis cultivation.

Acting Commander of the State Crime Command’s Drug Squad, Detective Acting Superintendent Steve Patton, said the Cannabis Eradication Program aims to disrupt the cannabis supply chain in NSW by targeting the source.

“Illegal cannabis growers choose their growing locations based on the mistaken belief that police won’t find them,” Det Acting Supt Patton said.

“However, as we prove with this program every year, we have the resources to find these crops and put a dent in the cannabis market.”

Love, cannabis and speed are rocker Altiyan Child's only drugs

Love, cannabis and speed are rocker Altiyan Child's only drugs

EMBATTLED rocker Altiyan Childs has been convicted of driving under the influence of methamphetamine and cannabis, outraging fans he has long told: "My only drug is love."

Capping off a disastrous 12 months, the eccentric X Factor winner pleaded guilty in Taree Local Court this week to having both drugs in his system while driving a car north on the Pacific Highway.

The 36-year-old reportedly admitted to police that he had smoked a "joint laced with MDMA" at a party in Bexley, in Sydney's south, the night before he was pulled over for a roadside breath test in Coolongolook, near Forster, on November 8 last year.

Just three weeks later Childs walked the ARIA Awards red carpet and accepted the award for Highest Selling Album of 2011.

Recommended Coverage

Altiyan Childs
Childs - real name Altijan Juric - yesterday said it was a "very rare thing" for him to be caught up with drugs but that he was trying to relax after a troubled year.

"My romantic relationship with the world is constantly being challenged, but I am now ready for that," he said. Childs denied rumours he has split with 19-year-old girlfriend Nikki Kingston, who he met on Facebook.

"We are madly in love and while nothing has happened yet, I'm sure she is the one I will be marrying," he said.

Childs - who promised to release a new album called Twenty Twelve - was fined $600 plus court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

While the automatic penalty is a 12-month disqualification, magistrate Shaughan McCosker chose to reduce the period, saying Childs' driving showed no aggravating factors.

His followers have not been so kind, branding Childs a liar.

"He's not the person I thought he was - he's going to lose a lot of people over this," said one diehard fan.

Childs is a protege of Ronan Keating, who has spoken out about how his X Factor contender had "pissed" away his opportunities: "He was given everything on a plate and I've watched a lot of these shows ... and 90 per cent of the contestants have pissed it all away."

It's not the first time Childs has been embroiled in a criminal offence, having been convicted in 2008 on charges of mid-range drink driving, resisting or hindering police and proceeding through a red/yellow traffic light.

In February last year he said he was bashed by four "haters" following a gig in Hobart on the same night he was alleged to have trashed a hotel room.

He then appeared on Today Tonight saying he was broke, infected with lice and would have been better off keeping his job as a forklift driver, but that his love for Kingston had saved him.

Not long after that his then-manager Steve Yankuloff was charged with eight weapons offences following a raid on his Ramsgate home, which Childs had moved out of only days earlier. Childs was not charged with any offences in relation to the raid.

Yankuloff will appear in court this month.

HUGE DRUG CACHE: Police inspect more than 3.8 million speed pills and 71kg of crystal methamphetamine worth more than one billion baht seized in a raid on a house in Pathum Thani’s Thanyaburi district yesterday. PHOTO: RATTASEEMA PONGSAN

Police seized a large haul of speed pills and crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice, worth more than one billion baht during a raid on a house in Pathum Thani's Thanyaburi district.
Police obtained a search warrant from the Thanyaburi court and yesterday raided a two-storey house at the Sammakorn housing estate on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road as part of an investigation that began on Friday into the alleged use of a fake vehicle licence plate.

The house belongs to actress Jarinya Hannarong but she rents it out to tenants.

Jarinya said she had nothing to do with the case and complained that the disclosure of her name could damage her reputation.

Police found 3,864,000 methamphetamine pills and 71kg of crystal methamphetamine hidden in a small room under a staircase, said Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit Thoopkrachang, acting chief of Provincial Police Region 1.

No one was at home when police arrived. The drugs have an estimated street value of over one billion baht.

Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit said the case began after a man, whose name was not disclosed, spotted a white Toyota Camry car bearing the same licence plate number as his car and alerted highway police to intercept it.

The man also said he had previously received a speeding ticket mailed to him from Lampang police despite the fact he had never been to the northern province. This prompted him to suspect misuse of his licence plate number.

The complainant, who also owns a white Toyota Camry, gave chase to the suspicious car, which was later found in a roadside ditch near a bus terminal in Khlong Luang district.

Police said the driver, identified as Nipon Kanchart, managed to escape after fleeing police at high speed and going off the road. Police said they found 10g of ice in his car.

Further investigation led police to search a condominium unit belonging to Jeerarat Intharat, 25, Mr Nipon's girlfriend, in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district.

Officers discovered 42g of ice in the room. They also found documents related to the renting of a house in the Sammakorn housing estate, leading to the subsequent police raid and discovery of the huge drug haul.

Meanwhile, in Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district, two drug smugglers were shot dead in a clash with paramilitary rangers of the Third Army's Pha Muang Task Force on Friday night.

The gunfight took place on a mountain range near Ban Huay San, about 500m from the Thailand-Myanmar border.

The rangers were patrolling the area when they met a group of six people walking from Muang Yon in Myanmar, opposite Mae Ai district.

After the gunfight, which lasted about 30 minutes, the rangers cleared the area and found the dead bodies of two drug ring members, one rifle, three bags containing 100,000 methamphetamine pills, more than 10kg of ice and heroin.

Col Pairote Yawincharn , a patrol unit leader, believed the armed group of smugglers belonged to the Red Wa in Myanmar's Shan state.

Paramilitary rangers cleared the battlefield and found the dead bodies of two drug-ring members, one AK47 assault rifle, 100,000 methamphetamine pills and more than 10 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine or “ya ice”.

Police pleased with crowd’s behaviour

Police pleased with crowd’s behaviour

Police were generally pleased with crowd behavior at this year’s Big Day Out music festival that was held last night.

Police arrested 16 people on a total of 28 charges. In addition 41 people were issued with notices to appear with a total of 52 charges, 14 people were issued with infringement notices for public nuisance offences, 63 people were evicted from the venue.

A total of 68 people were issued with liquor infringement notices. Many of these people were given $500 fines for breaching conditions of entry to the licensed venue and bringing in alcohol.

Police utilised passive drug detection dogs at the entrance to the venue, and over 30,000 people passed through the gates.

Of note was the arrest of a 24-year-old man in possession of 40 capsules alleged to be MDMA and a small amount of Cannabis. The man was charged with 8 offences of supply a dangerous drug and one count of possession of a dangerous drug.

Superintendent Paul Ziebarth of the Gold Coast District said he was pleased to see the early intervention and high visibility policing, including drug detection dogs, contributed to an overall reduction in intoxication levels and associated disturbances.

“Those people interfering with others enjoyment of the event were swiftly evicted to allow people to enjoy the event in a safe environment. It was a costly way to end the day for many of the evictees who forfeited their entry fee and also copped a $400 on the spot fine,” Superintendant Ziebarth said.
