“THE ASSEMBLY”
THE ROUGH, ALMOST EXPERIMENTAL DRAFT

BY

EDWARD WASHINGTON
[email protected]

FADE IN:

EXT. SCHOOL - MORNING

SUPER: "ESQUIRE MIDDLE SCHOOL"

A larger than normal but otherwise - typical looking middle school.

Three police cars calmly enter the facility.

NARRATOR

I remember that day - won't ever forget it, either.
The day it all changed.

INT. CLASSROOM - MORNING

The students sit, some focused, others aren't as MS. BAULMAN addresses the class.

MS. BAULMAN, 50, holds a mug of coffee and wipes a coffee ring from around her lips.

MS. BAULMAN

I don't -specifically- know what the topic of the
assembly is . . .

She shrugs her shoulders.

MS. BAULMAN

I just know it's about enriching student life . . .

A nerdy student raises her hand.

MS. BAULMAN

Charmaine?

CHARMAINE

Are we going to be all the way in the back, again?
Last time --

MS. BAULMAN

No, no, no. I brought that up and this time - we get
the front - first row.

CHARMAINE

Oh, okay.

MS. BAULMAN

So, there should be no reason . . . non whatsoever . .
. for any of us, not to be paying attention and on our
best behavior.

She takes a sip of coffee.

Now, before we leave, I'm going to quickly go over
the rules, OK? You all know them but I don't want
to hear any excuses, OK?

She notices two students, JOEY and CLOPPER, typical looking 'troublemakers',
whispering.

MS. BAULMAN

Joey and Clopper! You two definitely outta listen.

INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY - MORNING

The students follow Ms. Baulman, through the big school, to the auditorium in a single-
filed line. Joey and Clopper at the end of the line lightly horsing around.

MS. BAULMAN (V.O.)

You get away from the classroom setting and
bookwork so it's a privilege to be at this or any
assembly. Many of you are too young to look at it
like this but coordinators, school officials and
volunteers spend many hours planning these
therefore I expect you to show respect and
appreciation for their efforts.

Beat.

MS. BAULMAN

We'll go promptly to our designated seating area,
which is, this time, the front row, and sit - there will
be no loitering or visiting of your friends in other
areas. So I don't want to see that. Remain seated
until we're dismissed. No one leaves prior to the
assemblies completion unless it's an emergency,

bathroom, whatever, unless you get authorization -
a pass from me.

Beat.

MS. BAULMAN

And of course no heckling, booing, screaming or
shouting.

The class reaches the gym and follows the teacher inside.

INT. SCHOOL - GYM - MORNING

Title: "8:00 AM"

The large gym is setup, auditorium style for the assembly.

Fold out chairs are setup in rows stretching to the back of the gym.

An area - portion of the gym, right before the first row is set-up - designated for the
speaker(s) with a microphone and podium.

Baulman's class, the first to enter, moves in and fills up their assigned (front) row.

MS. BAULMAN

Well class, looks like this time, we're going to get a
good view - right upfront of all the action.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN ON:

INT. SCHOOL - GYM - MORNING

SUPER: 8:10 AM

Baulmans class, seated and socializing for nothing has started yet. Baulman is at the end
of their row, grading papers.

Joey and Clopper are sitting in the middle of the fist row. They look behind them and see
the auditorium fill up as other teachers lead their classes in.

They turn around facing the microphone and podium that's right before them - literally a
few feet away.

JOEY

I think this thing starts at 8:15. But hey, the longer
it takes to start - the more time we get out of class.

CLOPPER

Right...but why our class gatta be all upfront? Shit, I
didn't mind the back.

JOEY

Yeah, we're a little, too close...

Beat.

CLOPPER

We've been sitting here, for how long? Like 15
minutes now and this joint ain't even started.

JOEY

Peoples are still coming in, man. This isn't for just
us 8th graders...hell...their bringing the whole
school in. I wonder what this assembly is for...

CLOPPER

Whatever it is, it's going to be gay...like always. I
wanna go to sleep but man...but these speakers
going be all up in our face. Actually, I really
wanna...

Beat.

JOEY

Wanna what?

Clopper smiles.

JOEY

What, man?!

Clopper looks around then pats his hoody pocket. The sound of a plastic bag is emitted.

Joey smiles and gets excited.

JOEY

Nah! Ha-ha, so you got it, already?

CLOPPER

What do you think?

JOEY

Well obviously - but I though, you were going to
cop at the end of the day?

CLOPPER

Why wait?

JOEY

True. True.

CLOPPER

Now, if you'll excuse me - I'm going to the
bathroom...feel free to meet me in there.

Before Joey can reply, Clopper gets up and walks to the teacher. Joey jealously watches.

MS. BAULMAN

Clopper?

CLOPPER

(Anxiously)

I need to use the restroom. I know this will
probably start any minute but I really don’t think I
can hold it in - can I go to the bathroom ... you
know ... before this does start?

MS. BAULMAN

Mr. Jones . . .

She takes out a pad and writes him a pass.

MS. BAULMAN

I don't feel I should be letting you go, but if it's an
emergency - what can I do? I don't expect you to
take all day though.

CLOPPER

Mucho gracious.

He leaves. Thinking hard - Joey watches, smacking his lips out of jealousy.

JOEY (V.O.)

(To himself)

Man...She isn't going to let me out of here when
he’s gone too - Clopper knows this, he's trying to
piss me off and rub it in ... Shit, it's worth a try . . .

Joey gets up and approaches the teacher who has just resumed grading the paperwork on
her lap.

JOEY

Excuse me, Mrs. Baulman....

MS. BAULMAN

Joey - what do you need? Don't worry this will be
starting any minute, now.

JOEY

No, no, it's not that. Can, can I get a drink?

MS. BAULMAN

I don't think so. Not until your buddy comes
back...actually you can wait until the assembly is
over.

Joey thinking fast comes up with a reply while faking a hiccup.

JOEY

No, come on, Ms. Baulman. I got the hiccups - the
water fountains it's just right outside these doors.

MS. BAULMAN

Hurry!

Joey waits for his pass then leaves as he sees the last of the auditorium filling up.

INT. SCHOOL - BATHROOM - STALL - MORNING

Sitting in the stall, on the toilet (seat down) - is Clopper, hood on his head. He has a bag
- an oz of high-grade marijuana, positioned on his lap. He is in the process of breaking
up some buds and stuffs a little pipe he has with him.

He hears the outer door open, Clopper freezes and listens. The second door opens as
someone enters. Still listening, growing more fearful as he doesn't hear the person using
the toilet. There is long and major uncomfortable silence. Clooper proceeds to look
through the crack (between the door and stall) to see who’s joined him in the bathroom.

The face of Joey appears - looking right back at him.

JOEY

Boo!

CLOPPER

Ah, you little bitch! I see you made it, didn't think
she'd let you out...

JOEY

Man, I convinced her, you think I'm going to let you
have all the fun?

CLOPPER

'Suppose not. Yeah man, I couldn't wait till end of
the day. I been fienin' since I ran out, after school
yesterday.

JOEY

Yeah, no worries. But I only got a pass to get a
drink and she wants me back on the zap.

CLOPPER

And?

JOEY

And? I don't have much time, man. Can I first dibs?
I know it's your shit and all, but c'mon.

CLOPPER

Mann.

JOEY

I beat the odds and got my ass here, so don't make
me go back, late and sober.

CLOPPER

Fine, since I can always say I was taking a long shit.

CLICK, the stall unlocks and CLOPPER exits. He puts bag in his hoody pocket and
hands JOEY the packed pipe, patting him on the back.

CLOPPER

Be easy - it's really some fire.

JOEY, excited walks into the stall, locks door.

CLOPPER heads for the door. Looking at all the cigarette butts all over the floor.

CLOPPER (V.O.)

(To himself)

Damn smokers. Least' they help create a smokeable
atmosphere in dis school'.

CLOPPER

And don't take all damn day!

CLICK. CLICK. The sound of a lighter.

JOEY (O.S.)

Just go! Go! Look out!

Clopper exits the bathroom, with (through) the double doors.

INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY - MORNING

Clopper walks the empty hallway, to a nearby water fountain.

He sips a drink while scanning the empty hallways, out the lookout for school officials of
authority.

He sees none.

CLOPPER

Damn assembly. Front row. Least I'm high. This'll
be interesting, for shore. Joey's punk ass better
hurry up and get back . . . me too for that matter.
His time's up.

Clopper takes another 'quick sip' of water and heads back to the bathroom.

Enters.

INT. SCHOOL - BATHROOM - MORNING

Clopper enters.

Slip screen.

Clopper is in one frame, looking at himself, slightly grooming in the mirror. Tapping his
fingers in a 'patient rhythm' on the sink.

Joey is in the other, in the stall inhaling smoke - holding the pipe. Looking stoned.

CLOPPER

Come on, man. We both gatta get back -- front row
-- remember . . . Hurry up!

JOEY

Here...

Joey inhales into the stall as he opens the door.

He passes the 'equipment' over to Clopper as he pulls out a spray bottle and before a
mirror/sink, sprays himself down in this mistful spray.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - HALLWAY - MORNING

Joey is sipping water, he stop as he hears shoes tapping the ground, echoing in the
hallway, walking in at a constant pace and comming his way.

He removes his hall pass as he takes another sip.

He wipes his mouth, looks up to see MR. HATCHETT. Dressed in a 'Tarintino' styled
black and white suit - accompanying a walkie-talkie.

MR. HATCHETT

And why aren't you at the assembly - young man?

JOEY

I got a pass -

MR. HATCHETT

And?

JOEY

I had... I had the hiccups, got up, asked my teacher
for a pass, leaft the gym and got, you saw, got, got a
. . . drink.

MR. HATCHETT

Let me see your pass.

Joey hands him the pass, fearlessly.

Hatchett examines it.

MR. HATCHETT

Seems you've been taking your jolly ol' time.
You've been gone quite a while for just a drink . . .
and what's that smell?

Hatchett sniffs.

Spilt screen for a few seconds.

Clopper is in the stall, blowing smoke.

Remove screen.

Joey grows nervous.

JOEY

I don't know . . . listen. Hiccups seem to be gone
and I'm headed back, k?

MR. HATCHETT

That seems best. Here you go. Where is that smell .
. . smell . . . coming from, that the, that the
bathroom?

Hatchetts hands him back his pass while sniffing and growing interested in this smell.

Joey knows what it is and gulps and he purposly shifts Hatchetts attention back to him.

JOEY

Sir... sir. I'm new here, and kinda of lost, can you
help me back to the gym... auditormim or whatever
that place is where the aseembly is happening?

MR. HATCHETT

Yes. Yes I will. I don't understand why you
stumbled all the way done here, when there's a
water fountain right outside, where you came from.

JOEY

Hall was crowded, I didn't even see it... I just wanna
get back... before it stars and my teacher gens' to get
suspicious.

MR. HATCHETT

Follow me and learn from this . . .

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - GYM - MORNING

The assembly has started. The lights are dim. with an exception on the podium and space
in the front.

The principle is talkig behind the podium, light on him.

Quiet audience.

Suddenly. Door opens and Joey enters.

Walking carefully and hunchedbacked, he passes his teacher and takes a seat in the front
row.

The principle eyes him and begins talking.

JOEY

That was embarssing... now what's this bastard got
to say . . .

JOEY's POV.

ZOOM in on the principle as he begins to talk.

PRINCIPLE

Now -- drugs are a problem everywhere... Not just
at this school - so parents, students, don't think this
is anything personal. We are trying to keep kids off
these drugs and direct them drug-free.

CUT TO:

PRINCIPLE

So this assembly will introduce and educate the
student, parents and faculty about law enforcement
K9 teams and our new proactive approach to a
problem found in all schools. This assembly will be
around 45 minutes or so, it realy depends on the
amout of questions during the, from the student
body, during the process of the assembly. We uh,
we encourage qustions. And I hear the law
enforment here today, the K9 teams will also at
some point give a quick demonstration as to how
the K9 teams work...

The students cheer as the principle steps down.

Zoom in on Joey whose hands are on his face, home-alone style, with a look of fear on
his face.

JOEY

This, this can't be happening.

He looks to his left as he sees a couple officers standing, along the wall and parents as
well, ones who couldn't land a seat. The door behind these officers, an exit, opens up and
a lady officer enters with a K9 dog. They approach the podium.

CUT TO:

INT. SCHOOL - GYM - MORNING

OFFICER

Remember, K9's are not used to search
people/students. Law Enforcement does not
condone this.

Beat.

OFFICER

K9's are not brought in or used for Intimidation.

Beat.

OFFICER

K9's are not a total answer or solution for drug
problems.

Beat.

OFFICER

K9's are one part of the multifaceted answer and are
in fact proactive when used in schools in a
professional and positive manner on a regular basis
in a non disruptive manner.

Beat.

OFFICER

Students have a "right" to attend and learn in a safe,
drug free school.

Beat.

OFFICER

Schools are not and cannot be a safe haven for drug
users and dealers.

Beat.

OFFICER

And finally -- K9's are not used to search
people/students. Law Enforcement does not
condone this.

[SCRIPT NOTE: Roughly something along these lines will happen….I will have it much
more elaborated in final draft, of course.]

Suddenly Clopper's POV.

He enters the dim auditorium and the door slams behind him as he unexpectedly seems
cops along the wall and a woman office with a drug dog talking at the podium.

Everyone looks at him.

High and nervous he proceeds to his seat as Mrs. Bauman looks at him with a sinsiter
look as he seats.

Clopper resonds to her face with a nervous, 'I'm sorry' smile.

The officer eyes him and resumes.

Joey elbows him and clooper and Joey exchange a look of worry as they resume
watching the officer, espcially the drug K9 dog.

Suddenly the dog walks towards Clopper and does a K9 drug sniff, on its own.
