The "American" parts of BL

Lol.

League of Gentlemen is immense and was quite fond of Dark Place etc.

"Nine Maverick bars. And you say this is nothing?"

"Why you do this to me, Richie? Why you do this to me!?"

LOG brings back fond memories of early teenage hood. I used to fucking worship that show. I thought Psychoville was pretty badass as well. Mark Gatiss did a great job in the writing of Sherlock too.

Loved this as well, though not quite as much as LOG. Still, a very cool show. Did you ever watch Look Around You with Peter Serafinowicz? Similar vibe to Dark place but a spoof on early 80's educational films instead.

I hated the league of gentlemen, maybe that was just me, but it didn't really make me laugh at all.

Yeah, LOG is like Marmite for most people. Very atypical humour and quite surreal. <3

Whilst we may still have a pet American or two around and about the place I have a question that's been bugging me for years (in a fairly minor way admittedly) - y'know how US folks tend to change UK spellings and phrases just a tiny bit for no obvious reason? Fair enough I spose - bit of national teenangst trying to not be so like their parent nation, I presume. There's one I just don't get at all though: "I couldn't care less" became "I could care less". How does that not change the meaning to the opposite? If you could care less then you care more, no? :?

That has driven me fucking mental for years. Ridiculous alteration.

^ its called being sarcastic. Just like we say "I could give a fuck" when referring to something that we don't give a fuck about.

^ Aha! An official response from the US Embassy of Sarcasm arrives. Much like the British fondness for sarcasm, I can only assume it has similar difficulties gaining a foothold in the international market for sarcasm then. Doesn't strike me as being especially sarcastic though, I must admit. Surely feigning enthusiasm and interest would be more sarcastastic than just dropping a syllable from a well-established phrase of contempt... but what do I know of US sarcasm? I could care less for it ;)

33hz: Thanks for reminding me of the existence of Psychoville. Never got around to watching that one despite being a massive fan of their other stuff. Purchasing as we speak :)

Of the comedy shows mentioned on this page, I suspect Dark Place would appeal to the US market. Particularly those US horrorfan folks. Even more particularly those US horrorfan folks who like Shaun Hutson and/or Guy N. Smith novels. Combospoofing such eminantly spoofable British purveyors of pompous 'n' puerile shlock-horror authors who try so hard to ape US horror writing within the realms of a spot-on pisstake of 70/80s low-budget British TV also aping its US equivalent is just made of pure uberwin on every level <3

The Mark Gatiss et al ouevre should definitely appeal to those US folks who appreciate the traditionally British surreal comedy stuff we're probably best known for overseas... aside from bloody Benny Hill repeats 8)

I've not read the last few pages of this thread, so this might have been covered, but I was under the impression from research a few years back that people from the UK are not eligible for the immigration lottery.

Well, that was news to me and you're right, but I don't think it's a permanent ban, it's decided as follows:

wiki said:
Ineligible countries

Those born in any territory that has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are not eligible to receive a diversity visa. For DV-2013, natives of the following nations were ineligible: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam.[3] The entry period to apply for the DV-2013 was from October 4, 2011 to November 5, 2011.

Nah dyslexia would just be universal. Have you ever tried to read an old English source? It's a fucking nightmare! Interestingly, my friend who studied history at Cambridge got taken to a book written by a priest written if I remember correctly in the 1400s, and on the side they'd written 'fuck the priest of xyz', and that is apparently the first record of someone using fuck in writing we have :D

Fuck try the Canterbury Tales written in the 1300s, madness to try and decipher for someone like me who is terrible at things like that. Only read the Pardoner's Tale in it but it had some interesting thing too, the things that make it from that long ago always have wee interesting things in them. Bit (completely) off topic but it just came to mind.

I used to have a greencard that I got because my granddad is a US citizen and my mum emmigrated, stupidly lost it on a bus though and I can only replace it if I was living over there, is stupid that I can't replace it from the UK. It's gone now though and I'd have to start the application process again if I wanted another, the wait last time after we applied was about 5 years, although apparently it would be shorter for me if I wanted to apply again.

That's a bit harsh mugz! Fucking bureaucratic goons.
