US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

Why wouldn't they just pocket the money from the taxes and keep sending jobs overseas

You think they wouldn't just take the money and keep it? Have you heard of stock buybacks? They want all the money they can get, cut the taxes and they say thanks and give the US the finger and keep sending jobs overseas

It's been happening for decades

in today's news from the dumpster fire:

Trump tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China begin Saturday, White House says

tariffs are obviously great for u.s. consumers and the u.s. market responded by jumping dropping 337 points. er, never mind.

well, at least most economists agree tariffs are a good thing right? let's check in with them:

Economists Agree: Trump Is Wrong on Tariffs

"As President Trump threatens to slap steep tariffs on many countries, he is boasting that his taxes on imports will be a boon to the U.S. economy, but most economists strongly disagree—many say Trump’s tariffs will increase inflation, slow economic growth, hurt U.S. workers and result in American consumers footing the bill for his tariffs.

Virtually all economists think that the impact of the tariffs will be very bad for America and for the world,” said Joseph Stiglitz, an economics professor at Columbia University and a winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. “They will almost surely be inflationary.”
" (my emphasis)

never mind :(

is there anybody here who can make the case that these tariffs are actually a good thing for the u.s. consumer, that canada, mexico and china pay for them and that trump's not a fucking idiot who doesn't understand them? anybody?

Hey, we're just lucky to have a job, right? We're lucky our betters just don't take their balls and leave.
Wait! They have been doing it all through tax cuts for them under every Republican President since Nixon.
That rising tide doesn't seem to have floated everybody's boat.
What did Einstein supposedly (Rita Mae Brown) say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

"The systems include a vast database called Enterprise Human Resources Integration, which contains dates of birth, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, pay grades and length of service of government workers, the officials said."

So the Nazi has the personal data of all federal employees now? That's cool I guess

oh, that was a brain fart on my part. i just didn't recognize that c_k meant tds in that context.

tds is a bunch of bullshit. it's like "fake news" - it's a thing trumpers throw out when they don't like being challenged on the facts and merits of an argument.

Of course TDS is not an actual syndrome. It’s just the gut dislike for the man because of the conditioning that has been done on the Left. Give the man his Cabinet and let Trump do what he was elected to do. He had as big of a mandate as you get in this world today.

"Who needs checks and balances? I would rather have an authoritarian dictator"

this is just bullshit. but i'll give you a chance to prove me wrong.

so i have a gut dislike of trump only because i am conditioned?

who has conditioned me? and how? tell me. which sources do i use and how exactly are they conditioning me? show your work please. and thank you.

i enumerated some of the reasons i have problems with trump back in 2021. i could add hundreds of things to that list today, not least the procession of woefully unqualified, underqualified and, in some cases simply corrupt, people he's nominated for important positions.

Give the man his Cabinet and let Trump do what he was elected to do.

i'm not in the senate so i have no control over his cabinet picks. it's also not possible for me to let or not let trump do what he was elected to do. i already did my part. i did not vote for him.

as a u.s. citizen and it's not only my right, it's my responsibility, to question the president. when i became a u.s. citizen, i swore to support and defend the u.s. constitution. there was nothing in the oath about supporting the president.

He had as big of a mandate as you get in this world today.

this is laughable nonsense.

trump's 2024 margin of victory was the 4th smallest since 1960. he had no more a mandate that biden had.

trump's lost the wsj: The Dumbest Trade War in History

"Trump will impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for no good reason.

President Trump will fire his first tariff salvo on Saturday against those notorious American adversaries . . . Mexico and Canada. They’ll get hit with a 25% border tax, while China, a real adversary, will endure 10%. This reminds us of the old Bernard Lewis joke that it’s risky to be America’s enemy but it can be fatal to be its friend.
