Watching Beto now. He's a dynamo! Trump must not watch video footage of himself after that "He [Beto] sure uses his hands a lot" quip. I agree he's got a good shot at the nomination. He's not an octogenarian, and he's got the same kind of mojo Obama has. I loved what he had to say about the primary provider of mental health treatment is jails.

2020 presidential election: Pete Buttigieg has raised $7 million

Pete Buttigieg has raised more than $7 million since launching a presidential exploratory committee in January, the potential candidate announced Monday morning.

Why it matters: Buttigieg started with low name recognition and earned more organic search interest than initial media visibility, but reached as high as 4th in a recent nationwide poll.

"This is just a preliminary analysis, but our team?s initial report shows we raised over $7 million dollars in Q1 of this year. We (you) are out-performing expectations at every turn. I'll have a more complete analysis later, but until then: a big thank you to all our supporters."
? Mayor Pete, in a tweet

Over the past week:

  • Buttigieg criticized President Trump's "MAGA" slogan: There is a "false promise being peddled by this White House that the solution is just to turn back the clock ?'We?re gonna make America Great again?' You know, what does that mean? It means 'we're going to stop the changes so you don't have to change anything,' and it's not honest. You can't have honest politics that revolves around the word 'again.'"
  • He also claimed "enormous respect" for Hillary Clinton, who he criticized in January for her claiming that America is "already great": "Just to make this clear, I think America would be a much better place if she were president ... That's why I voted for her and that's why I campaigned for her."

What's next: Expect more campaigns to announce their fundraising tallies today, since 2019's first quarter of fundraising ended yesterday.

Go deeper:

I'm impressed by his numbers considering the name recognition issue.

slight drift but the money involved is also somewhat depressing. the web site opensecrets.org estimated the total cost of the presidential and house races in the 2016 election. their estimate was $6.5 billion...

to put that in perspective it's about 10% of the total budget for the u.s. department of education and about 125% of the budget for the u.s. food and drug administration.

:\

Jesus Christ... want to make America great again? Limit the total expenditures for presidential and congress races severely and spend it on education instead. As a bonus, maybe people would even be forced to think more about the actual qualifications of candidates rather than voting for the one that got pushed the hardest on them.

This shit with Biden is pissing me off. It's another example of Democrats beating themselves. They should be focusing on Beating Trump all day every day, instead they're having a conversation about personal space. If you are going to accuse someone of sexual misconduct, do so. If somebody hugged you or touched you on your shoulder and you don't like it, tell them to their face or simply shut the fuck up.

Dems seem to be politically suicidal. MSNBC is torching Bernie every day. They're still pissed because Hillary lost, and they know Bernie would've won. Bernie would win in 2020 as well, I'm almost certain of it.

He would get all the votes the Democrat got in 2016. All he's gotta do is flip a couple of blue collar Midwest states that Hillary foolishly neglected (thanks for that). His strong stances on trade and unions would be enough to do that.

A Sanders/Beto ticket would be unbelievably great

What? Nah that would be awful. Beto can disguise himself as a centrist with the Robin Hood-style liberal politics he's pushing with that bullshit Medicare for all (NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN). Bernie's never getting elected. The left is so fucked they wanted Biden.

If they couldn't get behind Hillary, the left is going to do what the right did in 2016 where the slug doesn't hit the target at all and one candidate buys up or drums up support beyond belief of people who sit inside and outside the left arena with intelligent minds (I tend to consider myself someone who sits outside of the arena but sympathizes heavier with the left than the right...) and expect someone like Warren or worse to get in for their bending-over to Donald.

American Politics are just as much of a performance art and a sport just like the NFL is.

Dems seem to be politically suicidal.
THIS is why I love you, mal. You get it. YES THEY ARE, that is probably the best way to put it in the fewest words possible.

People love Bernie, man. His main obstacle has always been and will continue to be the DNC. They rigged the primary against him last time. They knew people didn't like Hillary, but they figured she'd coast into the presidency anyway with an opponent like Trump.

We can examine the reasons behind the hate for Hillary, how much of it is sexism, how much is her policies, etc. But there's no denying the hate exists. And they stacked the deck for her anyway. Figured that'd be their chance.

Now instead of fighting back against attacks on their candidates, and not giving up any ground...Dems are adding to their own problems. Whether it's Bernie, Beto, Warren, Biden...whoever...they're doing the a Republicans work for them. Even entertaining this idea that Biden is some kind of creep is ludicrous. Republicans stood by fuckin ROY MOORE and Bret Kavanaugh. Dems just fold automatically every time. Republicans laugh. Fuckin weak as shit.

Bernie was on fire at the National Action Network conference today. Elizabeth Warren seemed completely without charisma in comparison.

Biden still has his mojo - he spoke at the Electrical Workers Union in DC.

But right now my ticket of choice would be Beto/Mayor Pete.

Honestly we really won't know who the real front runners are until after the first debate in June.

The results could be a surprise. Howard Dean was the presumptive Dem nominee in 2004 and he came in third in Iowa. Howard Schultz could end up being a spoiler in the general. Ali Velshi and Stephanie Ruhle just dismantled him. I hate to be a pessimist but I think Trump will eke out another electoral college victory while losing the popular vote again. When Rick Scott was elected governor of Florida in 2010, he seemed to be the poster child for electoral buyers remorse and he's now won three statewide elections.

bernie is the front runner, now that superdelegates aren't a thing, he'll smoke the primaries - he's one of the most recognizable names in politics, a huge grassroots movement supporting him, 30+ years of consistently working towards progressive goals, no legit scandals, and addresses stuff as best he can when shit does happen, and so on

every other candidate's own records and past actions have sealed their fates, plus at best their platforms are just cheap, watered down versions of bernie's (or obama in beto's case); why get a cheap knockoff when you can get the superior quality original instead?

the real question is who will be bernie's VP? personally im hoping for tulsi gabbard

Proposing an eleven scale figure for a new proposal is sealing the fate of his political future before he even got out of the gate.

I don't see Bernie picking Tulsi Gabbard.

As a presidential candidate, Biden is probably the most palatable choice for moderates and independents.

I'm waiting for more data.

Buttigieg came out of nowhere but I'm liking what I see so far.

Obamacare is the original actual start to getting MFA. Bernie wasn't the first to implement the plan. He is simply the first to say that we can get there faster than we might think. Change is slow. Give credit where credit is due.

Criticism of Biden is simply a sign of the times. I personally think he's not so bad but I can also see how he represents an old way of thinking. I'm glad the dems aren't scared to put him under scrutiny as it simply shows that they aren't a fake party like the republicans who will support someone no matter what they do.

Biden would be 78 on Inauguration Day, which. would make him BY FAR the oldest President. Age was a major issue with the McCain campaign and he was around 70 when he ran for President because if he had kicked off, Sarah Palin would have been President. Bernie is a year older than Biden. But I do think that Biden was subjected to a political hit job.

Andrew Yang got a big boost after appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast but his agenda would never get through Congress IMO. Also Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) kicked off his campaign. He's got an interesting story - he was a staffer for Congressman Jim Traficant when Traficant was expelled from Congress after his felony convictions and Traficant ran against him from prison.

Pres. Obama cautions against "a circular firing squad"

While speaking at a town hall in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday, former President Barack Obama addressed divisions within the Democratic party and outlined his concerns about the fiercely partisan political climate.
“One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States—maybe it’s true here as well—is a certain kind of rigidity where we say, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, this is how it’s going to be,” Obama said at the town hall, organized by The Obama Foundation. “And then we start sometimes creating what’s called a 'circular firing squad' where you start shooting at your allies because one of them is straying from purity on the issues.
He continued: "When that happens, typically the overall effort and movement weakens, so I think...you have to recognize that the way we’ve structured democracy requires you to take into account people who don’t agree with you.”
Navigating compromise, he said, was “necessary for everyone.” He cited as evidence his efforts to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement and push through the Affordable Care Act.

Organized by The Obama Foundation, the town hall brought together more than 300 young leaders from private, public and nonprofit institutions and organizations, according to a statement. The speech, designed to foster civic engagement, was following by a question-and-answer segment during which the former president touched on a range of topics, from inequality to climate change.

At one point, he warned against rising nationalism and the “bloodshed” that follows such positions.
“Nationalism, particularly from the far-right, has re-emerged,” he said. “A politics that divides us into us and them,” he said. “And we know where that leads. Europe knows better than anyone where that leads.”
He also praised Europe for its rising standard of living, calling it the “pinnacle of human well being” and credited the spike in education rates and economic wealth to Democratic policies.
“We have to recognize that this moment is full of contradictions,” he said. “Europe in 2019, in some ways, has achieved the pinnacle of human well being. Collectively in Europe right now, on average, you probably see the highest standards of living of any group of people in the history of the planet.
But, he continued, “powerful forces are threatening to reverse many of these trends. The Democratic institutions that helped to bring these about, often times, have been taken for granted. The planet that we live on is in danger.”

Fostering civic engagement and working across political divisions is key to addressing those issues, he said.

I dont know how Obama is attempting to foster civic engagement while simultaneously having a pleasantly worded dig at alt right nationalistic violence fear spreading.

As pleasant as he is and charming, he glossed over the problems many countries have within the EU, why Britain is (sort of) leaving, the overall standard as an average mat be higher however that involves drastically lowering the standard of living for many countries.

The blase attitude towards standards of living DROPPING despite being wealthy and general unhappiness of peoples far worse off now despite working their arses off would result in nationalism.

Being worse off under any govt will result in people exercising their democratic right to have a govt that is aiming to have them economically better off. Climate agreements and environment are important however when people are losing jobs and placed in financial hardship , the 0 .00001% mercury emissions saved by closing down jobs and forclosing mortgages doesn't seem so wonderful.

Not American so not a subject that's affecting me however what he seems to lack is a basic understanding of economics.
