The Democratic Party wastes the votes of so many people every Super Tuesday. It needs to end now


Even though they're no longer running, billionaire Tom Steyer and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana Pete Buttigieg will receive many votes on Tuesday. That's because numerous states have already been voting for days or weeks. The combination of early voting and staggered primaries means that many people waste their votes. This effectively disenfranchises voters, and weakens the party's ability to choose the strongest nominee. Voters will be left throwing their votes away on candidates who aren't even competing.

Early voting is becoming increasingly popular, too. Between 2000 and 2014, early ballots jumped from comprising 14 to 31 per cent of all ballots cast in national elections. Some officials have argued that early voting increases turnout, though there's little evidence for that. Research suggests that early voting just makes voting easier and faster for people who would otherwise vote on election day anyway.

This is a somewhat disingenuous and selective comparison WaPo's making. For example, the reason many of the Scandi countries don't have minimum wages is because their unions are substantially more powerful. They negotiate between employees and management for much more generous minimum wages, worker benefits, maternity leave, paid holidays, shorter working hours etc than those mandated by most governments.
 
I got that link from some conservative friends, and it's had me searching for the past few hours for more info. I found exactly what you said. I also was looking for what % of a population is on welfare per country, as it was argued the Scandanavians by nature do not seek welfare but instead are more self reliant as opposed to (listen for the conservative voice) America where we have too many fat and lazy eager to sit home and be taken care of. The fear being Americans have too much liability in their population to offer such things, with the workers being disincetivized to support the. Perhaps, but it reeks of blind fear to a large degree.

I still can't find what % of any country's population is on welfare, to have a second stick for comparison with countries that are more socialist vs capitalist. You can find a bajillion stats on % of GDP, and there are paragraphs outlining the difference in the strength of the social net, but nowhere can I find numbers on people who are fat and lazy anywhere (the expectation being % of unable-to-work ought to be fairly common, I suppose).

Nothing happened last time when it was so blatant so nothing will happen this time. They just allowed the statute of limitations to run out on Clinton's server crimes, nobody is seriously investigating Epstein's death, so I think they'll be just fine to steal a nomination from Bernie (again).

2016 is when Dems had the chance to stand up against the broken system and demand it be repaired. But the DNC argued that they can do this legally and that didn't even make the news:

Just wanted to say, I did my part, voted for feelin' the Bern early so I wouldn't have to go today. I swear to God if Biden and the Dems cheat him out of his bid this time I'm gonna vote for the Divider-in-Chief. Or abstain. I will not vote for that cuck Biden. Dear God, did I just call someone a cuckold? Something is getting to me... maybe it's my fear of a man who wants to get rid of weed and firearms and has a history of enacting policies to enforce such totalitarian laws.

I would rather the D-party fall apart at the seams and start afresh in four more years, rather than have a Biden administration.
 
@CFC yeah, when I early voted, Pete and the gang were all available choices lol. Glad I picked Bernie, the only candidate I was ever willing to stand behind anyhow.

I understand your perspective, but the deciding factor for me is the Supreme Court. No way do I want another conservative judge with a lifetime appointment. So I’ll hold my nose and vote for the Dem candidate 😕.

I can understand this sentiment as well. I think the main issue at concern is the courts take on Roe v Wade and its take on other civil liberties type cases. It does worry me, there's already only one Planned Parenthood in my state, but... fuck man, I'll drive my wife a few states over to prevent an unwanted pregnancy if necessary. I realize the idea behind PP is to help those who cannot afford to drive to a liberal state to have reproductive health addressed. I'm a huge proponent of population control so I do worry greatly about access to abortion and contraceptives.

I'm so damn middle of the road. I want to stock up on firearms in the event a dem win pushes forward draconian gun restrictions. But I also want universal healthcare. But I'm also annoyed by Trump and his judiciary picks (Brett, not Gorsuch to be frank) and the way he metaphorically sucks dictator's dicks. Everyone goes through an authoritarianism phase man but you're supposed to get over it by the time you reach adulthood. I wana visit Mao's body, both the passed Kims, Lenin... doesn't mean I think they were good people though. Just a fascination with preserving revered folk heroes like that.

There's definitely a socio-cultural perspective and argument to consider. Things that work well in one society might not work so well in one with a totally different culture.

Scandi countries are (or at least were until pretty recently) very culturally and socially (and ethnically) homogenous, like Japan. Socialist-type programs have seemingly tended to work best in such countries. Probably because there's a uniform social pressure for citizens to live up to certain standards of behaviour and expectations (ie: to not cheat or game the system, even though they could in theory).

But in a place where people know nobody and have no particular affection for or affiliation with the local culture and community, are they going to play in good faith by the rules, or are they going to bend and twist things for their own maximal personal gain at the expense of the rest of that community?

Lots of people doing the latter causes people to lose faith in the system and pull up the drawbridge against outsiders and perceived cheaters. Which (I would argue) is probably the genesis of much of the xenophobia we're seeing in wealthy Western countries of late, who feel (rightly or wrongly) their societies are atomising under the weight of foreigners with different cultures who have little affection for their new homeland.
 
Giving welfare to immigrants is recipe for a disaster.

So, even if Biden legit can pull ahead for the nomination, is anyone going to believe it or accept it? I don't think he can without shenanigans, which I think is the general belief (he's gonna get screwed). But is it even possible for him to get bumped and NOT create an outcry?

It would be as legitimate as Trump winning the election (in 2016) and Junior winning the election (in 2000)... so yes, people would accept it. I wouldn't though. Pretty sure our elections have been rigged since at least the Clinton years.

I'm torn. Like cdugs said, the supreme court nominations of the future worry me. Besides that, Trump's foreign policy deeply troubles me. I don't think I could bring myself to vote for him. Not sure if Biden would be much better, but at least he'd (probably) not be as impulsive and damaging to our foreign relationships. I don't know what I'd do if Biden was the nominee.

Despite what Grimez said, I think the outcry will be much louder this time if Biden steals the nomination from Bernie. Whether that will result in anything changing, I have no idea but fear it probably wouldn't.
 
What the hell is warrens play here? She can’t win. But if she gets on the ticket as bernies VP, it puts him well in command of the nomination. I don’t know if Bernie fans would want her, though.

I can’t see her falling in with Biden like the others. Does she just flail about until the end and cause disruption? Or work out a deal with someone?



*thats what everyone said of Biden before South Carolina, so who knows?
