The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

Whenever I eat hamberders, I simply must have a fresh mug of cofveve to go with it.

I only drink methadone with my hamberders. Trump drinks Putin's "cream" cofveve with his berders. Trump is a traitor to America and the worst fake president ever. It's very hard for me to put the word president and the name Trump next to each other. Those two words should not even be in the same dictionary together.

I know.. President Trump is supposed to be a punchline to a joke on the Simpsons. Not an actual person.

I do call him president trump cause I just find it kinda petty not too, but I share your sentiments. It's a joke. Literally.

If it were anybody else I would call them president but I seriously don't call him president. To me he's just that racist narcissistic asshole from the 80s and 90s.

Trump floats ending shutdown with a 'down payment' on wall, but Pelosi doesn't blink

David KnowlesEditor Yahoo News?January 24, 2019

After the Senate failed Thursday to pass either of two bills that would have reopened the federal government, President Trump floated a compromise of sorts on his demand for $5.7 billion to build a barrier on the border with Mexico.

It didn?t win over the person it was intended to appeal to, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

?One of the ideas suggested is they open it, they pay a sort of prorated down payment for the wall which, I think, people agree that you need. You need the wall. In fact, I see a lot of the Democrats, almost all of them are breaking, saying, ?Look, walls are good. Walls are good.'?

Trump?s remarks came as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., huddled on Capitol Hill seeking a deal to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Neither a Republican bill containing money for a wall nor a Democratic one that did not received the 60 votes needed for passage, although the Democratic bill, which attracted support from a handful of Republicans, came closer.

Hours earlier, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said that a short-term spending bill to reopen government ?would only work if there is a large down payment on the wall.?

Neither Sanders nor the president offered any details about how much money constituted a ?large down payment.? In December, Trump scuttled a continuing resolution to fund the federal government through February because it didn?t have an appropriation for the wall.

When asked by reporters about Trump?s proposal for a large ?prorated down payment,? Pelosi responded, ?That is not a reasonable agreement.?

Trump also told White House reporters he would support a ?reasonable agreement? between McConnell and Schumer, but was mum on specifics.

?If they come to a reasonable agreement, I would support it, yes,? Trump said.

Pelosi, however, made clear that she wasn?t interested in giving the president more money for a wall.

?The president just said that if they come to a reasonable agreement he would support it. I hope that that doesn?t mean some big down payment for the wall,? Pelosi said. Asked by reporters if she knew what Trump meant by a ?large prorated down payment,? she said she didn?t. ?I don?t know if he knows what he?s talking about,? she said. ?Do you??

The president has often referred to congressional funding for border security as a ?down payment? for a border wall, his signature campaign promise. The $5.7 billion he is seeking now would pay for a wall extending only a fraction of the entire 2,000-mile border, or even the 1,000 miles he has said in the past would suffice.

Trump has also gone back and forth on the construction of the wall, variously steel slats or concrete, and how he would fulfill his campaign promise that Mexico would pay for it. The Mexican government has refused even to discuss the idea, and most recently Trump has said the funds would come indirectly from Mexico as a side effect of the new trade agreement he has negotiated to replace NAFTA. He has also claimed the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill he signed on March 23 included ?an initial downpayment? for his wall, but Pelosi had a different take.

?Democrats won explicit language restricting border construction to the same see-through fencing that was already authorized under current law,? Pelosi said.

The situation is strange now because the amount this shutdown has cost so far has dwarfed the $5.7B being requested. I almost feel like the dems should just give him a lesser amount he's asking for just to stop the bleeding and help the federal employees out. But on the other hand if you give the guy an inch, is he going to think he can use this tactic again to get the next thing he wants?

If the Democrats learned ANYTHING from 9/11, you can't negotiate with a terrorist. Whether they're wearing a turban or an orange wig, it just cannot be done.

Trump said he would be proud to shut down the gov't, and he would take it on his mantle. Let this be his grand fuck up and his only legacy after he's out of office.

Thing is he's unlikely to accept a lesser amount of money. Honestly, 5 billion already IS the lesser amount. It's not nearly enough to actually build the kind of wall he's promised. It's short of even his own absurdly underestimated evaluation.

Man I'm trying to finalize my taxes with TurboTax. Nothing changed really this year, in fact I donated stuff to Goodwill when cleaning out my house that is worth almost $1500 in write-offs which means I have more write-offs than last year. But my refund is only about $350, versus every other year since I bought my house where it was more like around $2000 (this was with married filing separately which is the same as single which I filed as this year). To those supporting Trump because they were getting a little bit more back on every paycheck... I wonder what your income tax returns look like? Mine is WAY fucking down. :X I was gonna pay off the rest of my lawyer debt with my tax return, but GUESS NOT. Yeah I got like $50 more per paycheck but that adds up to about $600 which means I still kept less of my money this year.

Looks like Trump is caving on the shutdown for a few weeks of funding.

The tone deaf statements like Trump telling federal workers to just tell the grocery store that they'll pay later, or Wilbur Ross stating they should just get a loan (as if all lending institutions just opened their hearts), will hopefully follow them around.

How do people believe Trump cares about the working class?

I saw an article about Wilbur Ross basically saying "there's no excuse for you to not have money - just take out a loan". Says the billionaire.

Trump signs bill to reopen government for 3 weeks

ABC News January 25, 2019

Late Friday night, President Donald Trump signed a bill passed by Congress that officially reopens the federal government for three weeks while lawmakers negotiate border security funding with the president -- ending the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

"I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government," Trump said earlier on Friday, in a surprise development that thrilled hundreds of thousands of federal workers that have been toiling without pay for more than a month.

The bill passed by Congress, sources told ABC News, includes no funding for the president’s long-sought border wall.

The president said earlier on Friday that while has decided not to declare a national emergency at this time, he has the ability to do so if members of Congress do not work on a deal for border security.

"If we don't get a fair deal from Congress, the government either shut down on February 15th again or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the constitution of the United States to address this emergency," Trump said.

Later on Friday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted that the administration would move forward in three weeks with building a wall.

While the president has been slim on the details of the agreement, he did reference a conference committee of House and Senate leaders will act in “good faith” to reach an agreement on border security.

“Over the next 21 days, I expect both Democrats and Republicans will operate in good faith. This is an opportunity for all parties to work together for the benefit of our whole, beautiful and wonderful nation,” Trump said.

The president and members of his administration have been criticized for their responses to the financial hardships faced by many federal workers missing pay. But on Friday the president specifically thanked federal workers who have endured the shutdown and said he will see to it that they receive back-pay "very quickly or as soon as possible."

"I want to thank all of the incredible federal workers and their amazing families who have shown such extraordinary devotion in the face of this recent hardship," Trump said.

It's unclear exactly when federal workers could begin to see their back pay, but the White House said workers should expected to be paid in the "coming days." Over 800,000 federal workers were furloughed or worked with pay during the shutdown, forcing some to turn to food banks, charities and even put on fundraisers to make ends meet.

"Recognizing the urgency of getting Federal employees paid quickly, the administration is taking steps to ensure that they receive pay as soon as possible. Since specific payroll issues vary by agency, employees can find more information about paycheck details by reaching out to their agency," a senior administration official told ABC News. The president of the National Treasury Employees Union Tony Reardon said checks should go out as soon as possible. “Get the checks out now. Federal employees haven’t been paid in more than a month and mortgage and rent are due next week. They shouldn’t have to wait a minute longer,” he said.

Congress has been trying to come to a deal to reopen the government, ending the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

After Democrats rejected a proposal to temporarily reopen government with a pro-rated amount of border wall funding Thursday evening, Sen. Lindsey Graham told reporters Friday morning that Republican senators were looking to the White House to decide the next move.

We will see if we're not just back in the same place in a month from now.

Not surprising though, I expected trump would likely capitulate. Which is why I keep saying the democrats would be mad to give him anything more than a token amount of money. They have the winning hand. And trump is weak. He's all talk, soon as the pressures on from the side that strokes his ego, he caves.

He could be doing it to make it seem like he's compromised, and has saved the federal workers who are working for no pay, and then he'll shut it down again over the same thing but try to give himself more credibility since "he already compromised".

Unfortunately I'm betting that that's what will happen. Not sure why the democrats are celebrating. Only positive thing I see is that he's shot himself in the foot regarding government workers with the shutdown. I think if he does it again there'll be some consequences that he won't like, at least I hope. People don't really like being held hostage over a stupid wall which is essentially what happened. He's on a sinking ship that's about due to go under at this point.

Is that not reason for democrats to celebrate? :)
