The 2018 Trump Presidency thread

how would you characterize his ability to handle criticism?

I've never seen anyone criticised more harshly than Donald Trump, during my lifetime. Sometimes it obviously gets to him. But, generally, I think he has giant iron balls. Also, he seems utterly impervious to criticism in the sense that he does whatever the hell he wants and when people criticise him, he just tells them to get fucked. I've never seen anyone do that before, in US politics. Most politicians (and celebrities) play ball even if it's obviously disingenuous. Like Johnny Depp apologising to Australia. I like how Trump reacts to criticisms. He doesn't play that silly game. He just says fuck off. He's a bit of a pimp.

that made me smile

I'm a little ray of sunshine. ;)

So you want an authority figure who does whatever he wants and ignores what people want? I can't understand this willingness to get screwed and exploited.
Not being able to take criticism constructively should be disqualifying for anybody. Seriously, people criticized Obama for things that weren't even real and he was able to listen and respond to them in a civil and intellectual manner. Why don't you want that?

Authoritarianism refers to the advocacy or enforcement of strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom, and is commonly associated with a lack of concern for the opinions or needs of others. Authoritarian personality syndrome—a well-studied and globally-prevalent condition—is a state of mind that is characterized by belief in total and complete obedience to one’s authority. Those with the syndrome often display aggression toward outgroup members, submissiveness to authority, resistance to new experiences, and a rigid hierarchical view of society. The syndrome is often triggered by fear, making it easy for leaders who exaggerate threat or fear monger to gain their allegiance.

These criticisms take up too much of politician's time. Obama shouldn't have to deal with people criticising him for things that he didn't even do and neither should Trump... I'm not being screwed or exploited. I'm Australian. But, even if I was living in the US, I don't see how Trump would cause me any problems (other than social suicide).

I'm just trying to figure out what you find appealing about a leader who ignores his people, attacks private citizens, and in your words doesn't give a fuck.
Like the more I meet people who get this hard on for authority figures, the more I want to just say fuck it and run for office in the GOP. I don't have to write scripts, I don't have to talk about real issues, I can just make them up and most importantly reassure ignorant people that their problems are real and simple.

I don't know what people find so appealing about game show host pollies. :\ I hate political correctness with a passion and I hate politics. So do most people. The current social climate is toxic. Politicians lie through fake smiles. (Just look at Hillary.) I see Trump as a symbol for change. He makes me feel more positive about the world, because he's fighting back against the bullshit. Sure, he's a bit of an insecure man-child and sure he's a bright orange asshole with a comb-over... but at least the system - that I hate - is starting to crumble.

What does politics mean to you? What do you not like about the "system"? Do you not feel capable of making a change within that system?

I'll answer these questions or any you have too, but I want to hear your opinion first.

@SheWasLvL18

I like that we've changed tone. This is much better.

What does politics mean to you? What do you not like about the "system"?

Everything is fake. The news is fake. Politicians are fake. Most information is wrong. Everybody is lying all the time. Even if Trump is a liar, at least he's pointing out that everybody is lying and the whole fucking system is corrupt. The hypocrisy of Trump being part of that broken system is less significant, to me, than exposing it. You can't fix something until you admit that it's broken. A lot of people think the United States is broken. A lot of people are disillusioned with the social climate.

Like I said, I don't like political correctness. I believe in fundamental free speech and the left is a threat to that fundamental right. There is no free speech in Australia. It's not in our constitution. It is important to maintain this fundamental right not just for the US but for the world at large... There's a lot of people on here that are so politically divided they - as a default setting - detest anyone who supports the Trump administration. I find this more alarming and dictatorial than anything that Trump has done or said.

Up to the 1950's, the western world was pretty conservative. Then there was a shift towards left wing (social) values. I believe it is now starting to trend in the other direction. We've been travelling down the left path too long now. We need to go right for a while or we'll eventually get lost.

I said in another thread, if you built a super computer - much smarter than any human and capable of independent thought - it would be a republican. The right is the brain and the left is the heart, which is not to say that people on the left are any less intelligent than those on the right. They aren't. Similarly, those on the right don't have less capacity for empathy. It's just an analogy... I think we need both the left and the right and I believe political correctness is an aftermath of the 1960s. Society naturally oscillates back and forth. This is why we have a bipolar governmental system.

I have faith in the world, I just think we need change. The republican party needs to re-invent itself. Although I'm not a huge fan of abortion in certain contexts, we'd be better off not including that in the decision making process for government. The same applies to marijuana legislation. We need the right, right now. Cutting off one of our wings isn't going to help us fly. This is why it frustrates me - and others - when people treat right wingers like shit. It's not just Trump. It happened with Bush.

It's not good for anyone. If Trump is an asshole, why use that as an excuse to act like an asshole to people who aren't Trump? I'm not saying this to you, I'm just trying to explain my position because people appear to be confused as to how it's possible that I like Trump without being a piece of shit.

Do you not feel capable of making a change within that system?

I'm sure I have influenced some people in a positive way, but I have a family and a job and I'm trying to build towards a self-sustaining eco-friendly lifestyle. So, I don't have much time for other people. It's not my position to make significant changes within the system and I don't expect Trump to. He is a ripple. Significant change is coming. It may happen during his presidency and it may not. I doubt it will be that soon, but I can wait...

I wasn't convinced he was going to lose the election, but - if I had to bet - I probably would have bet against him winning. I thought he had a way better chance than anybody else I know. A lot of people (particularly males) don't hate Trump as much as the average CEP contributor. If you talk to them alone and say you like Trump and explain why, people aren't socially pressured to say one thing or another. I get all sorts of shit out of people. I can be charming and I know how to dig. So, I wasn't hugely surprised when he won.

It didn't matter to me if he won as long as he didn't lose by a large margin. That's all I needed to convince me that the dam was breaking. Before he was elected, I wasn't sure which was better: losing slightly or winning. Because I didn't know what the fuck he was going to do once he was in office. In retrospect, I'm glad he won. It would have been better if he won by a large margin.

I saw him, in a video the other day, saying to a reporter, "Don't be a baby." I don't know why the fuck the president has to do so many god damned press interviews and put up with annoying angry little reporters yelling manipulative shit at him about topics that are so menial and irrelevant to the real problems of the world. Why does everybody have to play this stupid game? The answer is: they don't. Trump is not playing it and there are no consequences. We can all breathe easy and get real, for once. Let's skip all the fancy speeches and all the fake news. It's all utter crap.

I'm concerned that the US is getting weak. It's too soft. The western world is full of a bunch of snowflakes... We need to toughen up, or this empire will fall like all the other great empires in history.
:\

Pimp??? Lol that dude is a narcissistic pathological liar bitch. You would be cool with having a liar as a prez... Ant????

There are seven question marks in your post and four full-stops. Toss in a couple of commas and you've got a decent salad. :) Every president ever is a liar. I'd take Trump any day of the week over the mess that calls it'self Australian politics.

Question marks lol???????????? Are we English teachers on Bluelight now?

President Obama was not a liar... Especially not on purpose. And definitely not like Trump... that's a fact. Trump lies about fucking everything. Every fucking thing.

Why do you even care, you're from Australia wtf? I couldn't even name one politician from there. And neither could 95% of the people I know. I guess we do rule the world... imagine that?... What up Nas?

Holy shit.

In 2015, Obama was asked by CBS' Bill Plante when he learned Mrs. Clinton had used an unsecured email server.

Barry the Liar said:
The same time everybody else learned it, through news reports.

But Obama did not learn about Clinton's home-brew server like "everybody else."
According to the inspector general's report, Obama was in fact one of 13 top government officials communicating with Clinton on her private email server, even as Clinton's server was targeted by foreign intelligence services.

And definitely not like Trump... that's a fact. Trump lies about fucking everything. Every fucking thing.
Obama lied to the American public regarding an investigation into the mishandling of classified information. An incredibly serious crime. Feel free to show where Trump has lied about anything remotely serious. With the constant barrage that Trump gets for lying, it would be nice of the same people to admit that Obama's lies were objectively far more serious.

Why do you even care, you're from Australia wtf? I couldn't even name one politician from there. And neither could 95% of the people I know.
Yet you and your buddies feel confident discussing global politics. More power to you.

Wow, I'd hate to mod this place

Being crazy and rich isn't having iron balls, it's being crazy, 70 and rich

The Umbrella thing is kinda like "Oscarssowhite". Not gonna elaborate further right now and didn't mean to derail a thread
(wtf happened to Bernie Sanders?)

POTUS said:
There is great anger in our Country caused in part by inaccurate, and even fraudulent, reporting of the news. The Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the People, must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly. That will do much to put out the flame of Anger and Outrage and we will then be able to bring all sides together in Peace and Harmony. Fake News Must End!

Calling out propaganda and attempting to unite the country. Great leadership.
If the news actually reported the news then Trump would have far fewer haters.

I found lots of web pages some had 5 pages or more of trumps constant lying. But I'm not gonna waste my time or anybody else's by posting links or copying and pasting. Fuck that I have a life. Plus his lies are right there for you and everybody to Google... Like your going to anyway... Alternative facts... Facts don't matter anymore... Remember?

He calls everything he doesn't like or the truth about him... Fake news. Everything he calls fake news is the absolute truth. You really believe him or you know it's real news and just wont admit it.

Also, why does his lies have to be serious? Lies are lies. You are okay with someone who constantly lies... on PURPOSE? He thinks you're so stupid that you will believe his lies... and you do lol.

They voted to get rid of Obamacare over 70 times and now they are saying that's not true. They didn't do that...wtf

Clinton's email server? Trump ran on that during the campaign trail. Now he's using an unsecured iPhone after being told China and Russia are listening.

I remember when he said he would never golf he would be too busy being the president. He's out there golfing every week pretty much.

Unite the country? Really? This man is trying devide us. Trying to start a race war. Unfortunately it's working.

Just remember the good always outweighs the bad. Whatever he does in the dark will be brought to the light (Robert Mueller) I guess that's unfortunate for Trump.

i imagine hillary clinton and barack obama might disagree. ironies abound :)

...he seems utterly impervious to criticism...
oh that is funny. thank you.

Trump calls media the “true Enemy of the People” days after CNN was sent a bomb
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SEEKS TO LIMIT PROTESTS NEAR WHITE HOUSE AND ON NATIONAL MALL

yeah, he handles an opposing viewpoint real well :\

given the amount of kvetching here about biased moderation and censorship, you'll surely join me in decrying the administration's attempts, noted in that second link, to clamp down on u.s. citizen's expressing their opinion?

sincere enquiry, how would you feel if, in response to your criticism about how bluelight is run, the staff just told you to fuck off? you'd surely be ok with that?

alasdair

Dude, no one even watches the 'fake news' anymore anyhow. I don't even have free access television hooked up in my home, let alone cable. Most people I know don't watch the news, they get info from NPR on their commute (very good, un-fake source) or they seek it out on a deliberately fake news site like Breaitbart. Trump isn't exposing evil, he's crying about a dying medium that no one gives a fuck about anymore.

And Trump has never tried to unite the country. He intentionally picks controversial, alt-right court picks across the board. He refuses to talk to Democrats to find middle ground (though admittedly they're not trying very hard either). He intentionally gives favors to wealthy oligarchs and racists within his administration. You call that a 'call for unity?'
