The 2018 Trump Presidency thread

Hthe president effects the culture, but, well look at the racism spewed by supporters, but the Professor is probably right about the lack of correlation with unemployment. These things are a combo of factors. Not to bump into your forum abruptly, but does anyone take him seriously? Aside from his capacity to do damage? Worst Election - Ever

nope, i don't take him seriously except as a really dangerous force.

the guy is an absolute disgrace, and i think far too many people overlook how dangerous he is, because he panders to them by attacking things they are cynical about.
but yeah, he has nurtured some extremely dark shit - and the sort of thing that doesn't just fade away with the news cycle. people that are radicaised into far-right politics become a serious threat to social cohesion, and we will be dealing with the fallout for years to come.

Better take him seriously because there's presumably 6 more years (barring any assassinations)

To answer your question... yes Lorne, we do have a couple of people who take Trump quite seriously and will defend him to the death.

I like how you assume he'll be re-elected. I want so badly to believe he won't but it wouldn't surprise me, unfortunately.

I wouldn't bet on his re-election and I wouldn't bet against it... I wouldn't say I take Trump seriously. His opponents take him seriously (when he's clearly joking) in a desperate attempt to manipulate public opinion. As I've said, I think he's a clown. I think he's borderline socially retarded and I also think he's a pig. But, that doesn't make him a bad president. Neither does Bill Clinton fucking young female staff members in the face in the Oval Office. The effect of his presidency on the country makes him a good/bad president.

He didn't divide the country. It was already divided and his opponents continue to widen the gap by condemning anybody who doesn't disapprove of him as an idiot / racist / apologist. There is an imaginary dictatorship run by the left. They think they can tell people what to think. They largely fail to engage with reason. They just insist they are right and their opposition is stupid. This just makes the country more divided.

I don't know if you were talking about me, shadow, but I certainly wouldn't defend him to the death. I'm just sick of the bullying from the left. Doesn't have anything to do with Trump, really. The same thing happened with Bush. When he was the president, he was the devil. The left behaved like angry little children. The same thing is happening now. This is because of a deep rooted anti-Republican bias. Trump is just the latest excuse.

Heh. Money is on Trump, unless more people go and vote and also are not just wrapped up in entertainment.

he ran on uniting the country. in his response to the shooting he said, among other things "we must unite to conquer hate."

i totally agree with him.

do you think trump is a uniter? can you give me a couple of examples of things trump has done to unite the country?

thanks.

alasdair

I wouldn't defend him to the death either, his campaign was largely funded by Zionist Sheldon Adelson so there are massive question marks as to what their intentions are. But based on results and what we've seen, I'd currently give Trump a B+. And that's me being harsh due to the wheels of justice being slow.

If things continue largely as-is with no major wars, and especially if he's able to further de-escalate any other quagmires, then he should certainly win re-election. As of now who is the best candidate the Dems have? Please run Biden, please.

Reverend Al Sharpton said:
"Discussing Trump and how he used young blacks for another photo op at the White House today instead of discussing issues of importance, this time he called it a "young black leadership summit". Shameful."

Charlie Kirk said:
"How dare you? These 400+ beautiful young black leaders came from all across the country. Some have never been on a plane before. You should be applauding the fact young black leaders met the President. Oh, and the IRS called, you still owe your taxes you con artist."

Charles V Payne said:
Everytime President Trump meets with Black people it's "shameful".
If President Trump never met Black people it would be "shameful".
Black people that go to White House under Obama "cool, hip & concerned".
Black people that go to White House under Trump "dumb, mentally ill & played".

Name a president that ever ran on dividing the country and I will answer your question.
that's such an odd response. we're not talking about other presidents - we're talking about trump. the 'whataboutism' deflection gets a little tiresome.

my point is that trump explicitly ran on being a uniter. so what's he doing to unite the country?

i think leaders should start by being an example. his example of one of an uncouth bully, imo. and people follow that lead.

alasdair

He only bullies people that initially attack him and who are getting in the way of uniting the country.

I'm an odd person, but I don't think that comment is so odd... I'll explain.

Every president says they're going to unite the country. Nobody runs on a platform of division. Not sure what the word explicitly is supposed to mean. Anyway: what did Obama - or any other president - do to unite the country? I'm not deflecting, I'm establishing a relative context for your statement... If every president (Democrat or Republican) for the past five decades has failed to unite the country... what's your point about Trump failing to unite the country? It is an impossible task, especially for him.

he ran on uniting the country. in his response to the shooting he said, among other things "we must unite to conquer hate."

i totally agree with him.

I don't find your statements about Trump supporters offensive. You're not contributing to the division, while blaming it on Trump, but some people in this thread are.

MSNBC: "President Trump abandons his open umbrella at the door to Air Force One while departing for Indianapolis on Saturday".

"Oh the humanity, the horror of it all. The evil President Trump brutally abandons a poor innocent umbrella. #UmbrellaLivesMatter Hey MSNBC is this really news? You are pathetic."

He only bullies people that initially attack him and who are getting in the way of uniting the country.
that is such a b.s. cop out.

what did obama do to attack him that excused trump's birther attack. what did the manager of the l.a. dodgers do to prompt trump's lame, critical tweet on saturday night?

the problem, in large part, is that trump can't handle criticism. period.

trump could learn a thing or two from dave roberts. did you see his response? it was: "I’m happy he was tuning in and watching the game. I don’t know how many Dodger games he’s watched. I don’t think he is privy to the conversation. That’s one man’s opinion."

that is just class. plain and simple.

perhaps he should listen to this guy: "“We must speak our minds openly...”" (trump inaugural address).

yes we must. and trump could show some leadership by respecting that.

alasdair

Yeah I've got to agree with alasdairm on this one... Trump bullied all the other republicans competing for his presidency. He is, generally, a bully. But, personally, I think his shtick is hilarious. People need to stop over-reacting. Why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist about a grown man saying words to another grown man. It's all such a fucking joke. Like Geoffrey Rush being sued for touching a woman's back. The world needs to chill out a bit. The sky isn't falling.

the problem, in large part, is that trump can't handle criticism. period.

I don't know about that.
(had to disagree with you on something ;))

that made me smile :)

People need to stop over-reacting. Why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist about a grown man saying words to another grown man.
because one of the men is the president of the u.s. and i, and others, think he should act like it.

I don't know about that.
^ what don't know about it? how would you characterize his ability to handle criticism?

alasdair

All of us anti Trump people better take him seriously. He's evil. Vote his people out and vote him out...NOW... Vote... Give him less power. Get out and vote now. In the words of Obama... "Don't boo... Vote."
