The 10 latest scams to avoid

i love when cold callers call me up cuz i enjoy fucking with them making them think they got me and obviously i give them false information and sometimes talk in a dodgy accent and just say random shit to wind them up. a mate of mine had a letter in the post claiming a relative in america who he never heard of has died and left him loads of inheritance money and instructions on how to claim it.

Yes that was from me, can you tell him to hurry up and send me his bank details please.

I have not had the BT phone calls but plenty of emails, I got one saying I had not paid a bill and to contact them immediately just click on the link, obviously I did not. month later got one saying they thought my account has been used fraudulently and to get in touch this email had a phone number as well as a link to click on. I just sent them to BT to deal with.

The microsoft ones I tell them I dont own a computer and they hang up quickly. I have been getting more and more with banks I do not bank with telling me about suspicious activity on my account, I send them into my bank as I know they either pass them on or see what is possibly going round in their names.

As for the one where someone tells you to strip off they told me it was for a head to toe scabies check OMG I feel such a fool :( lol

Ive been getting lots of phishing emails about bitcoins recently, presumably linking me to what is almost certainly a fake site probably wanting to me to enter my bank details so that they 'can pay me all my outstanding bitcoins'. Yeah right, of course they are gonna do that and wouldnt be dreaming of plundering my bank account or asking me for fees so that they can release some bitcoins i havent even got. :\

I'm sure everyone here is too savvy to fall for such a thing, but it's another one to be aware of that is currently doing the rounds. A variation of the 'you've got loads of free money waiting for you, but you have to pay us some fees to get it, and if you do, you'll have to pay more and more fees for additional administration costs for money that you will never get'. Some people must still be falling for these things or the scammers wouldnt be bothering to try. :?

I always hang up on cold call sales and ask that they do not call again. If they do call again I usually get a bit rude about it.

As far as investments, if it sounds to good to be true, it is.

I stick with mutual funds, cd's, and stock in well known companies when investing money and well that has not let me down yet. I also have an IRA and the money has doubled already in ten years since I started puttin money in it. I started my IRA at 16 and well I have not checked it in almost 5 years but I read that it is up more. Seeing how the IRA is a long term investment and linked to social security I really don't mess with it.

I would only drain my IRA if I was really hard up for cash. I know its a bit off subject but I am thinking of draining my IRA to help fund a business I am starting as if the business is succesful I really won't need the money and I can always put more money in there. Maybe I can take a loan out against it or something. It is best to just leave your money in an IRA if you can afford it.

Even if you are young and still in high school its a good idea to put some money in an IRA, which is what I did since I was 14.

Avoid getting scammed by off-licenses, always count your change. And if you get more change back than expected say "thank you" and walk out. Most of those guys can't count. ;)

That depends. I grew up in a village; and although I'm living a stone's throw from the centre of the city now, my home has a very definite "village-y" feel to it.

I'm always nice to the staff in my local outdoor, and always hand back any excess change in the rare event of an error. Because, lest we forget, it's going to come out of their wages. Last time, the shopkeeper was so grateful, she gave me a free packet of crisps. Not quite worth as much as the overpayment, but it's nice to know I'm in her good books.

seems like even top vendors on that darknet site selectively scam people now. Looked at a few feedback pages for top vendors, most of them have a fair few 1 out of 5's, with people claiming the package never arrived. Probably happened because they got rid of escrow.

I've given up on it now for a bit I think. Can get good RC's from legitimate vendors far easier/ cheaper without the possibility that I might get scammed. And most illegal stuff that I enjoy I have a dealer for who always generally gets pretty top stuff.

^ anybody who answers the phone and blindly follows a stranger's directions to do anything to their own computer deserves whatever happens to them...

alasdair

I disagree completely. What about people with aspergers who take things literally, which is a symptom of their disability. And other vulnerable adults. No one deserves to be scammed apart from the mean people who inflict that treatment onto others.

Abso-fucking-lutely. It's not just Aspergers, other similar traits in people may lead them to being scammed. I am very close to a vulnerable adult who got taken in by the "we're from Microsoft here to fix your computer" brigade.

I find what Alasdair said both ignorant and offensive.

^ lol. no surprise there :) when all you have is a hammer...

i've found a number of things you've said recently ignorant and offensive so a couple more from me and we'll be even. deal? :)

eveleivibe, i live in the refusal-to-take-personal-responsibility capital of the world where it's always somebody else's fault. obviously there are exceptions to every rule. i'm talking about the willfully ignorant and my comments were made in that context.

I agree with you re it not only being aspies. I just mentioned aspies cause lived with two exes with the condition, think my little one has traits n also think I have traits.

I was scammed of £60 once on holiday. They said put a £20 on top to make it higher. I took that litterally not thinking they ment gamble it n lost £60. I'd never felt so humiliated n low in my low in my life. I was with my first ex who had AS n we were both duped.
My family just laughed it put a complete downer on the holiday.

I'm sorry that you were scammed like that, SHM, that's dreadful :(

Come on, SHM, don't do this. You don't want to get temp banned again, do you.
You're welcome to E-mail/pm me if you vent, anything. It was me that mentioned AS as an example of why I disagreed with his post, not Alasdair.

Alasdair - I get what you are saying re taking responsibility n so on, however, if it weren't for people who do these tricks with the computers (scammers), then the scammee (is there a word?) wouldn't have to take responsibility for doing anything wrong/taking incorrect action so thus it is the responsibility of the scammer regardless of disability/ability etc.
