The 10 latest scams to avoid

Evey, Ali was only giving an opinion, you cant report someone over an opinion no matter how much you disagree with it.

Are you allowed to report posts from admin?

Of course you can. If any post by any member - whoever they are - infringes the BLUA it should be reported. I think in this particular instance it would be pointless as this thread has already been closed and subsequently re-opened which would suggest its various merits and issues have been considered prior to re-opening.

We really are stuck for entertainment around here, aren't we?

BL is not a democracy but I have been known to unilaterally decide to allow for democratic tendencies. There is scope for interesting debate - even useful info perhaps - with the topic so I don't see a problem with the thread as long as people use it as intended.

Protection of the vulnerable is what we need, not persecution!

I agree with this. There are a number of groups in society for whom scams like these really aren't as obvious as they may seem to more savvy folk. Especially with computer stuff which is a complete mystery to many even now. There's a pensioner I know who was been caught up in a number of these scams who will generally ask my opinion but it's only been his own belligerent incompetence that prevented him being nobbled by those Indian "Microsoft Technician" calls. I've heard him give out his card and PIN number over the phone to random callers and no amount of explanation of why he shouldn't be doing that and why no legit organisation would ever ask for that will get through to him. As far as he is concerned I'm just paranoid and they were obviously legit because they knew his name when they phoned. He's not actually stupid, he's just very trusting and can't wrap his head around why people would want to scam him. He can't quite understand that somebody could have enough personal details to appear to know something about him whilst not actually knowing anything about him and are just fishing (or indeed phishing) for banking info. He's just from a different time and assumes the best in people. It's a shame that being so good-natured leaves a person wide open to being taken advantage of in this way, I don't think it's fair to describe such people as 'stupid'. Naive perhaps, not stupid.

Re scams like I stated earlier in the thread I was scammed on holiday where I took something literal. I was with an ex who was Asperger's, but we both did not realise this at the time, anyway I think I have traits of it and I think my daughter may have, but am not sure of this as she's not yet five (humans only get a theory of mind when they reach four).

When I mentioned reporting admin, I just want to make it clear that was nothing personal against anyone. The only reason I asked was that it may prevent arguments on the forums - and some people may not know that it's allowed to report admin and so forth. So thought I'd ask. But thought I'd mention this as I don't want anyone thinking I've any personal issues towards anyone, as that's not the case at all.

To be fair, Alasdair did explain what he meant and I don't think he meant anything derogatory to anyone with any mental / learning disability issues. It was me who mentioned that just to clarify that some people who get scammed are often vulnerable people and not always simply "ignorant" as many people often assume them to be. Like I said in a post where I was scammed on holiday, my family laughed at me for it n I found that quite humiliating.

Raas - just saw this, please see my post above as to why I mentioned reporting admin. It was nothing against Alasdair at All. My suggestion was simply a way of trying to prevent arguments between certain parties that's all. Alasdair knows, well I hope so, that I have nothing against him. I PMd him enough after all that with Knock and have know qualms in admitting it.
But if reporting someone means that an issue can be dealt with by certain parties in E-mail/PM n hopefully resolved instead of igniting, then is it not a good/useful thing to do?

If I'm wrong I apologise.

But weren't you the one who raised the initial objection to alasdair's post, Evey? The objection which precipitated the (admittedly hilarious) derailment? :D

You forgot to put 'directionless clusterfuck' between 'interesting debate' and 'useful info'. ;)
