I’m going to be brief here. We had some discussion on this bill yesterday, but this bill will criminalize a plant, and in 1Timothy 4:4, God said there that all things that God created are good. I think what we should be doing here is punishing the wrongdoer, and if you use something, and neglect it, and do something wrong then we should punish them, but we should not be making a felony out of just possessing a plant.

And some people do use this plant as extract and things medicinally. The Harvard Medical School stated that salvia could reduce dependence upon stimulants. The National Institute of Mental Health’s Psychoactive Drug Screening Program said that salvia could be useful for a range of diseases including Alzheimer’s, depression, schizophrenia, chronic pain, or even AIDS or HIV. And there are some who douse this plant religiously, and though I differ with them, I believe it’s my duty to protect their right to worship as they please and according to their conscience, as long as they’re not harming someone else.

It’s been said that this drug causes lots of problems, it’s hallucinogenic. The effect is for about 10 minutes, and it’s akin to having a daydream. And I think we make a mistake in going ahead and making this a part of the Schedule III drugs that are prohibited when the FDA has not added it to the list.

So I urge you not to extend the war on drugs, which has been a real failure in many ways. Thank you for your consideration. I urge you to vote against the bill.

I love the mention about it being a plant. I don't care much for the bible but if people will listen to quotes out of it to aid in legalisation then fair play.

if the republicans were intellectually honest and consistent with their own stated position, they would own the drug criminalization debate.

Citing the Bible in order to make governmental policy is pretty ridiculous.
I am happy that it looks like it might work out for the "good guys" in this case, but what if he next says that slavery or stoning people to death should be legal, since they were in the Bible?
Then again, he acknowledges that the War on Drugs has been a failure, which is a really, really beautiful thing.
So, I have mixed feelings about this.

I will have to jump over and see who the politician was exactly but good on him for acknowledging the failed war on drugs.

Also, I wonder what his stance is on marijuana. It is also a plant that has medicinal uses. It is also frequently used (by some) to help withdrawals from other, more addictive, more "dangerous" drugs.

For real. I'm relatively conservative on most issues. Personal freedom being the biggest one. Which includes the freedom to choose your state of conciousness. Telling me I can't get high is just as bad as telling me I can't take a nap in my opinion.

^ I agree with you completely, but I see it as liberal, not conservative!

In the democrat/republican system of the US currently sure. But with what the ideas are supposed to represent, I'd say its more conservative. In general conservatives are supposed to support a smaller government, while liberals support more government involvement to solve problems. At least my personal understanding, there's about a thousand people with a thousand different ways to define liberal and conservative lol. And I'm not saying its strongly one way or the other, neither political position following their core beliefs seems as though they would be predisposed to drugs. I just see conservationism as the one who "should" be like "we don't need the government involvement" and the liberals as the ones more more likely to see some benifit from it.

As I said, these definitions of liberal and conservative aren't set in stone, and I fully acknowledge that neither democrat nor republican follow one nor the either particularly well. I wish the right wing would take this issue with their "free market" ideology they claim to love, and the left with its current better mindset on social issues (although I think the social issues have nothing to do with the core ideology of either system, just get latched onto different political parties)
