Will using the reagents on plastic surfaces (PET water bottle, or poly baggie?) affect the results of the test?

If they are clean then no - BUT please remember the reagents are ACID's and can eat their way through plastic. Its much better to do them on a solid non pourous surface like glass etc - if your out and about, get a coke can and turn it upside down - presto a small bowl to work on.
