International ring leader sought after record Ecstasy bust in U.S.
July 27, 2000

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Federal agents continued Thursday to hunt for the alleged leader of the international drug trafficking ring responsible for the largest shipment of Ecstasy ever intercepted in the United States.
Three men have been arrested in connection with the record haul of 2.1 million Ecstasy tablets, worth an estimated $40 million on the street. But Tamer Ibrahim, 26, of Los Angeles, the alleged ringleader, is still being sought.
Authorities said Wednesday they intercepted the shipment of the synthetic drug after it arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday on an Air France plane from Paris. The tablets were packed in 15 boxes labeled pencils.
Officials said the drug probably came from the Netherlands. (der! j.b.)
'Tentacles throughout the world'
U.S. Attorney Alejandro Mayorkas called the ring "a drug organization with tentacles throughout the world."
The same ring is thought to be behind imports of more than 1,000 pounds (2,200 kilos) of Ecstasy found in San Francisco, Germany, Italy and Los Angeles over the past seven months.
The investigation was sparked by the discovery in December last year of a shipment of about 100 pounds (220 kilos) of Ecstasy moving from a FedEx shipping facility in Memphis and addressed to a hair salon in Upland, California.
The drugs were delivered and four suspects arrested.
DEA agent Mark Trouville said the various hauls of Ecstasy signaled "a potentially explosive epidemic" in the United States.
Said to cause brain damage
Also known as MDMA and manufactured mostly in Europe, Ecstasy is popular at nightclubs and underground "rave" parties for the euphoria users say it provokes. The drug is said to cause brain damage and have other side effects.
"Ecstasy/MDMA causes long-lasting and perhaps permanent damage to the heart, the brain, the kidneys and the nervous system," said White House Drug Policy Director Barry McCaffrey.
"It is also associated with anxiety, panic attacks, depression and paranoia," he testified in Washington this week at a Senate hearing.
Seizures of Ecstasy in the United States have increased dramatically over the past year. The Customs Service said it had seized nearly 8 million tablets over the last 10 months compared to 3.5 million tablets in 1999.
"Though ecstasy is known sometimes on the street as the feel good drug," Mayorkas said, "users should beware of its great dangers and dealers should know that they are going to federal prison, which is not a feel-good place to be."

"umm...it's my birthday... can i have some munchies?"

"I'll teach them to fuck up my business. I'll give their plane a flat tyre with this handful of spikey nails and delay their takeoff while they get the spare out of the boot, thus disrupting their timetable and, and, hmmmm, back to the evil schemes drawing board methinks."
It's a conspiracy!

why label them as pencils? seems kinda strange... though I guess you wouldn't think to search pencils...
